Personally I like the dated aesthetic. It's got a kind of charm to it.
No way, that's the definitive guide to dealing with minmaxing fuck nuggets
the book itself isn't terrible, it's usually some standard gm advice, but pondsmith is near gygax tier sadistic
I'm too used to flash storage and wifi, some of the stuff in CP2020 feels like tying a sharp rock onto a stick to hit things with

The genre predates Wifi, Flash Storage, world wide web, etc.
Because there are people who can't handle scifi that can't keep up with the times, mostly It's just so difficult to accept that we might be using VHS tapes while we blast aliens in the scifi future and I'm aware that argument is shit, but the impression I get from a lot of talk about CP2020 is generally that if you're down with the aesthetic everything else doesn't matter so much, and if you're not then you're not, and there's not much to be done in that respect Personally I'm all down for it, but I'm also the damned fool who keeps wanting to try to run a game in the Aliens universe so I'm in the first camp kind of by default
The aesthetic is pretty cool but the mechanics are fucking awful imo. Shadowrun's mechanics are significantly better and they're not exactly great either. I'd take it any day of the week and only partially because of the wizards.
I don't really see it. It's kinda got all the stuff that normally ends up broken in Fusion-lite systems (mainly by making Reflex and Body the only important combat stats), but that's totally workable by not letting parties get by with only combat. Which is hardly unique advice in any game The only real problem unique to CP2020 on the balance front is that FBC's are so far beyond other characters in power that they might as well (and should be) only used in groups that are all FBC's too, which isn't even that big of a deal since FBC's are endgame-exclusive anyway I guess if you don't like lethal combat or d10 systems (which I can kind of get, dice always seem janky when there are only 10 possible results) then yea, it's not stunning, but it works for what it needs to do And more importantly, the rules it does go deep into serve the tone just fine. It's old fashioned but this isn't exactly a hobby where that's 100% a bad thing

The D10 system in that game is just absolutely awful, imo. And as far lethal combat, well... it's more specifically how it's lethal to yourself. Like every single time you attack you have a 3% chance to hit yourself or another party member, and a 3% chance to either drop your weapon, jam it, or accidentally discharge it. That's bad with normal weapons, if you're using really bigass guns or god forbid, explosives, you're going to end up killing yourself or a party member real fast like. Fairly sure I've complained about this before, though.
That's kinda why I'm leaning towards Cyberpunk as opposed to Shadowrun, I don't like the whole magic mixing with cyberpunk angle they go with.
And that's fine. I mean personally I like the magic, but I totally get that some people wouldn't. It's just too bad that the core system isn't very good.
This actually reminds me that I should probably dump Hexographer and swap it with that. Half of the reason why my setting work is on hiatus is because I absolutely hate that outdated, Java-based turtle crawl of a trainwreck.
I just started using hexographer cause I needed a map, then came to realize I would need pro versions and other things to really utilize everything. Now I'm not sure what to do once I have to eventually expand the map beyond the little kingdom I made and have something for the world. I've heard inkarnate is good and I believe you can set a hex grid on it which should help? Anyone have recommendations or ideas here? It'd be appreciated.
That's kinda why I'm leaning towards Cyberpunk as opposed to Shadowrun, I don't like the whole magic mixing with cyberpunk angle they go with.
You could always gut the magic out of the game. Then the only problem is whether or not you want Technomancers or Foundation shit, which are both technically sci-fi, but to a magical degree. [sp]You could probably get away with just gutting all of metahumanity except for base humans and all the magical shit, plus Technomancers and the Foundation, to get a pure cyberpunk game.[/sp]
I'm really not sure why you'd want to run shadowrun without magic really it's a huge part of the setting, and if you're not playing shadowrun for that I'm not entirely sure why you are
because shadowrun is one of two systems that do cyberpunk
I like Shadowrun for magic/techno combo, it let's you finally kill those high level mages with appropriate amount of muggle firepower to the face. On the other hand, Cyberpunk is great because it is the pure and original take on Cyberpunk as a genre, wherein everything else feels more of a derivative.
do you think every fantasy game is a derivative of D&D and every FPS is a derivative of Doom too?
We call them Wolfenstein clones, thank you very much. [editline]21st September 2016[/editline] But I'm using derivative (incorrectly) not as direct descendant but as something that was highly influenced that also has it's own take on it that gives it uniqueness.
Exactly, cyberpunk's jank makes it fucking great Also those huge detailed gear listings, seriously no other game comes close
Two new friends asked me to DM a campaign for them. "Sure when?" "Tomorrow sound good?" Oh geez allnighter planning session my fav!
CP wouldn't be the same without Friday Night Firefight facing a dude in a t-shirt and jeans with a 7.62 is a boss battle
My racist DM has realized the errors of his ways after reading up on them, and is allowing me to change my race to a gnome, the original thing I wanted. I pretty much just switched out my race from a gnome to a halfling when he originally said i couldn't for what amounted to "just cause". Now that he's actually read about them, he is letting me be one cause he understands them better.
He is lost. Yet another falls to the wiles of the pedo-child-race.
What gnome murdered your parents? Or were you scared of the lawn gnome as a child and it left a psychological scar?
What gnome murdered your parents? Or were you scared of the lawn gnome as a child and it left a psychological scar?
no i just hate children also the mental image of this entire race of beings that look like children even when theyre adults and... mating.
no i just hate children also the mental image of this entire race of beings that look like children even when theyre adults and... mating.
Rather fuck a gnome than one of those uppity knife ears. Damn tree huggers.
no i just hate children also the mental image of this entire race of beings that look like children even when theyre adults and... mating.
Tiny races are scum and should be universally banned/butchered. No kobolds, no halflings, no gnomes, none of that! Wipe them out, let no seed of mercy take root for that is the seed of your DOWNFALL! Dwarves are still cool tho.

I told a guy I work with at work that I'd run a D&D campaign with him and his friends. It's been a week and I haven't written anything down. I have some experience being a DM, but none about world building or anything like that. They want to play a group of Blood Hunters who go around and do "monster of the day" stuff, so it doesn't have to be incredibly complex.
Absolutely haram
Fucking elf fucker. I bet you even spare trees!
