first combat on a new character, we're fighting drow in a cave
I rush a guy with my bard to try and distract one before he assassin's creed jumps on our rogue, and try and knock him off his ledge to the ground
I not only fail to do so, but he tries to do the exact same thing, succeeds, and then as soon as I roll into the landing I get shot in the back with an arrow and knocked unconscious despite my racial poison resistance advantage
AND THEN USED AS A SPRINGBOARD BY OUR VERY ROGUE
I am modestly salty
You were nice and springy and gave me the needed leverage to get to where I needed to go though
If you actively seek out your family, sure. Otherwise I don't really see it coming up tbh, even if you look kind of similar that doesn't really mean anything, lots of people have lookalikes.
And if you were very young when you were taken it matters even less. You might barely even remember your family, if at all.
Wouldn't YOU try to find your way home after being stuck in the closest thing to hell for years? The PCs don't know about Fetches right after landing Ironside, they don't know they've changed until they look in a mirror, and even so, it's your family. They love you, and all that.

Not if I was like 5 last time I saw them, and 25 now.

A confused 5 year old WOULDN'T run home to mummy after a strange horrible experience? What kind of fucked up childhood did you have?

Uhh, I mean someone who WAS 5 when they were taken, and have grown up, and are 25 now.
Point being that if you've been away for so long you barely even remember your family, then probably not.

Arccadia is not the best place to develop emotional and mental maturity, being 25 in body doesn't mean being 25 in mind. You may barely remember your family, but that's pretty much all you have to go on and those memories are what guided you back Ironside from The Hedge. Where else could you think to go?

Just away.

"you decide to go north. eventually it ends up very cold and there's this happy guy with a red hat offering you a Sega Genesis"
Like, seriously, that's no good at all to anyone and ignoring the most probable way to act.

The most probable way to act for a 25 year old who has not seen their family since they were 5 is not to go crying to their family, though.
Also, who would ever accept that? Everyone knows the Genesis sucks, Nintendo for life.
Are we talking about Changeling again? You're gonna act erratically since you're very lost and probably have PTSD like every other Changeling PC
Are we talking about Changeling again? You're gonna act erratically since you're very lost and probably have PTSD like every other Changeling PC
its less acting erratically and more acting on something you don't really remember
Think about how Robin Williams acted at the start of Jumanji minus the comedy.

Frankly, I simply disagree. I don't mean to say they'll be running exactly like they got a grazed knee, like Nerts said they'd be all out of whack, but they should fixate on what little they do know and remember.
And now I know what to get elowin for Christmas. Nothing, because he doesn't appreciate gifts at all. Maybe because he had a horrible childhood with bad Christmas experiences. You would definitely be in the Court of Autumn.

Or maybe Fred Savage in Flight of the Navigator, though he was more lucid than a Changeling.

I wouldn't be in any court because splats are for some reason incompatible, and I'm obviously already a mage.
Still, last time I met my father was over a decade ago and I barely remember and don't care at all about him anymore. If I was only 5 last time I saw him, even more so.
Most people remember very little from that early in childhood except for things they've been retold later in their lives.
because splats are for some reason incompatible
Because otherwise everyone would just play vampire-werewolf-mages and be the best at everything ever forever.
I think the point you're missing here is that one does not mature simply by aging. If you took a 5 year old away from their parents, mutated them into an incredibly strong or incredibly attractive, or a dog or an embodiment of an element (or just kept around to do menial jobs at your boss Fae's wim), you're not going to be particularly smart or brave or mature, unless the Fae bothered to teach you anything.
Remember that a Changeling's will to leave Arcadia is a memory, and probably a powerful one at that if it's going to lead you to try and leave your all-powerful slave driver. If you're particularly young, what are the odds that it would be anything other than family or home?

Maturing and aging aren't the same thing, 20 years down the line you aren't going to remember that shit whether you're a well adjusted adult or not.
You're also not going to be a mental 5 year old, for that matter. I'm not really sure what you'd be at that point, probably a lot more fae than most changelings are since you grew up with the whole shindig.

So really, at 5 you're not getting out of Acadia. Your example is moo.

Uhh, there's tons of reasons you might escape. I mean just for starters there's the changelings who were just freed by their Fae. And some might end up in a group of changelings planning to escape. Some might seek to escape not because they're trying to get home, but because they just want to get away. If they've been trying to escape all their life then they might keep doing it through sheer stubbornness without even remembering why they wanted to go back in the first place. I can think of loads of reasons.
And beyond that, they might have been orphans before they were taken, or their families might have died after they were taken, any number of circumstances can negate this whole thing.
also youre a moo

A Changeling just looking to get away would likely get lost in The Hedge without making it Ironside. I'm not sure the Gentry would ever just let a changeling go free, even if they were somehow completely boring. They'd likely end up a tree or a face on a stone wall or furniture. Maybe if they just wanted to see what would happen but that's a very rare case. If they escaped with others, then they might stick with said buddies but this wouldn't be everyone. Ophans do have families, of a sort, even without blood relations. You heartless monster. And if their family has died since, they wouldn't know until they tried looking.
I don't understand why you lament how Changeling keeps the fantastic away from the normies when you're doing everything to read the game in a way that does so.

Orphans MIGHT have families even without blood relations. There's no guarantee there.
And the gentry letting you go free is an example straight from the book, there's dozens of reasons why they might do it besides just for shiggles. And sometimes they might just do it for the shiggles.
And this isn't really what I mean by keeping the fantastic away from normies, but anyhow it's generally in your best interest not to show people that you're a hideous mutated freak monster. And you have to go really far out of your way even if you want to, since it burns ALL your glamour.

'Not acting in your best interests' is, like, a key sign of mental illness, which as a Changeling is your bread and butter almost as much as Malks.

Who said you have to completely drop the Mask? You might not even know about it at the time. The player character hasn't read the book, you know.
More like World of Dorkness

In other news, I'm working on a Gears of War hack for Dark Heresy 2nd. I've posted it on r/rpg and r/gearsofwar and so far the response has been good. Figured I might as well post it here to maximize feedback.

So yesterday in Shadowrun
We got hired to prevent someone from winning a street race, and in turn proceeded to kick ass and win by miles almost without even trying
Easiest 200 grand we ever made

rigging is cheating
In today's bout of 5e, the 3 level 1s of us got surprised by 4 giant badgers. We died after the first badger crit and downed someone, following by the second badger also critting and outright killing someone.
The DM decided a mulligan was in order so we redid the encounter with a badger less. We got one down with sleep. We died again.
At this point, the DM softly giggled to himself and fiat'd our way out of it. Although I'm missing a thumb, someone else is missing a pinky finger and a third person is now missing a toe on each foot. Had to appease the badgers somehow, you see.
