So as a skeptic I bought undertale and I just have 1 important question... does it get better because the game basically gave me a really good appetizer then gave me an rotten undercooked steak.
[sp]The beginning was just really fucking good. It showed me mechanics where you can do things peacefully with talking or do things as a brute with attacking which gave me high hopes about the game.
Toriel was honestly the best part so far just because of how interesting her character was but that was probably unintentional on my part. That means a lot coming from a guy who calls people incestual goatfuckers for liking Toriel.
I found her sheltering to be really creepy, but I felt bad for her because she probably lost a child or something. I wanted to call her out on it but the only options were "PARTICIPATE IN THE ILLUSION" and "TELL HER TO FUCK OFF", so I had to tell her to fuck off but still I liked it. When I was trying to prove myself, I ended up mucking during the minigame and that actually enhanced the experience. If you go below a certain HP the projectiles then just intentionally avoid you which was pretty clever given her sheltering character. I ended up killing her, which actually made me feel bad because I think that was optional but probably not...[/sp]
[sp]But... then you get Sans and Papyrus and jesus fuck the tonal shift was just offensive. I know where this is going to go: Papyrus is lonely just wants a friend, his younger brother is trying really hard to get him a friend which is pretty lame. The gameplay is awful because the enemies have 1 solution when earlier I thought there was multiple. I just had to stop playing it because I genuinely felt offended that there was a downgrade in story, writing, and gameplay.[/sp]
[editline]4[/editline]
Like honestly I just loved the game solely because of the first part. That's a good $5 right there. I just don't want to tarnish my enjoyment of the game if the game is exactly like the second level.
No offense but this is the best post I've ever seen in any of the Undertale threads. Everything about it is amazing

why am i not surprised you got offended when you reached the part with the character that makes jokes lmao
anyways tho iirc you have the option to run away from any of the minor fights so if you're running into the same enemy over and over you can just do that. as for the characters, you're not around any one character for very long as you go through all the levels, so why not keep going. the game gets better as it goes along imo but it's not like this game is super long. either stick with it and find out for yourself if you like it or don't lol. it's not really a big commitment so idk why you're asking us.

Keep playing and maybe you'll realize that there's more to these monsters than you think. Sans and Papyrus are two of the most beloved characters in this game for a reason.
Also you can spare Toriel.
You murderer.

I'm not offended at the jokes, even if the jokes were top notch I would've still disliked it because it was a terrible shift in tone.

I'm actually curious to what the alternative is because this was entirely accidental.
[sp]I'm guessing after she's at like 20hp, I'm supposed to spare her? She told me to prove myself and I'm like "ok".[/sp]

Just keep spamming spare until she stops attacking you [sp]and then stab her while her guard is down like the cruel fuck you are[/sp] then eventually she'll let you spare her after a bunch of guilt tripping
You also don't need to worry about her killing you, she backs off when you reach critical damage.

Rip. Wouldn't have guessed that.
Also it looks like my stupidity saved some dogs. My intent was to fight them but since I got this new weapon that changed attacking mechanics and I ignored the "PRESS Z TO ATTACK AGAIN" I kept missing and just petting them.
honestly i accidentally killed toriel my first run and still regret it to this day.
I feel pretty lucky that I didn't get incessantly told not to kill anything in my first playthrough like what happened when Undertale first came out, I killed Toriel because I thought that was the one unavoidable kill and played the whole thing again after I'd beaten it once and found out that wasn't the case.
Also, is there any word on the kickstarter goals being done now that there's the art book? Mainly the comic.

