Except for when it suddenly is.[/QUOTE] There's one I got called Cold Steel Wardens, which is for people playing characters more in line with The Punisher or the Watchmen, i.e. normal people with skill. There's also the HERO System, which has really crunchy character generation but lets you make literally whatever the hell you want in terms of character.

I've never played it, but it's more about young heroes growing into their powers from what I remember of the book, kind of like the Young Justice/Young Avengers lines. Wasn't very crunchy either, I don't think?
alright, last time I vomited an idea in here I got some good feedback (dwarf fort one from before) so i'm back with another idea basic sell: fantasy world, in the past Bad Lad wizard is killed, and when dying he curses the world with ~powerful magicks~: this magic takes the form of a curse that afflicts specifically newly finished paintings. After a certain amount of time passes, the paintings open up and vomit out some nightmarish monsters from the world within the painting the players are a group of adventurers recruited into an agency responsible for getting new works of art, opening portals into them (mario 64 style) and fixing the "corrupted" elements of the painting. So for instance, the players might go into a landscape painting of a small village near a stream, but when they go into the painting world, the stream has been blocked with detritus and some monster hunts the villagers. To fix the painting they have to slay the monster and unblock the stream to restore it. TL;DR adventurers in agency mario 64 their way into paintings to purge corruption/cthulhu style beasties and Save The World anyone got any comments, ideas for painting worlds - i was thinking of doing a painting as a oneshot

Agency, fictional worlds, monsters - just more specific in scope since its only paintings instead of all fiction.

Like artists that were in particularly bad frames of mind or were insane are more likely to have their paintings come to life. Then the party finds out there's one artist who's out there who's basically the craziest and evillest person ever and there's rumours that they're working on their ultimate masterpiece - if it's finished it'll spawn something that'll pose a threat to the entire world maybe

In each dungeon appears to be, if the PCs figure it out, a partial piece of a more grand painting. The villain is painting each of these murals separately, and then plans to connect all of them together in to a massive region-scale painting. The PCs would have to maybe triangulate where the "core" of it is and stop the villain there.

You could easily keep these as a recurring theme in your games or as a set series of one offs. I'd highly advise you to do some reading on art history because you'll be able to find some great inspiration. Here's some painting ideas: - An abstract painting of a landscape that has consistently strange logic (e.g water always flows up). The players need to use these odd rules to figure out a puzzle. Think something Dali-esc. - A damaged painting that has begun to degenerate, creating a disturbing nightmarescape that the players have to survive. Re-flavor zombies as being "shifting Elven nobles, with smudged blurred faces". - A massive renissance court scene involving some kind of farcical kangaroo court that the players must solve. - A self portrait where the players will have the dissect the personality quirks of the artist psychonaughts style. If you'd like these to be part of a consistent adventure consider maybe allowing players to research the painting, the artist, etc so they can better prepare for the encounters within.

Double Cross is more built for mutations, with overuse of powers turning PC's into monsters. Wild Talents is a One Roll Engine system, with powers being hyperstats (ie: Iron Man's inteligence or Superman's Strength), hyperskills (Batman's detective abilities or Deadpool's martial prowess), or miracles (Green Lantern's ring or Cyclops' eye lasers). Valiant Universe is an rpg set for playing in the Valiant Comics universe (duh), and I haven't looked too far into it despite owning a pdf copy. I haven't had a chance to play any of these, so I can't really give you an idea of how deadly any of them are (though I'm pretty sure Double Cross is supposed to have a lot of character switching from power over-use and potential deaths, 'cause its natively Japanese)

