Oh shit, that reminds me, (I don't know if I've already recounted this tale) the other day I went on a server that was military themed, like the clan or whatever who ran it was "7th Cavalry Gaming" or something. They had some nice plugins, like an enabled killfeed and info on who killed you, from what distance, and how much health they had.
They also had the most asinine rules I think I've ever run into. Everything had to be tactical - the rules even said things like "all mic usage must be tactical", "all talk must be tactical", "all movement must be tactical" - which I suppose encourages people to not express verbal diarrhea over the microphone and focus on teamwork, although I have no fucking idea what "non-tactical movement" is supposed to be. Worst and most bafflingly though, is their "no swearing" rule, which I wouldn't be as annoyed about were it not for the fact that the characters in-game swear like mad anyway.
You may only swear tactically
Why is this game popular? I played it and was sorely unimpressed.
Played it for the first time yesterday.
I found the fog of war to bring a whole new layer to the combat, that combined with the player (and other) characters shouting in panic when under heavy fire really help the immersion and intensity of the game.
Yesterday was the first time I flinched while spectating another player after a brief moment of silence got interuppted by 3 bullets whizzing past him smashing in to the wall next to him.
Bring in some realism ARMA style, onto a control scheme which is almost as smooth as Counter-Strike,
and I really understand how people like this game.
I'm definately up for playing more, is there a FP steam group for this?

NVM yes there is.

If you needed a proper answer to that, don't go in a thread and say that you weren't unimpressed by the game. Tell us more details on why, and we'll answer you why we like the game. Simple!

It's usually a good idea to take a step back and let one of your squad mates take point once in a while.
There are quite a lot of corners to cover at all times, try to cover the sides your team is not covering.
Either looking at the left when he's looking right, or the rear when your squad is looking forward;
It should not only prolong your life-span, but that of your teammates too!
Joined the group, looking forward to playing the game sometime with you people. I don't have a whole lot of experience playing this version of Insurgency, but I used to play the mod quite a bit back when it was a thing. It was cool to see the maps that I remembered playing on in the old version updated in this one.
So far I've only played co-op, managed to beat 2 of the maps so far with a squad of 3 and 2. Pretty fun, really intense at times. The bots are frickin' cheaters, but that makes it so much more satisfying to win.
Just got this game; used to play the fuck out of the original INS mod back in 2007, stoked to get back in. Any pointers for a new Jihadi Joe before I jump in?
Go singlefire all the time, even in CQC, since it saves ammo and allows you better controlled shots. It is not necessary to replace all your victims organs with lead.

Automatic is better, imo. You can easily single-fire without changing fire rates, and it allows you to mag dump if you get caught off guard. Plus, on most weapons you have so much ammo you're probably never going to use it all before you die anyway unless you're in a reserved role.
I've had more success with repetition over automatic fire. I've won firefights at all sorts of ranges against people bullet spamming by making placed shots, even without aiming down irons.
AHOY! After getting this game when it first came from the humble bundle I have forever been fighting a major FPS issue as in 9fps in some area's with everything on low and major source tweaks.
I have found out way back when I downloaded a USB Display driver to make a usb display device work... Well... By removing said driver I cap out at 200fps on everything on high.
Its like night and day difference. I can acculy shoot things now!
after a while you realize that when you sight up, you can fire with pinpoint accuracy at close range even while the animation plays
You can get away with firing in semi auto at close range but sometimes you need to get that extra shot off and bump firing takes way longer than firing in an automatic burst. I always shoot automatic unless I know for sure my gun will always one hit kill (like the AKM) regardless of where I hit the person. 9 times out of 10 I'll also prefire my target before they even get a chance to let a single shot off, so hurling four or five bullets in to them before they even get a chance to acquire a target is fine by me
I've been playing as John Rambo recently (first match was just two days ago) and feel like I've had some great success. The second match I played was skirmish and market, and I racked up 60 kills (to 15 deaths) by defending B alone. What has made it entertaining is that it started out as a joke-hipfiring LMGs constantly-but actually ended up being effective as hell.
I played a game today and there was a guy called Potts there, and while I don't use VOIP (although I should) he still made a successful attempt at directing me and a few others during a few rounds of push on some different maps. The first time he tried directing me was after I somehow managed to kill 6 insurgents on a push point while spraying my LMG constantly. It got a few laughs, and I ended up being the team room clearer to great success. I did some team damage to somebody on my team (by that I mean he got caught between two insurgents and an LMG) and he tried to votekick me, but Potts and another guy kept telling people not to vote as I was doing gods work and all I needed was instructions.
The veterans within the community seem really nice. I'm surprised at how close they are to the ARMAI/II veterans I used to play with.
My brother in arms screenshot this as it got a chuckle out of the insurgents as well as scurity.

