Your barracks doesn't need a doorway. Just have the entire thing flush with the corridor. Any agents come in and they're suddenly in the middle of all your minions, especially at night.
Also whats the "maid exploit"?

Base entrances. Still a work in progress.

Bunch of lockers. Agents like to check them out, maybe there is evil stuff in them?

Armoury. Although the security system doesn't do that good of a job with weaken tags. It never sends social minions after them. Only alerts them when it's capture or kill.

Training and minion junk. The training might change. The minion stuff might too but it works well for now.

Library, power, infirmary, and dead nig- I mean freezer.

Control room. Will look cooler when I have more stuff to put in it.

The best for last. The control room will have that big monitor in it. Separate meeting room for those evil meetings. All the gold is there because who doesn't like looking at gold. The minions cannot get to the gold, but they can use the brief cases. The door to the outside is also guarded. (Although only by Lord Kane or whatever, sometimes a bored guard sits there for a few minutes)

Before you capture the maid the forces of justice do not send agents to you, nor do agents of justice appear on the world dom screen. Meaning you can steal as much as you want with little consequence. Just remove them all, wait a little while for all the heat to go down, and then capture the maid after you made a few million.
I only ever have like 2-3 holding cells, also the training room is usually the largest room
because when you have you pop at 500 it can get pretty crowded.
I place 2x2 armouries adjacent to my hallways, door in the tile near the hallways and two pistol storage racks in the other 2 squares.
Saves my construction minions from disappearing into one room when I hit yellow alert.
I might as well post my current base, and ask my fellow Geniuses if I'm doing anything wrong.

SO, am I doing anything wrong? I have all but 11 people and Lord Kane out collecting money thanks to the maid exploit.
Most of your rooms have lots of wasted space.
You don't need that many holding cells, 4 should be the absolute max.
Build another briefcase rack and honestly, your vault is huge. Even if you halved it you could fit a cool 10mil in it which would last all of island 1 without ever needing to steal from the world map again.

I just leave yellow alert on all the time.
Also on a related note, you can disable the alarm sound by clicking the alarm button again for those that don't know.

Don't do this; there's a bug where if you load a save where your Evil Genius is within the AOI of a big screen, they'll lose 20HP. You could accidentally game over yourself on a save one day, and there's no way to fix it then.
Sometimes I turn off Yellow Alert then all the agents with guns just fuck up everything, welp back to yellow.
I've found the alerts to be more trouble than they're worth. Except for a few specific sections of the game, I largely go without ever changing the alert at all.
I'm really getting close to giving up, because all the fun for me is getting sucked out by getting frustrated at design ideas because I don't have everything to work with (and I don't want to cheat to get those items), and coming in here, all I've found out was that Hotels are broken as fuck, and there is basically no way to manage the agents coming on the island, and the tourists.
I need a guide on smart base design.
[editline]2nd June 2014[/editline]
Yeah I give up, I'm uninstalling the game and playing something else until I feel less butt frustrated.
Christ almighty I love the game, but it's making me want to tear my hair out.
So I tried that briefcase rack in the door thing that was posted here. Worked incredibly well. Eventually I thought damn I made my vault a little too big, lets demolish it and make a more space efficient vault. Move briefcase rack into a top shack. Had 1.5m, which total takes up 4 spaces. Place the rack against the wall of the shack near the front leaving 4x4 spaces in the back for my gold. Demolish room. Gold takes up the spaces in front of the rack first, rack now permanently inaccessible. Game over :v:
Burglars kept somehow getting to my vault because I built it bad and couldn't make a door, so I built a gas chamber trap with pressure pads where a door would be and literally every burgler gets caught by it and agents try to examine the body bags and end up getting killed too, Two birds with one stone!
BEHOLD: The agents wrost nightmare!
Its a room with wind traps on either side and the floor between them line with sensor pads.
Once the agents step on a sensor, they get thrown one way and then back the other when the trip another sensor.
This trap set up is capable of killing huge amounts of enemy agents.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/v2b4YXg.jpg[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/XcvUfAp.jpg[/t]
Back and forth the agents go,
when will it stop no one knows......

Until they get pissed and fight the sensor pad which blows up, setting the lot of them on fire thanks to everything on the island being made out of explosives.

Let them come, they will just have to suffer my wrath in the wind room like all the agents before them.

Set it to level 4 to make it slightly harder for enemies to break into it. No minions will actually go guard that door, so you don't have to worry about misusing minions.

Very inefficient use of space. All that empty area in the middle? Get rid of it. Minions clip through each other so make sure the max empty corridor areas are only 1 or 2 squares wide.
Each locker adds an additional +1 max minion, so add more lockers.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/8qZD6z4.jpg[/t]

Multiple exits makes defending harder. Not recommended for someone new at the game, but not technically a bad thing.

That strongroom will never be even half full unless you cheat.
Freezer has inefficient usage of space too. See this shit image to see an example of better use of space (brown thing is an area that doesn't even require mining out with the better layout, thus saving money and mountain space)

Improve your usage of space, you have the same "Newbies' The Sims Syndrome", where you make massive rooms that are all empty.
I made a small image album with my layout, it is much different to what I'm used to doing and to be honest it is also probably the weirdest. Since I've cheated with increased minion cap and money cheats (I hate slow starts), you won't see a similar base in a while but it should give you a semi-good idea of what to plan your base to be like.

Wait, how do have over 100 minions? I've got my pop edited to 500 but it's capped at 100 and I don't know why. I've forgotten some of the quirks of the first island...

How many beds do you need? I always create an equal amount of beds as lockers. 1 bed per 5 minions?

Ugh okay then. But don't forget to make it longer and put some gas chambers in there so they lose intellect and stop shooting your pads

Each entry in the population.ini has two values, x and then y. X is the notoriety required to have Y minion cap.

i got this same problem, gog version.
[editline]2nd June 2014[/editline]
actually my problem is that it doesnt seem to have any effect at all that i changed it.
[editline]2nd June 2014[/editline]
actually that was just because of the tutorial bit.
Each entry in the population.ini has two values, x and then y. X is the notoriety required to have Y minion cap.
Yeah, I know that. I have mine set to 0,500. I only have 2 entries in the file, the first max population entry and the entry directly after it.

I just copied what you had posted on page 1. I think I racked up some notoriety which increased the cap.
How many beds do you need? I always create an equal amount of beds as lockers. 1 bed per 5 minions?
That sounds like a good ratio. If my barracks get filled with tired, idle minions I just send Shen there and stab one of the poor saps. That makes everyone else get max stats, so it saves floorspace and money since you need less beds.
I just copied what you had posted on page 1. I think I racked up some notoriety which increased the cap.
I've got like 130 notoriety and a million lockers.
[editline]2nd June 2014[/editline]
Oh for fucks sake, I forgot this game looks in every folder in its directories, even user created ones, and the damn game was reading my backed up population files.
So yeah, don't backup files to the Evil Genius directory, put them somewhere else.
Even with that extra pop, I can only have 99 construction workers since the thing doesn't go past it.
Even with that extra pop, I can only have 99 construction workers since the thing doesn't go past it.
Do you really need more than 99 construction workers though? :v:
20 really should be enough, you could make do with even less than that. I don't get the appeal of having more than about 150 minions. Everything looks super cluttered and with 150 you should have more than enough room to have a comfortable number of each minion type.

Use this to plan your base ahead of time.
Island 1: http://www.evilbastard.org/slight/egplanner1.php
Island 2: http://www.evilbastard.org/slight/egplanner.php
Think I'm gonna do a self-challenge run for EG.
Hard mode, max pop 500 but no minion cap gain from notoriety. Should be fun finding space to cram lockers into :v:
I need some advice from owners of this game.
I'm considering getting it but I remember playing it with a friend a while back, and while it was a blast, my base always go filled with enemy agents and tourists. Can this be prevented easily that stupid me couldn't figure out?/worth $10?
Reinstalling this from a disk. Hopefully I can use the tips you guys have posted and have a good functional base. Will post some screenshots if the disk isn't damaged and the install works fine.
Also the files refer to Shen Yu as "Chinese_Guy" according to the installer.
