D&D V6 - Edition jokes don't really make sense anymore
To be fair, the nat-1 thing I can understand, because if you're rolling at all, there should be a chance of failure, otherwise it's just rolling dice for dice's sake (and conversely, if they'd only succeed on a nat 20, they shouldn't probably be rolling either)
I don't totally agree. Sometimes it's not a matter of failing or succeeding but how well you succeed.
I don't totally agree. Sometimes it's not a matter of failing or succeeding but how well you succeed.
Yeah, this makes sense if it's in the right context.
For instance if DnD5e had a barter skill I'd picture it something like this:
(Haggling for an item that costs 1g)
Roll Nat1 - "5g but if you do this little quest for me I'll see about lowering the price a little..."
Roll 5 - 3g
Roll 10 - 1g (it's base cost)
Roll 15 - half price
Roll Nat20 - "it's free, if you sort out this other problem for me..."
Which is a simple way I've been doing that doesn't throw up a brick wall every roll and could possibly enhance the story.
I don't totally agree. Sometimes it's not a matter of failing or succeeding but how well you succeed.
Success and failure are always relative, though. 'Failure' doesn't necessarily mean just straight no, but it does mean that there is a worst-possible outcome for this person making this roll and in that situation, and that's where the nat1 slots in nicely. Inversely with nat20, but positively.
Basically I think there should be a little something more for getting extremely lucky/unlucky, to differentiate from just being a normal number, because it helps keep rolling dice from becoming a slog and lets you throw in little surprises for skill checks, that sort of thing. It's not universally applicable, obviously, some scenarios (like combat) don't really need more incentive/punishment than critical hits and misses already provide, and more routine rolls like perception might not either, but for most things worth rolling I find the possibility of something not fully expected happening to be a nice little cherry on top, so to speak
I just do it like this:
Nat 1, I roll another secret d20 thats a scale on how bad of a crit miss it is. The lower the result the more severe it is.
Nat 20, allow the player to fluff what they're doing more than usual, and allow them to do certain things beyond that roll if they're creative enough. Is not a be all, do all result.
Hm, can't decide what to get for my 4E Drow Red Sands Executioners level 2 feat, it's between cunning stalker(CA against anyone I'm fighting against as long as I'm the only one adjacent to them), or ruthless hunter(hand crossbow goes from 1d6 to 1d8 and becomes a high crit weapon), or something else
Also our paladin rolled a 0 on sneak today, good thing he at least has +15 intimidate :v:
So I am completely new to dnd as a participant but I have watched alot of one shots/clips/ all of critical roll and I'm interested go at least play in one as a first time, where would I be able to find places online to do that? I see roll 20 and when I find one that works my time it's already got like 10 applicants it feels like I'm looking for a job interview
Roll20 is your best bet unless you can get a group together IRL. You can try playing in the Adventurer's League at your local game store, just to get a taste of the game. You're even more likely to get a game going if you're willing to host it yourself as the DM, which isn't a bad way to learn the game as you'll need to read the player's handbook front to cover. You can run the starter adventure which should save you a lot of work, but still give you an idea of what you generally need to do as DM.
So me and my group had a very silly session today, and me as GM was enabling it all. TL;DR resident catfolk maid of the player mansion did some serious pranks, got out of hand and then turned people into anime. A friend was listening on our stream and doodled some of the things that happen:
[T]https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/291369060006887429/336133935304146955/the_cat_burglar.PNG[/T] [T]https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/291369060006887429/336137585803919364/angry_mother_leads_daughter_to_spanking.png[/T] [T]https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/291369060006887429/336147607703519234/cats_should_not_play_with_magic.png[/T]
The catfolk had used the very special bow from the party's groundkeeper, a dragonborn ranger to make a raised bed. "Borrowing it", leaving it with it's string gone and several scratch marks on it. The poor dragonborn's reaction was this:

And sometime later, well. The session went out of control as the catfolk wanted to show the party a cool new spell she made:

The party's bird bard couldn't handle the magic and vomited up a rainbow feathered ball that flew away into the sky.

From all the very serious sessions we've had, me as the GM of Despair, this was a nice break.
Some images of the OP are gone sadly.

Replying to earlier discussion , I tend to ramp up the drama of a crit 1 or 20 based on what the person is trying to do. For example, for a really difficult task a 20 may not provide much more than a standard successful roll, but a 1 will be much worse. (The bigger they are the harder they fall so to speak.) The opposite is true for easier tasks. If they are just trying to sneak from door to door or jump over a table or something, then a 1 will not be anything major (probably just fall over or something) while a 20 could allow them to complete the rather simple action in a very effective way.
One example of the first option (hard task) from my campaign. There was an invasion happening on the city and the party was embroiled in a fight on a bridge with dozens of people on both side. They were stuck and wanted to get past, but it was a 70 ft drop at best. Several of the players decided to attempt a jump from the side of the bridge to a nearby pine tree and slide down. This was a very risky and difficult task... So when one of the players rolled a 1, welp... Something major had to happen. He tripped on the wall of the bridge while jumping and fell headfirst to the ground below. His back was broken and he was paralyzed from the waist down. The healer in the group stabilized him and mended some of his broken bones but wasn't skilled enough to deal with the paralysis. Cue this guy having to crawl around for 2 sessions before they were able to escape to battle and find a better healer.
I find tis way works really well because the players are very tense and excited when they are doing something where success is critical. The group reaction to the guy rolling a 1 on his bridge jump was hilarious and became a story from then on, which is what we play for.
All this being said, I try to avoid killing players or npcs because of crit rolls unless the player is doing something very stupid where they deserve to die essentially (ie. Running into a group of 40 kobolds and then crit failing a bluff or diplomacy or w.e)
Sorry for posting art so much, but one of my players literally drew this title piece for my birthday for our campaign.

