I turned my Mimic's into horrifying lovecraftian esque mindfucks.
Player's tried looting a chest in a tomb and suddenly all the statues whipped out technicals and their bodies ripped open to show huge maws, then they'd wrap around the players and try dragging them in (as explanation for them having the ability to grapple), while screaming the entire time.
There's lots of shit like that. Ropers, Piercers, Lurkers, all sorts of GOTCHA monsters are truly horrifying. The classic Gelatinous cube, even, is near invisible until you likely walked halfway into it! Ropers turn from a large rock formation into a horrifying worm-like maw with stony tendrils flailing around to rip you to shreds, piercers drop from the ceiling to root in your guts, lurkers are the damn FLOOR until they pierce your feet with paralytic spines then wrap you up to devour you.
D&D has some fucked up monsters, mimics are the lest of them! Mimics are smart enough to actually make friends with, those others are just hungry and alien.

Noticed this from Best of the Worst, and first thing to come to my mind is when GM tells you that door is a mimic that attacks you.
ROLL INITIATIVE
Ready for D&D night!

had the first player kill in the game i'm DMing,
They choose the more dangerous / quicker path up this 700ft cliff, think the stairs in the 3rd lotr film,
but part way up part of them were destroyed by some kind of explosion, instead of the safe option of climb back down and take the longer but safer route
they decided to keep going, eventually they reach the blast site, the barbarian made a way across using a javalin and some rope, and got across fine
the paladin on the other hand, made it part way across, fell 300ft and landed with a thud at the bottom
cleric followed nearly falling but managed to get across
Players found two low level NPCs, a priest and a rogue.
They asked them to accompany the party in a fight
Against some green dragon wyrmlings
They snuck up through some trees, everyone doing fine, the priest went next to the rogue for comfort
The druid said "I'll sneak up to them, keep them safe"
Failed her sneak and the dragons saw them, initiative and the fight begins
They where killed instantly. By two angry green dragons
Party picks on druid because she got them both killed
Good times.
It's always the fuckin' druids fault.
Fuck druids :v:

Was there a reason he fell off other than a failed climb check? I know it might have been a silly plan deserving of the consequences but it's still kind of a shitty way to die.

Playing my first 5e game later this month with some college buddies.
Going to playing a monk since that was my first 3.5 class years ago.
I think my favorite 5e class is Bard. It wasn't my first class, nor have I spent a lot of time playing them, I just like them. I like how they can fit in a lot of different roles depending on their college and spells, how they're pretty versatile with their skills, and I like charisma.
Current character concept running through my head is a Mohawk toting vibrant gnome in the College of Glamour. Biggest problem I'm running into is a sort of lack of info on the feywilds and what living there would be like. I mean I get bits and pieces, but I can't find any of the proper info I want.

Well it wasnt just one failed check to be honest
He failed his climb check resulting in the fall
Failed another check to try and grab hold again
And the cleric failed their check to try and grab him
Spent a few minutes of trying to figure out any other way of saving them but,
They had another character, a fighter, ready incase they died earlier in the game (only 3rd level at this point)
Which didnt take to long for them to get back in the story
Given that the remaining 2 character ended up at a guard station near some massive sea gates, and they are now one of the guards that was stationed there

When my players fall, I never let them see the *thud* of their characters
Let's me use them later if need be.
You could have a little necromancer living down on the floor studying all the bodies that fell over the years :v:
I hate getting rid of characters.
One of our players was switching characters yesterday. We're playing Star Wars EotE, and 2 players are brand new. One of them made a droid, and didn't really realize that they needed to be highly customized in one direction in order to work. In the end he made a character that wasn't really that good at anything.
So he makes a new one, a Gand Melee tank, it's good we have a ranged tank and now we have 2 fighty people. But we need to get rid of the droid who didn't die in the combat. So while shopping the rest of the party decides to trade him for a coat. He wanted a glorious end for his droid, and fought this decision, only to be immediately restrained and given away.
I have now had three players fucking over players. A player deciding to join another player in a fight to the death tournament last second, accidentally decapitating a friend with a TIE fighter, and selling another player in exchange for a coat.
Was it a wookiee fur coat at least

Have it show back up some time in the future, dressed to the nines and decked out with new snazzy modifications, and have it go HK-47 on the seller

no it was a cool trenchcoat with smuggling pockets.
How do you deal with players who talk about off topic stuff while the DM is talking?
How do you deal with players who talk about off topic stuff while the DM is talking?
i would just mention it after the game that it's kind of rude to talk about other stuff when the dm is talking, and that you'd appreciate it if they refrained from such
if they get offended by that, i don't think you should bother playing with them anymore. those kinds of people just make more problems down the line
As someone who has DMed with a person who does this semi-regularly, I let them finish what they're saying if it's a brief thing, but if it's not important and they don't stop, I straight up interrupt them and remind them that we're currently in D&D time. We all have mostly conflicting schedules so it's hard to actually get a session going in the first place, and we've agreed to make the most of the time we do have so nobody has raised any issues over this approach.
Depends on the situation. If I feel it's out of hand I might ask it to stop, but unless the game is at some super serious or critical juncture I usually just let it pass
Meming in character though, that's the death penalty

We had a guy in Star Wars last year that would quote the darth plagueis speech so often that we invoked a rule in which when he mentions it in character the dark side caused his strain threshold to lower. It stabilized at 4. he was then stabbed to death by another player in the tournament mentioned a few post ago. It was for the best really.
How do you deal with players who talk about off topic stuff while the DM is talking?
Our DM would just start dishing out points of damage if we started to go too off topic or started fucking with the tone of the game. It was agree'd at the start of the game and I thought it worked quite well.
He was a pretty chill guy so you could still have a convo but he had a good sense about when was a good time to get back onto it and if you kept going, you'd start losing HP
Has anyone else here ever been blueballed by a Deck of Illusions? Our DM randomly generated it last night, and we all thought he had given us the Deck of Many Things.
Once again I miss another session due to 3 hours of sleep because of work...
It's just not worth the hour drive + 4 hours of playing + the hour drive back

You should just be glad he didn't, honestly.
I put together a Weenie Hut Jr.'s version of the Deck of Many Things for our campaign, its basically a half as good, half as bad varient that doesnt COMPLETELY derail the game, tho admittedly I'm still tweaking it. I can share if peeps are interested.

Please do. Sounds like something my party would like.

Go big or go home, get that baby stuff outta here!
Update on the Drow Cleric: Slowly he's begun to actually bond with the party, growing softer and softer despite himself. One evening after a particularly difficult trial the party sat down for dinner. The Cleric excused himself citing that he was feeling 'ill' and would retire early. After returning to his room he stripped down to his common clothes and shifted into the Astral Plane using his Robe of Stars and returned to the dinner. He sat with them, eating undisguised and without armor but still hidden.
Also this session was recorded. My DM wants me to clean up a conversation we had in-character so he can post it online. If I can steal a copy of the audio I might post it here if you're all interested.
