Star Citizen Megathread - Star Marine isn't doomed after all!
Boy was that thing buggy. I got the ship stuck at 0 follow speed first try.
Only problem I had was missiles not hitting ever and I didn't think it was a bug so I just felt bad and thought I sucked at the game
So I've got a friend downloading the game for the free fly week, forgive me for not following the development closely but what are my options for jumping into the same game as him in each of the various modes? Is there a 'friends' system available yet?
edit: did some reading and there's a contacts menu apparently. Neat
Add each other to your contacts menu (it's been in-game for ages but hidden behind F11 and with a less-than-intuitive keybind to unlock the mouse for clicking on the friends-list UI, right-alt+spacebar), and then form a party either from the hangar or the universe menu.
If you're going into Arena Commander, instead of forming a party have one of you form a lobby and invite the other in, select your gamemode and ships and map, and off you go.
If you're going into ArcCorp or Port Olisar, form a party and have one person join the desired location. The matchmaker finds an instance with enough room for the whole party and throws the first person into it; it creates a slot reservation for every other member of the party that remains valid for two minutes. Once the first person is on the Mustang loading screen or into the desired location, everyone else in the party will have a new option in the instances list when they go to the hangar elevator/universe menu and try and select one of the locations: in addition to Quick Join there'll be their party's instance.
The universe/elevator menu will also show you instances people on your friends list are in, but it does not automatically create slot reservations for you so it's often less reliable to join because instances are often full.
The tutorial was great when it first came out (after the initial bugs got worked out, like dai not having to press spacebar every 6 seconds when a tutorial prompt just would not die), and then the game underwent tons of changes (including the entire merge of the Illfonic branch with the main CIG dev branch) and nobody's gone back and touched the tutorial. So... yeah, it's broken in all sorts of hilaribad ways.
Missiles were rebalanced/nerfed to shit^3 in a balance patch, with a reduction in tracking to undo the Missile Commander meta that was dominating PVP. Unintended side effect was missiles could not track the tutorial targets, making the stage impassible. That is one of the outstanding issues that makes the tutorial unfinishable right now.
On the topic of SQ42, we don't have a timeline or an estimate because CIG has learned that, if you make a public statement of an estimated release window for something, no matter how you cushion it as a tentative target and not a firm deadline, some people will treat it as a promise, and then if production efficiency requires rearranging things such that you end up missing that deadline because the thing you're working on is now lower priority (Star Marine is a perfect example, as referenced by dai), backers get really mad and rip your heads off in the forums and elsewhere. They don't make commitments unless they know they can meet them (which typically means deadlines are given only on short timescales, a couple days or at most weeks ahead) or when it's a fixed date because it's a con or there's a CIG-event venue booking and that shit is actually set in stone because contracts were signed 9-15 months in advance.
I might be a bit optimistic, but I think CIG would probably like to release or at least announce the so-close-we-can-name-a-date release of SQ42 at CitizenCon 2016, the fourth anniversary of the project's crowdfunding.

Left-Alt works for it too.
like dai not having to press spacebar every 6 seconds when a tutorial prompt just would not die
that happened once after my friend accidentally landed real hard and bounced off the landing pad, leaving the area while it was still showing the tutorial stuff. When it prompted for him to take off after that, he wasn't in the trigger area or whatever and it refused to figure out why. was a pretty easy logic error to have happen
on the plus side it let us fly through the 'dying star' planetoid and reach the other side of the asteroid belt, probably first time anybody managed to fly that far in beta
i did the thing

a lot brighter here
some people say that might be a stove and sink in the middle but I'm worried those yellow things are industrial space toilets
Im still keen to see how cargo is going to be handled, i'd asume in a modular sense due to how the cargo compartments of all ships are set up but it would be neat if it was actually something you had to load in either yourself or via an AI instead of it just appearing.
Also so keen for the cutlass rework, maybe then the lower airlock will actually work!

You will have to load the cargo on the ship, stack it efficiently and such, or get someone else to do it for you. That someone else could be another player or some NPC.
This applies to parts on your ship too, if you want to change a weapon out, you need to pull off the old one and put on the new one physically. Same goes for modules like coolers, reactors, scoops, etc.
They're creating what they call grabby hands for this, which is a tool that the player can use (their hands) to pick up small objects as well as larger ones.

i'm already onto ur tricks mr chairman director robots
also, huh, the price gap between the SF and the G shrunk by $5
so they said the door was already in there when they got the office?
then they probably replaced the doors with the rsi doors, which wouldnt be a expensive swap at all
I mean I'm honestly curious to some of the criticisms of star citizen/CIG but this is so inconsequential

When you buy an office it comes with no doors? Please Hezzy, don't leave this thread ever now, this is getting funny.

Christ almighty why do people care so fucking much I don't understand
Let the video game company make video games.
hey I'll bite! I work at an architecture firm and deal with reps for installations all the time, and goddamn that's some hefty ballparking. $4k to fit a ~$150-300 RFID reader into the wall and $17k for a 'basic door' (why did he decide to double the estimation???), but even at half that price it looks like a quote to manufacture and install a secure storefront built to order... yet he's still making guesses on the door being just a few slabs of drywall (which would be awful to suspend and constantly move around), and ignoring the fact there was apparently an existing door at the location they rigged up (still no idea who'd assume it's a garage door opener, unless that's referring to the card reader?).
So the dude's either a confused rep just giving the normal quote numbers for a fresh installation, or he gave a pretty extensive quote and the numbers are cherrypicked from the worst case values within the confines of the basic package. Looking at the rest of the company's work, they give quotes for custom work to fit existing plans and locations, and would have to go through quite the processes to get approval on structural and visual with building management (and the city council/aldermen if it's exterior), and then you have to get contractors involved to put it in place.
TL;DR it's not an expensive piece of hardware you buy off the shelf, costs inflate considerably when you have to get fabrication, structural engineers, contractors and town halls involved in submittal and construction
but hey you're just concerned people are gonna lose their money right? Everyone should just get a refund on the early pledges they agreed weren't investments or loans with monetary returns, this is what kickstarter and asking for public funding is all about. Boy, wouldn't that suck if sudden waves of money loss under the flag of "in good faith again eventually maybe" could somehow shake up budgeting and employment in a company built around that as an income source! They've just got that big pile of money sitting there doing nothing, right? Nobody's been spending it except for frivolous shit and it doesn't work as a cyclical flow of income that covers employment and major business costs. Color me embarrassed for not finding such a glaring hole in the budgetary dam

If you're an aspiring miner, Shubin Interstellar is for you. There's a chance to win an Orion by applying, allegedly
If I chop my standalone Cutlass Red in for a Prospector, do I gain the prospector package items (i.e model/poster etc) or do I just keep what comes with the cutlass, but just gain a different ship?
melt and buy, yes
CCU, no
Forgot I had my 15% discount code so I bought one outright :v:
The artwork totally bowled me over, looks like a gorgeous little mining vessel, am I reading right that mining will be more planetside based rather than "point at asteroid and wait"?
well, kind of
the Prospector is built for surface mining and the Orion is built for roid mining, though you'd probably be able to do roids with the Prospector/planets with the Orion (it'd be hilarious if someone just rammed theirs into a planet at 90* trying to mine it)
does the buyback token work on things you didn't actually 'buy'? like I gave my non-LTI package to someone on here and he sent me an LTI version.
if I melt that will I still be able to buy-back with store credit?

The Prospector's post details say the Orion is space-only. I'm sure someone will still try, hilariously.

If the LTIification marked it as Upgraded, probably no. If the package is straight-up an LTI package (e.g. he melted and re-bought and then regifted), should.