By saving ammo I especially meant the time until you have to reload. If a kill takes 1-3 shots you have to reload less frequently than in autofire. Of course it doesn't always work optimal and sometimes you end up firing more bullets, especially when a lot of dust throws up, but in the end I found myself reload way less, than when I used to mainly use autofire.
The problem about autofire is its recoil. It is possible to fire controlled bursts, but already on medium distances there is a decent chance that probably only one bullet will hit. If you instead fired a single shot and after half a second another, you already have two safe hits. If you happen to be confronted on close range you basicly do the same, but you deliver shots more rapidly. It is not only something about firerate, but the ability to make each shot deliberately gives you a bit more focus and time to briefly think and adapt between shots, while in autofire your entire burst depends on how well you aimed on the first shot.

Accuracy is the primary reason I keep single-fire on, pretty much. I'm a more consistent shot with single-fire than full auto.
It really bugs me when people try to sit in the back of the map with a scoped FAL or M14 and they can't hit anything because their guns are set to full auto.

people who try to snipe are generally a bunch of shits that don't provide any useful help to the team. They kill maybe 1-2 people per round and don't go after the objectives unless literally everyone else is dead, in which case they die in 30 seconds because they can't figure out how to not snipe.
This game really doesn't like me
I used to get DC'd on my old rig unless I rejoined the same server, now I'm having completely random lag spikes
;_;

The SAW is amazing, 250 rounds, full auto, and really really controllable recoil. Also the suppression so if the first 5 don't hit, then the next 15 will.
the only downside to the m249 is the inaccuracy it has for even close range targets. sometimes you'll be spot on, and other times you'll just outline the enemy 5m close.
Playing brutal is brutal.
I have finally beaten all the maps on brutal. (except survival and hunt)
I also enjoy being the last man alive, getting into a tight situation and running and gunning for it. The AI just cant hit you worth shit if your within 3ft from them or traveling horizontally to them. Makes for some nice funnies at the end of the round. "HOW DID YOUR SURVIVE THAT!?!"
And I hate how they go prone when you shoot at them and shoot you threw a corner without any part of their body sticking out.
bots randomly crouching as soon as you start shooting kills me about a third of the times i die.

Which is weird because it's pretty easy to get quite a few kills with a sniper on most maps. If I get the role, even though I try not to, I can usually lock down an entire section of the map.

four snipers per team is ridiculous
ONE sniper is more than enough

SKS outclasses all of the long range rifles because of the recoil control
the M14's recoil isn't really as bad as it seems. the animation seems over the top but it's pretty controllable. Coupled with itty bitty sights though it's hard to use without an optic of any kind. Most snipers can be used effectively but too many people are under the impression that sitting back in the spawn area is going to turn you in to an effective player
four snipers on a team?
reminds me of a TF2 game I once played back when MvM first came out-- we couldn't figure out how to beat a wave (we were on expert), so we all went engineer and made a wall of sentries.
beat the rest of the map like that, dont doubt class-stacking in games, it might just work sometimes

maybe on sinjar if you're good at pot shotting security players as they leave their spawn
snipers can be used effectively in this game. but they're not. they just aren't. too many dumb "lone wolf" types try to utilize them and all they do is waste resources since they have no idea what they're doing

play on a modded difficulty server
you will never run and gun again

People who take bolt actions are funny
And sad
I hate using the M14, it's far too unreliable for my tastes. I don't like using the Mosin as insurgent either, but the green bolt-action sniper that Security uses suits me just fine. Reloading is a pain in the ass sometimes though.
Really though, I'm half inclined to agree completely and half inclined to say fuck no; there are times where, as sniper, I find myself having to do the goddamn objective because the rest of my team are morons and I run in with a pistol and get killed, and at that point I'd rather just have a FAL or something. Some situations in some maps, you don't even need a sniper.
On the other hand, sniping can be immensely useful, and piddling the class away as a CQ fighter is kind of a dick move unless you kill every single guy you lay eyes on and don't die.
would/does the military really use that sniper rifle without detachable magazines? I mean loading new rounds through the open chamber
