alright, here's the sell it's a typical dungeoneering adventure, some dwarf lad comes to your party with offers of ~ g o l d ~ if you aid him travel to his original mountainhome, which he fled as a child by request of his father due to some unspeakable horror coming up from the depths. the dwarf tells the party that the mountainhome is reported to be abandoned/filled with goblins or some shit because all dwarven forts are, but when you arrive, the dwarf and the party are greeted by his father and throng, celebrations are had and the father explains that they destroyed the beast, but by the time the battle was done, the son had disappeared they give the party a place to stay, possibly some minor quests in the area (the blacksmith's ass is filled with demons or some shit) to keep them around, until ~weird happenings~ start to evidence that perhaps not all is right with the fort after all plot twists abound, visions of dwarves with bleeding eyes, nightmares, corridors that don't make sense, whispers and screams in the night from the walls, turns out that the fort fell to some horrifying monster that sealed the fort, tortured all the dwarves inside and turned them into meat puppets or something (maybe they're all just hallucinations), and now lures adventurers in through lures (like the son) party has to escape fort of fuck in a horror style tension game anyone got any thoughts on this, ideas for encounters, monsters, changes to the plot? was thinking of doing a poster/sound recording from the son as some sort of primer, and maybe putting some clues in there that shit wasn't right

(Is not fully aware of this.)

Spoiler: [sp]The boss is a flesh god that spawned humanity, and as such it can warp its servants into hideous entities. Most end game enemies initially shift between being humanoid and more montserous forms when attacking before ceasing to resemble humans at all at lower levels.[/sp] Anyway, ideas: - Take monsters that have varying body types like the Yuan-Ti Malison and the Sea Spawn and reflavour them as Dwarves. When the ruse is revealed the dwarves begin to mutate and shift into horrendous forms a la 'The Thing'. Consider also making them shapechangers, or having a few morph into Gibbering Mouthers. - Heavy use of Polymorph and Illusion magics to conceal their nature. Any inquisitive magic users may stumble upon this in their alchemy labs, but don't obviously reference what spells they are. Comment on how, for example, the Wizard finds a bunch of butterfly cacoons inside a satchel (these are components for Polymorph, ignore the beast only requirement and flavor it as the dwarves using it to make themselves look normal). - Make occasional references to how gluttonous, or disgustingly the dwarves eat and revel. Don't emphasise it as being too out of the ordinary. Just something to make them feel kind of uneasy. - A group of survivor dwarves, or better yet Dureagar are trapped somewhere in the mid to lower levels of the fort. Both parties might have to work together to survive, but some of them may actually be monsters. - If the monster can make illusions of creatures or its servants can shapeshift consider allowing the party to seperate, then between sessions (or during a break) talk to a player in private and explain that a duplicate has taken their place. Let the player play the duplicate in sercret and then explain that they should ambush the party to stop them from leaving. - Your players may want to fight whatevers in the lowest level of the fort. If this is the case consider grabbing any old high CR monster and flavor it as an aberration. The entity could also be something more abstract, like a monolith or some kind of portal.
Aside from two player characters needing to be built, I've got my Monsters and Other Childish Things campaign damn near ready to roll for the 6th. Every NPC for the prebuilt campaign has a character sheet, I have maps of both the town and the school ready to roll, and I've got both the initial plot hook and the very first supernatural adventure planned out and rearin' to go. Time to get making tokens for stuff.
I have a group of 6 level 5 players. I want to throw a Revenant at them but I want something to go with it, but I don't know what would be thematically appropriate. I was thinking just tacking on some ghouls/ghasts but I don't really know and I don't want to litter the battlefield with lots of enemies just to make the encounter "tougher". My players are high 99% of the time anyway so I'm not worried about making the encounters too easy, but I want them to at least be fun.
What are your guys' opinions on gritty, more realistic game systems? Not the crazy simulationist shit like Phoenix Command, but something like Blade of the Iron Throne, where there are more tactics involved and one lucky hit could end you. I recently got Blade of the Iron Throne and it looks pretty cool, but I don't have anyone to play it with :saddowns:
I love high impact, deadly systems. 40k is bae.
I've only ever GM'd Pathfinder, 5E, Rogue Trader, and Dark Heresy. I'm feeling sorta bored of Fantasy/Far Future settings at the moment and was wondering if anyone could recommend me some other settings they've enjoyed? I've been thinking something along the lines of Shadowrun, Eclipse Phase, or even World of Darkness or Delta Green. But I really don't know anything about any of these games and am kinda at a loss as to which would be the most "fun".

It's a high fantasy setting but it's got a hacking mechanic by way of magically encrypted crystals that store data like a modern USB stick or hard drive.

Very gritty games are definitely one of the harder styles of game to do right though, dying of a single random hit which you couldn't possibly have foreseen would be that lethal is pretty much anti-fun if you have any attachment to your characters.

