Game Dev Tycoon - It's like Game Dev Story, but for Windows, Mac, and Linux

I'm not sure why people are so defensive about whether or not Game Dev Tycoon and Game Dev Story are really similar to each other. I'm sure if you asked the devs they'd confirm that the two are really similar and that the base gameplay for both are virtually the same, save for a few different gameplay mechanics. Just because a game is really, REALLY similar to another game doesn't mean its a bad game.

We're defensive because these reviewers don't seem to get that part

That was more directed at the people adopting the GOD THEY'RE NOT SIMILAR AT ALL YOU'D HAVE TO BE SOME KIND OF IDIOT TO THINK SO stance.
Maybe I'm exagerrating a little but that's the vibe I'm getting from parts of this thread.
It seems most reviewers missed this tidbit:
... Not surprisingly, some players pointed out the similarities to Game Dev Story, which is another game development simulation game on the iPhone/Android and which served as the initial inspiration to Game Dev Tycoon. Most of these comments were praise saying that they really enjoyed our take on the genre but some called our game a rip-off. We respectfully disagree with the term. We have been open about our inspiration (see previous link to an interview) and said all along that our game was inspired by Game Dev Story but our entire game is our own creation – from how games are developed, to how you progress and how you make a hit game. We have created the concepts and game mechanics for Game Dev Tycoon as well as the game itself from scratch. ...
whoops
The game is not a rip off, but can however feel like a copy.
When I have what seemed to be a great game, a masterpiece of it's kind, once the reviews came in I saw all three 10's. Then once the last review came in I met the truly evil reviewer known as All Games that gave Vault 2050 a 9...
Fuck all games.
I always get bankrupt at the second office stage. My games just never become hits, my workers level up and drain all of my money

Save scumming is your friend
I agree with so much of what he said...
I hope it gets fixed to accommodate that.

There should be a button you can press. If not, hit the left arrow key.

I keep losing around the release of the PS2. Any tips for making my games have not-shit reviews? Everything is getting around 4.

Switch it up and make a new engine if you can.

Pretty much this. Try to add as much features as possible (without going bankrupt of course) and don't delay the development just because of a feature. I made that mistake several times before realizing that my "super-duper-engine" won't help me if I don't get it to use.

rip ea james
I want to make some movie about a really corporate boss of a company at some point, and the boss's name should be E.A. James.
New blog post from the devs. Topics of discussion are Steam Greenlight, balancing the game, and the future of Game Dev Tycoon.

Fuck, I love this game, but I keep failing at it. The furthest I ever got was the introduction of the N64 equivalent.
My games seem to always get low review scores, and it's frustrating because I actually do spend a lot of time thinking about how to balance the games many factors.

The thing is that you should aim for a specific balance between tech and design bubbles. "The more - the better" is not true. Yeah, you need to get as many bubbles as you can, but only in the needed proportion. Each genre has it's own proportion. You can find it by experimenting, just don't forget to caulculate tech/design and write it down once it is succesful, so you know what to aim for.
You can also look up all the needed values on the internet.
A handy tip for you: multi-genre games have a different balance needed, and Action-RPG is not the same as RPG-Action.

I got three 10's for this.

This is a big reason for me why I like Game Dev Tycoon more than Game Dev Story. GDS runs by itself after a while but in GDT I had a hard time trying to find the right values.
Is it just me or is this game much harder than the Kairosoft version?
Not quite alive, but sure as hell ain't dead!
Guess what guys!

- A longer story line, extending the playtime and adding new story elements as well as new platforms.
- New artwork (by our original talented artists).
- Ability to unlock multi-platform games.
- Rebalanced topics and platforms to make choices more interesting and results more understandable.
- Rebalanced review system to address sudden spikes in difficulty.
- New game mechanics (Post-release game reports and company expertise) to provide more feedback to the player.
- Small but often requested changes such as support for longer game names and ability to edit game name before release.
- And much more: A full change log is available (click blog link)
Surprised to see multi-plat games as an option since they seemed so against it on their forums. Glad to see it added though.
Can't wait for it to release onto Steam.
Pre-Purchased on steam, I'm excited for this game!
