Persona takes what a lot of people love about SMT and relegates it to second place; the demons, the mythology and the teambuilding are less important to Persona than in SMT. In any SMT you need to worry not only about your current party, but your backup roster and potential fusion/recruit fodder. It's basically three times the work of managing the MC's Persona roster with all the complexity that brings. There's also tone differences which are a big deal for some people; I wouldn't call mainline SMT 'edgy' because while the atmosphere is generally dark and oppressive (world's ended, fight for survival, kill your friends over irreconcilable ideology differences) there's still lots of levity in sidequests, demon negotiations, NPC dialogue etc.
I don't care about tone as much as I do gameplay because you can go from a space opera in Strange Journey to pulpy detective novel in Soul Hackers to Nocturne's minimalist abstract conception world and it all feels 'MegaTen'. Persona focusing on characters and interactions is fine, but what I wouldn't do for a new Persona that let other party members mess about with Persona management. Glad to hear you're enjoying Nocturne, though.
After playing SMT, i do feel like Persona is easier though
You only have yourself to worry about with Persona's and your team is very set on their development
Unlike say Nocturne where you'll probably have to be with a team of less than 4 early on by fusion

Altough in SMT you can make a super powerfull party wheras in Persona you are pretty much stuck with their range of skills and weaknesses

I was honestly surprised that Raidou Kuzunoha is an Action RPG rather than turn based
An interesting change
I really love the music of it though
Nocturne is a gorgeous game with a pretty good soundtrack that I cannot stand playing and I think it's genuinely awful.
I know it's hardcore to say it's the best game ever but it's really not. It's frustrating and the fights aren't challenging in it because they're cleverly designed- they're hard because the computer gets to spam Beast/Dragon eye all the fucking time as well as Mudo/Hama constantly.
Feel free to debate that with me but if it ever got remade (well, again technically) I'd wait to find out if they toned down the stupid shit the AI can cheat with.
So far i've stopped playing Nocturne twice because of game overs that felt cheap
Like how i keep being put in encounters with like, 5 enemies to only afterwards give me ANOTHER encounter that i can't run away from and i die
I've barely even started and it's already frustrating
[editline]5th May 2017[/editline]
It's even worse when the enemy group loves to constantly use Dia to neglect whatever damage i did
That's how nocturne and mainline SMT games work though. It's part of the "charm" or lack of it.

My ass still hurts from playing SMT 4 a while back. And I did play Persona 4 before so it's not like I didn't have any idea how things were supposed to work.
SMT IV 's difficulty curve is fucking weird as shit

That looks a lot better.
Whoever thought Insta-kill was a good idea in the development team needs to be fired.
This is terrible experience for NG+, barely able to grind without accidentaly ambushing\instant kill really sucks.

Select that persona out of combat, and then you'll always start any fight with them equipped. That way, you won't be blindsided by a Hama or Mudo until you deliberately switch to something that's vulnerable in combat.

As much as I rag on 4:A's story being too persona-y it's how I imagine Press Turns working right. You can see a enemy winding up for something and choose how hard you want to push in while gaining icons.
In Nocturne you get no chance to outsmart the AI or use press turns effectively. They just get to pop Dragons Eye and give themselves 4-5 extra turns for no reason other then "we want to kill the player at least once with this".
A average boss should not be able to Dragons Eye, buff it's spell damage 4 times then use it's last turn to Megidola you on repeat. That's stupid and while you can attempt to fight it it's not very clever either.
Then there's the "if you use buffs a certain number of times the boss goes apeshit and nukes you with no warning" which is just bad game design. It's killing the player just for the sake of killing them. Nocturne is bad.
Oh i think there's a misunderstanding, i'm not talking about the battle skills but [sp] Ryuji's Insta-Kill confidant ability[/sp] which is seriously frustrating for money grinding on story stages.

If it's money you need just grind the mementos bosses with confusion. Never worry for money again.
EXP grinding then the enemies weren't giving you enough to matter anyway as it only works on battles that are 7 levels lower than you. (iirc)
Can't you just farm enemies of your level anyways without attempting ambush?
Can't you just farm enemies of your level anyways without attempting ambush?
You *could* but there's bonus cash to be earned by clearing during a ambush phase so you miss out on that.

That greatly helps for money

I'm at early stages and in mementos the enemy runs away, in palace i get impatient trying to trigger a normal fight without ambush and without being noticed.
I just want to complete the registry. I even have the better EXP ring so i can reduce the cost of buying personas while farming.

If you're gunning for 100% compendium here's what I did
1: Get 2,000,000 (ballparked) from mementos boss cheesing.
2: Wait till Flu Season and bully the reaper for 72,000XP per suicide. Reach level 95 in like half a hour
3: Save and go to fusion town, you now can fuse everything for free and the only cost is pulling stuff out of the compendium.
EZ PZ

Beast/Dragon Eye only gets used in certain circumstances; when some enemies are fighting by themselves (Setanta with no back-up will ALWAYS use it whereas Setanta with back-up will NEVER use it), when bosses are at a certain health threshold or when the boss you're fighting is Mot. If you've got enough evasion or a single Null/Drain/Repel (and you should be stacking hitrate down/evasion up as much as possible) then you'll get through the Eye spam just fine. It's more like the boss's "panic button" than a "FUCK YOU" button.

Mot is not an average boss and if you're debuffing him, buffing yourself and attacking his weakness he'll barely have time to do anything. He wiped me the first time I fought him because I had barely any Zio-casters, then I went and fused up more and wiped the floor with him.

Mot has recorded evidence that he's capable of not letting the player have a single turn with his use of it. Like if I recall correctly he can do it several times in one turn.
Also I've had bosses spam startle or the eyes right off the bat and then use it every turn just to give them more turns. It's ech

I like Haru's look, but the lack of bangs always makes me think hairline for a split second.
Speaking of Haru, definitely the worst voicework of the main cast, not terrible, but just, very "90s Anime dubbing". Not awful again, but brings the, in my opinion, near perfect voice cast down a little.
My ass still hurts from playing SMT 4 a while back. And I did play Persona 4 before so it's not like I didn't have any idea how things were supposed to work.
SMTIV is unreasonably hard until you get out of Naraku, at which point everything tones down a bit.
And then you get lost and end up fighting enemies 5-15 levels above yours. But you think this is normal because Naraku rocked your shit. And then you end up overleveled because Naraku taught you how to actually play the game. And then the rest of the game is a cake walk aside from a few bosses because you're now overleveled.
And then you walk back into Naraku and it still somehow rocks your shit.
I can't believe this is the only game where I would want to repeatedly watch the rolling credits
What a fucking great game
