So I am going to start running a DnD 5e game starting this Thursday, the only issue is that I just found out I am going to be the DM :v: It's a lot of people's first or second time, so I don't wanna go too overboard with it. I have a few ideas in mind, but I'd like to hear suggestions first for general campaign ideas.
What setting?
At least in RT I can faithfully say that the good luck was entirely due to Rearadmiral absorbing all the negative luck from the rest of the party
I can't count the number of times where the words 'Don't worry, I can take this' were said right before the enemy rolled max damage in that game
This is my curse.
Meanwhile in Black Crusade, a single arbite takes down a chaos space marine veteran of the long war on his own while dodging 12 bolter shots point blank. He wasn't even the leader he was just a random goon
.... what weapon was he using?
What setting?
I was just gonna keep it to something I am familiar with, Forgotten Realms. If you have any suggestions, shoot them at me.

Leader A has launched a massive crusade on a neighbouring kingdom. Leader A claims that Leader B is working with / is a (*insert evil*) to justify his attacks. (The real reason is much sinister)
Demons have set up a honest to goodness town, with inn blacksmith, farm and church. (All that good stuff) in a far away part of the world away from public eye and was protected by magical means but now fanatics been harassing them non stop. The town gathers up all the money they can and pay the party to convince them politely to leave them alone
Every day the tide rises just a little bit higher. Get ye boats ready.
The Dwarves have dug deep and struck the mantle releasing thousands of elementals who kindly tell the Dwarves to fuck off.
Any suggestions for epic fantasy that isn't dnd? I've looked at exalted but out of my group at least one person doesn't like playing super powerful archetypes as he finds them boring and I'd like to find something everyone can get into. The other three and myself are fine with pretty much anything.
Had a great moment during last weeks DnD session. It's probably standard fare for people but because I'm new to this it felt great.
In a bandit hideout with me, paladin and rogue friend. Paladin has the idea to take the clothes of previous fallen bandits in an attempt to disguise himself. Noticed there were bandits protecting a couple of cells with hostages. Paladin walks in saying "Shift's over boys" in an attempt to clear them out. Bandits see through his disguise immediately and begin to go for him. Paladin casually walks out the room and closes the door behind him. I have the idea to kick the door open in order to surprise them. I roll.
Critical roll.
Door flies off its hinges and hits one of the bandits. I roll for damage.
Critical roll.
The door hit the bandit with such force that it blasted him towards the back wall, killing him instantly. Many laughs ensued.

That second one sounds absurd and I love it. Thanks for the suggestions!

You can't really have Epic Fantasy without super powerful archetypes.
I mean, there's Godbound, but you're still pretty powerful, and demigods.
Unless you just mean "high fantasy" by a different name, in which case here's a list of fuckton from wikipedia.
I was going to Oslo this weekend, and so was the guy playing our dragonborn monk, so I caught a ride with him.
During the two hour drive I found out that one of the main reasons he doesn't often go to Oslo is "all of the pakis everywhere"(Don't know if the english word does the racial slur justice, but suffice to say it's a really really bad racial slur here) And that he would have voted for Brexit if he could
And now I have that wonderful bit of personal information to dwell on when I play DnD with him once every week

No you're right, paki is a derogatory term here too.
And hey, at least now if you include some racial bigotry in your campaign that guy can just blend right in!

I guess by epic fantasy I just meant something with grand adventures as opposed to an actual setting type called "epic fantasy". High fantasy or low fantasy is fine. Really I'd prefer suggestions as opposed to trying to sift through a huge list since I'd rather not pick a setting that sounds cool only to find it's rules a clusterfuck.