I couldn't find a halfling miniature that I liked, so I'm getting one printed by HeroForge for my halfling cleric. I really like the character I made for him and I will probably use him more in the future, which is why I am getting the figure printed and all that.
So I'm doing my first dnd 4e game and can't decide which race to go, they're pretty much all up for grabs, and I'm doing a bard. Any tips? Probably gonna go stabby for the weapon choice(Though the implications with pixie shrink and arrows still stuck in you when the magic ends is horrifying)
So I started up a campaign with the Fallout 2.0 rules and the Guns & Ammo homebrew our local M.Ciaster so lovingly crafted. Thanks to the kindly suggestion of Rats who lives in said desert, I decided to set the campaign in Arizona, which proved to be a highly effective staging ground for Fallout shenanigans. I decided to place the game post-New Vegas and canonically decide Caesar had died one way or another, so the Legion was a shattered mess at each other's throats. That's already a good hook for conflict, but when you factor in the possibility of the NCR and the original Brotherhood moving in to gain territory or mop up the region of Legion, and placing them beside the midwestern Brotherhood from Tactics (which I am both considering canonical for the game's purpose and bumping its timeline date up to be closer to my timeframe of 2283), you've got the staging area for one big-ass fucking war. So our 3-person party ranges from 17 to 25 in age, and we've got, from youngest to oldest: a mechanically-apt melee-centric girl who invented beatboxing after growing up hearing the percussion of gunshots fending off raiders, a hunter-sniper with a penchant for traps and outdoorsman skills, and a fresh-from-the-vault (literally by hours) greaser speaking in 50s lingo who honed his driving and shooting skills playing arcade games when one machine's fusion core malfunctioned, exploded, and irradiated him, turning him into a ghoul with a pompadour wig (he always had the wig, it didn't come with the mutation). 50's lingo is fuckin' /weird/, man. I plan to have my party travel to "shrines" to level up. Each shrine has an associated challenge, like underwater, on a stupidly high tower, guarded by neutral intelligent creatures, in a dead city, etc. so they have an idea of what they'll need to prepare for in order to get there. I'll probably end it with a final boss incorporating all of the challenges they faced. Anyone have any experience with leveling up like this? Or different kinds of leveling in general?

Finding some skilled weapon master, world famous explorer, mage, or archbishop can easily be an adventure unto itself.
Hm looking into it more, I think I'm stuck between half elf or eladrin skald, hard to decide between those, dilettante vs fey step.

It features a very well put together character creation system + tools and tips on how to construct a map for campaigns, based off his Twitch/Youtube custom DnD series. It's kind of like 5e simplified, made for one-shots and small campaigns. Had a lot of fun already making characters with other people.

I have a rather mindless boring job that just makes time go by sooooo slooooow. To combat this, however, I have been thinking up elaborate backstories that I'll probably never be able to tell for characters I won't be able to play for a while in my head to pass the time. I think then that I'm gonna write them down and share them and that'll be great, but then when I get home and I write them down I get a case of artist self-deprecation and I think the backstories are shit and I don't share them. Not that they actually will ever really see use in my current line of D&D games. The groups that I run with aren't too RP/Backstory heavy. Still like to write them, if only to pass the time when things are boring.

D&D characters don't have to be high art or ultra clever, just whatever you think would be fun or cool. A while back I posted a concept for a 'Drow disguised as a human cleric, trying to cement his friends legacy' character and I recently got a chance to play him, so you never know what old ideas you can later recycle!

Sorry for wording that badly. There's been a lot of build up though as me and the DM have been conniving together and established a 'cover' that my character is magically ill and is ashamed to take off his armor. The way he's built mechanically as well should avoid most of the disadvantages that Drow experience in sunlight by focusing on party buffs and save vs effect spells. I'll throw out some updates when we're a few sessions deep unless somebody immediately unhelms me session 1.

My chaotic good Warlock had a moral problem today where he had to kill a bunch of unarmed goblins cause they started attacking and blocking us when we were fighting some goblins who had weapons and shit (they let slip they have been raiding people recently and the Artificer of the group was like no we have to deal with them). I told him I'm not attacking the unarmed ones unless they become a problem cause It wouldn't be right. They became a problem so I had to deal with them and used burning and while at the same time feeling the most upset he could feel. What made things worst is when I had to kill the last one I rolled a Crit (Eldritch Blast) and completely destroyed them. After the session the DM said I almost had an alignment shift but since my character really didin't want to do it and had no choice otherwise he didn't. Man D&D is intense. Running a Good character with a class that uses not so good means to kill people is a challenge. I'm gonna have to figure out how I plan to roll him. His patron is fiend(if it wasn't obviously when I mentioned burning hands) so that is gonna be interesting as well to see how it effects things. I'm going Pact of the Chain as well (DM is letting me use a Faerie Dragon) so that's gonna be fun.
Sounds like you had an awesome game man. Some spells like Fear, Hypnotic Pattern, and Suggestion might be worth picking up after that incident because they provide you with less than lethal alternatives to dealing with stuff like that. They're a little less common on Warlocks who tend to be more blasty but they might be cool character spells if you feel like your character might want to take a less violent approach to certain situations.