We also have had some really funny doodles these last sessions I can take the time to post as well:

The artist who drew that contributed to the creativity as well, he's also the one who drew everything in my other art dump post, the one with the anime hairs. I want to plug him because he's such a nice guy that has such a good creative mind. https://twitter.com/maddy_engels

He drew this parody pic of my shadowrun party as well! Now he's in it as a fellow player because I've tried for a long while but only now has his schedule allowed it.
I'm looking for players for a game of Werewolf the Forsaken. Currently have 3 people, aiming for 4-5.
Looking like it's gonna be set in modern-day Portland, Oregon, with the main characters knowing each other prior to forming a pack because they attend/work at the same university.
Yiffing is ban, no awoo, $250 fine :vs:
PM me on here if you're interested.
[editline]16th July 2017[/editline]
Saturdays, starting at noon GMT-7, probably going until 3 or 4 PM.
I love the group I play with, but it'd be nice to have a group that's a little more...engaged? My group now is definitely into it, but having a group that doesn't pass out on me after 2-3 hours of playing would be nice.

I know that feeling all too well. I'm so happy that I've found the group I have now. Sure it's not IRL, but I love them all very much. It was rough for me, in the early stages of me GMing it was IRL, and all my players would play stuff like Not Tetris 2 and Binding of Isaac while in the session which really hurt my confidence as a GM, and made me forced to be very assertive and borderline railroading cuz the group either didn't do anything at all (by that I don't mean not doing the prepared stuff I've done, I mean nothing at all) or was very timid as players. It was so conflicting though because they usually got really hyped up when good moments happend and I know they like pen and paper games, yet this disinterest was very hard to deal with. I'm a bit sensitive it nowadays, but my current group is so good to me, I'm being spoiled.
My advice: Keep trucking, and if you think it stacks up to be a problem; talk to them about it and ask what they think. My DnD campaign sessions average around 3 hours, but that's over the internet and is done every sunday. If I were to play IRL, I would want a lot longer than just 3 hours.
Our female fighter made the male bard sterile after she rolled a 1 on her attack against the enemy in front of her and her weapon went swinging back into the testes of the bard behind her.

Might as well count that as having killed the Bard.

Yeah, critical fails should be funny in a "oh look you did something a little foolish" sort of way, not "you've ruined this guys life, ha ha"
But if I recall correctly 'Hey I'm Grump' has the meanest, nastiest GM ever. So that's to be expected.

My personal opinion, a good DM will take his players seriously enough that an application to a group (for an online campaign) should feel a little like a job interview. Being a new player, they should be lenient, but they should definitely make sure you both understand what kind of game you'd be going into/want.

This game wasn't with the Retired Navy Vet, this was my dad's game (Still not 100% DM of the year, last game he just took away all of our magical items for no real reason). The vet's Saturday game had to be cancelled due to a dispute between him and the guy whose house we were playing at. The guy (Let's call him James) was sort of sick of the Vet always arriving late due to work, so he gave him an ultimatum of either get work schedule in order or call off the game. The vet chose to call off the game. Later, James realized that he went a little far and tried to mend the bond by shooting the vet some texts asking to talk about it. The navy vet didn't want to fix the relationship (He ranted to me about it, something something issues from the navy), and he actually dropped out of my dad's Saturday game because James was in it. In my opinion they're both sort of at fault, but at least James tried to make things right.
Funny thing was that the navy vet on like the Saturday James sent him the ultimatum he got Saturdays off. As a result he created a new Saturday game, that I think I've mentioned before, that got canned after a single game because of the Vet's work schedule.
Sorry, but everything you just told me about that story painted the Vet as a total asshole.
Why are you splitting the blame between the Vet and James? Blame the Vet, hes a manipulative asshole.
Sorry, but everything you just told me about that story painted the Vet as a total asshole.

Yeah, the blame can probably be split more 90% towards the vet and 10% towards James or so. James did not talk to the Vet beforehand about even having an issue with him being late, which is what caused the Vet to spiral into his dickitude. The vet is paying for it more in the long run. He really liked both the game my dad is running and that he was running, and because he can't even exist in the same room as James, he's gone and fucked himself out of D&D.
EDIT: I mean there is no trying to wrap words around to put him in a good light. The Retired Navy Vet is, indeed, a huge dick. I guess the reason I still play with him every now and then is because:
A. He's actually started respecting me and doesn't make any insults towards my characters anymore and
B. I sorta have pity on his soul. While he may boast about his exploits, I doubt he has many real friends anymore [sp]hur hur wonder why?[/sp] so I might as well give him at least a tinge of kindness.
Also I don't think I'll play a D&D game run by him anymore unless he gets a new job. He works at like some call-center place and constantly works overtime to make money for the preparation of the apocalypse [sp]Only half joking... I think...[/sp]
I genned a random world on DonJon originally for inspiration but the names and titles of locations prompted me to keep it as the setting. Here are some favorites:
The Desert of Desolation
The Plain of Skulls
The Tower of Shattered Souls
The Cathedral of Chains
The Forsaken Labyrinth of Madness
It also includes the Citadel of the Lich Queen, the Tower of the Demon Princess, and finally the Dread Labyrinth of the Gargoyle-Empress. Some very powerful and influential ladies run this continent.