7th Sea might fit what you're looking for, then. The Second Edition just came out, not long ago, too.
Alternatively, Anima for Exalted without the god-touched aspect(more or less), or Earthdawn for pre-historic fantasy Shadowrun.
Right, I'll look into those. Thanks.
Just completed my first session tonight (7 Hours) and overall I had a very strong, positive player reaction! Here's a compiled list of what I noticed and felt worked well or didn't work well.
- I improved many of the DCs and set them at 15, perhaps for some which should have been easier or harder.
+ Players loved the battlemaps. Most of the others are planning on going out and getting 1 inch graph paper for their own games.
+ Misdirection worked well. Not explaining what they were fighting in detail or saying the exact DC scale had a positive reaction. Two of my players shit themselves when I described 'Color Spray' as a flash of putrid colors and asked for 'all the d10s' they had.
+ The Spider Camp encounter I mentioned earlier in the thread went off perfectly. They had no use for the item, but the player who encountered it cited it as his favorite moment of the session.
-/+ Roleplay was sporadic and one speech got interrupted by an angry cat attacking the battlemaps, however each player expressed their character well. More over I would give brief descriptions of whatever idle action they declared doing. Meditation, prayer, or sleep was occasionally accompanied by a reflection on some backstory detail they'd given me. I was hesitant to roleplay minor aspects of what the character was doing, but they all seemed to enjoy the extended description of their action. Especially if it affected the overall atmosphere of the scene.
Overall good session. This thread was a huge help for feedback and I am much appreciative! Thank you so much guys!

we are all happy to help
What did that player get from the spider? I'll admit i found that whole idea very interesting and will use it in my campaign.

I created four items, based on your recommendation for item tiers.
- A spider silk covered breastplate that reduced slashing damage by 2 (but not less than 1). Non-Magical. The players got this but refused to use it because of character reasons or proficiency reasons.
- An obsidian Drider necklace that allowed the user to Speak with Animals once per day (on only Spiders). Neutral or Evil aligned characters could use it as a Spellcasting Focus and would gain +1 to initiative.
- A spider silk pouch of Giant Spider Poison (2d6 I think?). Varying uses based on melee or projectiles.
- A spider silk rope that would give advantage on athletics checks pertaining to climbing. DC20 strength save to break out of.
There was also a disgusting whip made of spider silk and bone but I cut it because it was busted.

Power maul. They rolled a 21 and 22 for damage which just barely knocked me into critical and then got stunned for 5 turns and by that time everyone else was knocked down too. In the end everyone got cuffed and the session ended there
Eclipse Phase looks like an awesome setting. It's basically hard-scifi Call of Cthulu.
Their references and inspirations are some of my favourite authors.
You can also be an octopus wielding 6 machine pistols that fire flechettes.
I'm coming up with ideas for a game of Halo: Mythic, but I'm finding it hard to come up with ideas for the gameplay. Its hard for me to excuse ground combat anywhere that isn't Reach, the Battle of Harvest, or the Battle of Earth, because otherwise the Covenant has no reason to even land and fight, they'd just glass the planets from orbit.
Anyone got any ideas?
There are plenty of examples in the lore of them having ground battles because of some odd Forerunner piece of tech or hint thereof they were looking for
Or as a way to circumvent serious orbital defenses, again like they did on reach or earth to get around the super-MACs
Failing that, naval boarding actions are always a possibility
Really, just check out any of the books before they introduced the Spartan III's and retconned how Reach went down, there's a ton of examples of worlds or places with direct ground combat

Alright, thanks, I'll take a look at some of the books. Probably'll go with the forerunner artifacts.

Eclipse Phase is an awesome game with a really cool setting. Plus, you can get all the PDFs for free from the creator's site 100% legally, making it perfectly fine to try before you buy.
Rolled a critical at work today. As in I had to pack a set of standard D&D dice and the d20 landed on a 20 when I shook the case.
2 hits on 27 dice(post edged), my spirit is fucking useless at shooting.

At least you can edge, if a drone fucks up you just have to deal with it.
Drones aren't huge pains in the ass about other things, though
And controlling a whole pile of them is easy
Besides, drones inability to aim can be compensated for with autoshotguns
Spirits and drones are quality and quantity. Spirits are much more powerful than drones but having more than one or two of them active is very difficult. Drones aren't as great and made of paper mache but you can easily have a dozen of them.

At least drones don't have a chance to knock you out/outright kill you when you get one :v:
