Game Dev Tycoon - It's like Game Dev Story, but for Windows, Mac, and Linux

Just got an email saying my steam code was ready, hooray.
Think I might have another go at this game now seeing as there's updated shit.
To those who got it through the Windows 8 App Store:
For customers who bought on the Windows Store we will publish an update that will enable players to claim a key from within the game. The ETA for this update is the 29th but since Microsoft has the last say of when the update will go live this could vary.
I bought this a week ago on steam and tomorrow is it's release.
Is this game as fun as from the things I heard?

Yeah it's alright
Going bankrupt makes you restart the entire game?
Blegh, that's a bit of a turn-off. Did a 2 hour session and that stopped me from playing completely.

It should make you load your most recent save IIRC, or at least the first save in whatever office you're in
so if you're in the 3rd office and go bankrupt, it loads your company just the way it was when you moved to the 3rd office.
The update for the W8 version is live. If you haven't, update your game, then generate your key to play on Steam!
I bought this on Steam yesterday. I'm having a lot of fun with it so far.

Counter-Strife and BUGGY PILE OF SHIT coming to stores near you.
Hah, I love the new story elements, specifically [sp]the patent trolls.[/sp]
Is it just me, or is this update making the game easier?
I know the new Game Report feature has been helping out, but I feel like before I had the statistics saved, I was still scoring higher than I had in previous versions.

Also, is it just me, or when you get prompted for interviews, does the interviewer mispell your studio name? My studio name is SWK Studios, and it's always formatted there as SW KGmaes. Such a weird thing to have happen.
Oh god...
Finally, after all these years.

And I was just waiting and thinking
"So, which one of you will be that asshole this time...Hmm?"
I even made it just for the sake of it...
Wanted to ditch my current engine (Pandora) in order to create new one with upgraded graphics engine...
It was just supposed to be last game on this engine, I didn't even bother much with the sliders...
I spent 30 million dollars on a triple-A game.
It took two years to develop.
I spent millions of dollars on research.
I had over 850 hype.

It's just like real-life! Except the reviews aren't paid for.

I hyped it. The end result.

Oh jeez :(

Finally got a 10/10 game and finished Game Dev Tycoon with about 600M in cash.
Last game was Calla Dooty 4 again.
It failed.
Again.
A modding API is now in Beta.
I'm happy to announce that modding support is available. Obviously no actual mods are available yet but if you are interested in adding stuff to Game Dev Tycoon then now is the time!
How can I get the mod-enabled version?
You will have to have the Steam version of the game (until the beta is over).
Use the Steam beta feature.
Right-click on Game Dev Tycoon.
Click on Properties.
Go to the beta tab.
Select the beta version from the drop-down list. (If you don't see a beta version, try re-starting the steam client or log out from the client and log in again.)
Wait, until Steam updates the game. Once the update is complete, you can start the game (it should just work like usually).
Great, I have the beta but there are no mods!
Indeed, that's were you come in. If you want to create a mod, head over to the official Game Dev Tycoon Modding API250 github project which is, in fact, a mod itself.
You see, since we developed a game about developing games, we thought it would be fitting that we develop a mod that enables developing mods in the game about developing games...
What language can I write mods in?
Just as the game itself, mods are created using JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
What can mods do?
The current API methods enable modders to easily add topics, add consoles and add complex story events but your mod is not limited to that. With a bit of JavaScript knowledge you can do much more. If you feel like helping other modders you can even extend the API itself249. We fully intend to accept pull-requests and enhance the API together with the community.
When will we enable mods for the default version / outside steam?
As soon as we are happy with the stability of the beta.
And when will we get Steam Workshop support?
That will depend on how much interest we see in modding. If there is a lot of interest we will consider Workshop support.
oh sweet, this may bring some life into this game again, awesome
A bit of a bump here, but looks like modding just got a ton easier.

Introducing The Ultimate Suite
Today, we are not just celebrating a whole lot of awesome mods but it is also my pleasure to introduce the Ultimate Suite, a mod editor and mod library created by our veteran modders Francesco Abbattista (aka @alphabit) and Chad Keating (aka @SirEverard).
Ultimate Mod Editor
The Ultimate Suite includes the Ultimate Mod Editor or UME for short. With the UME anyone can produce Game Dev Tycoon mods by using a simple wizard mod creation tool. No coding experience or JavaScript knowledge required!

UME not only allows you to add custom topics, platforms, engine items and events but also allows you to add your own achievements and lab researches.
How cool is that? Answer: Substantially!

There's also a nice list of the better mods on that page, as well as some promising upcoming ones (the multiplayer one sounds interesting).
[editline]2nd March 2014[/editline]
Also, Steam Workshop support has been confirmed as in development. No date yet, but look forward to that sometime in the future.
Every week we receive questions about if and when Game Dev Tycoon will be coming to mobiles and, today, we are happy to announce that a completely revised version of Game Dev Tycoon is in the works! Developed under the guidance of the best mobile-game design gurus, this will bring an entirely new and FREE experience to the mobile market!
PS: We also plan to set up a trademark holding trolling company to trademark words like “coin” or “gem”. Inspired by events in Game Dev Tycoon we thought we’d call our new outfit ‘All Your IP Belongs To US’.

More at the link. The second bit is obviously an April fools prank, though I'm hoping the mobile announcement is legit.
This just happened:
[t]http://cloud-3.steampowered.com/ugc/774932114951570692/715FD96024BFB3D3E0B7EB4F6194799FA55BF28F/[/t]
And that happened when I was still in the garage.
Why are there so many people that pirate? It ruins me! I had like 5m and then people suddenly started pirating everything I made, even if I got really good ratings (that I usually get). Not fair.
[editline]28th April 2013[/editline]
Is there any way to keep it from not happening? Changing platform won't help.
(User was banned for this post ("Pirate. :-(" - daijitsu))
Quite a bump, but this post was just used in VG Facts' video about piracy. :v:

One of my favorite posts.
Holy necro-bump!
Though it was mentioned as a joke in a previous April fools post years ago, Game Dev Tycoon is seriously now released on iOS and [url="
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greenheartgames.gdt"]Android platforms!
It's the full game, ad free, for $5, or about half the price of the PC version on Steam, which is pretty sweet. It's got a redesigned UI that makes it more touch friendly, some new topics, a new pirate gamemode (not entirely sure what that is yet, but they claim it makes the game harder and is inspired by real events [thanks Kannata]), and an updated story mode. If you're on Steam, those new features will eventually get patched in for free too!
Also, for those who haven't been following via their newsletter, the dev team has also blogged about their experience porting the game to mobile platforms and how that trip has gone. It's a pretty interested read if you're even slightly interested in game development.