The mechanics of almost all of the World of Darkness games are relatively simple, but it should be noted that it's not really one game. The Old World of Darkness is a pretty different beast in setting, tone and mechanics from the New World of Darkness and Chronicles of Darkness. CoD is the 2nd edition of NWoD (they had to rename the game because of legal finagles) but NWod and CoD are also pretty large departures from each other in mechanics, and there's some revisions to the settings as well but it's nothing close to the difference between Old and New World of Darkness. Should also be noted that while splats (The fanbase terminology for the different lines, eg Vampire: The Masquerade, Mage: The Awakening and so on are different splats) are technically compatible with others from the same version of WoD (Eg Chronicles of Darkness' versions of Vampire and Werewolf) are technically compatible with each other, they're generally intended to be played seperately and mixing them together can add a lot of complications. Especially with vampires because of the whole daylight thing. The general consensus, although of course like everything that boils down to taste and opinion, most people seem to think oWoD had the best setting while nWoD had superior and simplified mechanics. If you want to check out oWoD I'd recommend looking at the 20th anniversary editions. Shadowrun is pretty heavy on rules, especially as a GM where you have to keep track of the physical world, the matrix and the astral world. Deckers/Technomancers, Riggers and Mages also all use mechanics that are to varying degrees different from the standard combat mechanics, and especially in the case of Deckers and Technomancers that adds a lot of complexity. At least if you've never GMed or played Shadowrun before I'd recommend not letting any of the players play a Decker/Technomancer, and if you allow a rigger then I'd recommend either not allowing them to buy a Rigger Control Console at all, or only letting them slave one or two drones to it, because having a swarm of 10 individual drones flying about is a clusterfuck to GM and completely imbalanced besides. Similarly with Summoners, don't let them have more than one or maybe two spirits active at a time. Horror in Tabletop RPGs is pretty hard to pull off and a bit more niche than most other styles of play, so I'd probably hold off on that unless you know what you're doing or have some really good ideas you want to try out with it. Eclipse Phase can be pretty difficult to wrap your head around because of the whole mind uploading/downloading thing and having different bodies, both as a player and a GM. If I recall the mechanics for character creation are also a bit confusing at least in the core book, but there was a different system released in a supplement that was more accessible and the actual game systems are not as complicated as something like Shadowrun. I'd also recommend checking out Savage Worlds, Feng Shui and Deadlands, either Classic or Reloaded, Reloaded is simpler and uses more or less the same mechanics as Savage Worlds, Classic has a lot more charm and more interesting mechanics.
I love high impact, deadly systems. 40k is bae.
At this point I'm even becoming bothered by the 40k system having simple guns and knives be unable to kill in a single hit.
At this point I'm even becoming bothered by the 40k system having simple guns and knives be unable to kill in a single hit.
Remove skin armor and the system becomes a fair bit more lethal.
I really should get into playing tabletop again, I kinda miss nuffle screwing me over just enough to fail horribly, but never enough for my character to actually die.
I mean, all of those games could be described as fantasy or futuristic so it's kinda difficult to tell what it is you're looking for really
Sorry, I was mostly looking for a more contemporary setting, modern/near-future sorta stuff.
*big recommendation*
Hey, pretty much exactly what I was looking for, thanks a heap.
Could always try for a superhero setting (Mutants and Masterminds, Godlike, Valiant Universe, etc), or something like Monsters and Other Childish Things
I had read up on M&M recently, and forgot to mention that another game I was interested in was Exalted (which seems like a more high-level superhero game sorta.)
I love high impact, deadly systems. 40k is bae.
You should see the Warhammer Fantasy RPG
You should see Silcore.
What class do you guys think fits a dwarf best? I'm open for basically everything, except for a barbarian since we already have one of those in the group. As long as I get to pull of a half-assed dwarven accent I'm in
So I was having a discussion with my DM today about a theoretical build; what do y'all think about a lance throwing Eldrich Knight? The idea being that you have high strength and hurl your lance at enemies then use your bonus action to immediately teleport the lance back to you. I chose lance because I figured it's aerodynamically similar to a javelin and deals more damage.

problem a) you can't throw lances
problem a) you can't throw lances
not with that attitude you can't

My main issue is that you're only really using EK for the War Bond trait at 3 and not capitalizing on the spells much. Personally if I was building something like this I'd go three levels into EK and then build into Rogue. Take the spells you want and then use War Bond on two of your daggers. The daggers let you trigger sneak attack, deal 1d4 + dex/str, and can continually be thrown and retrieved via teleport like the lance. As a Rogue it also gives you the added benefit of always being armed in most circumstances.
I wonder if I went too far with my new character's design. Dude's a total blonde Aryan who would make panties drop with his mere presence but he's got the gaudiest sense of fashion. His armor is excessively gilded and he wears fucking gold grills of all things :v: It does fit his very materialistic and vainglorious personality, but it's hard to find a fitting picture that I could use as a token for him in Roll20
Don't know if any of these are what you're going for, but here's a few I found.