When you beat the game I want you to come back to this post
When you beat the game I want you to come back to this post
I beat it and I still have a similar complaint.
[sp]The game is honestly a solid 10/10... only if you exclude the flowey earthbound fight.
I got the neutral ending. This guy obviously likes earthbound but I think it was a bad decision to have the flowey fight in it. The neutral should've ended with Asgore breaking down or something when he discovers that you killed his wife, or something else if you didn't. I don't know, I'm not a writer, but I do know that the Flowey fight was one of the worst things about this game because of how out of place it was.
I know that it's probably all explained if I do true pacifist. I talked to a friend and he said that I should do a true pacifist run for things to make sense but I already get an idea of what Flowey's part is in all of this since I did pay attention to the story.[/sp]
[sp]The only thing I take back about my post is the gameplay being awful, and sans' character because he makes up for it in later scenes. Me saying that the gameplay is awful was a DSPGaming mistake because I equipped the glove, a weapon that requires me to press Z multiple times when I assumed that the combat was just "press z once when the line is in the middle", and I assumed that the game didn't want me to hit dogs in heavy armor because it's a terrible thing to do.[/sp]
[editline]4[/editline]
[sp]I guess I should take back the part about the tonal shift from the tutorial to the game because I don't think that the creator thought of a scenario where the player accidently kills Toriel and actually feels bad about it immediately after.[/sp]

[sp]You only saw a portion of the game's backstory and lore, try a pacifist run, and then if you can stomach it, a genocide run; they are the most revealing and contain honestly best parts of the game. Also, USE THE PHONE EVERYWHERE, trust me.

Well he did for a certain situation at least. If someone restarts right after killing her and does it again but spares her correctly flowey makes fun of them for it. Gotta give props for that because that's funny as shit.
[editline]26th November 2016[/editline]
FYI if you restart now to do a pacifist run, some of the dialogue will be changed. So it won't be totally boring redoing all the same shit. Well I think it does at least but maybe that's only if you befriended the characters pre-restart, idk for sure.

The game's tonal shift is entirely hinged on Toriel.
[sp] You are SUPPOSED to feel bad for killing her, and giving into the standard gamey instincts you'd use in something like Pokemon. The general lesson is that you shouldn't attack at all, the game literally punks you into killing her if you try to exploit the Pokemon-like 'low-hp defeat' mechanic, which isn't actually a mechanic at all.
Right afterwards the game quickly slides you into a slippery slope of horrible feelings if you keep killing, the dog couple especially sends this message home if you kill them.
The entire game can be beaten without ever touching the fight button, save for a single fight at the end.[/sp]

This happened to me when I played. I just kept feeling bad afterwards, despite the skeleton silliness that followed, so I started again. I think I damn near shit my pants when he got all "I k n o w w h a t y o u d i d" after I figured out how to save Toriel. For a guy who dived in to this game not knowing very much at all, that scene was genuinely menacing as shit.
Definitely sold me on the game, though.

To me it actually made me quite sad because he [sp]brought up how she was a joke cracker, and I remember reading her journal to check if she was an escaped mental asylum patient[/sp]
I took it as a warning, but I didn't take it that seriously because I didn't think I would fuck up any more than I already have.

Then again, can't you [sp]avoid triggering the Asgore Fight and Omega Flowey fight if you complete all of the dates beforehand, and unlock the True Lab? Thus not needing to fight full stop?[/sp] Or is it not actually possible to do that on your initial run even if you know what to do?

[sp] I don't remember if you get told this in a neutral run, but she was writing jokes for a specific person, you'll find out in a pacifist run.[/sp]

Neutral Run Sans Dinner Date (skipped the first one, took the second):
[sp]She was writing jokes for Sans, I believe. Sans one day went to a door and played pranks on the person behind the door. Later days they exchanged knock-knock jokes until one day, the woman behind the door never showed up again. This is when Sans says "I know what you did" or something as a warning.[/sp]
Was a pretty good scene because it made me feel smart for remembering that [sp]toriel liked bad jokes[/sp], and it was a callback to me making a bad choice that I regret.

this is creative but it kind of stings because the animations for flowey and mettaton they did were beautiful and while sans has a LOT of them...
none of them are good
Seriously dude, do a Pacifist run.
I don't want to spoil anything for you, but you're missing two entire, amazing sections of the game.

[sp]Yeah, you have to do the Omega Flowey Fight even if you do everything beforehand. In that case, you beat him and in the post-fight phonecall, undyne says she has a letter for you. Or maybe just to come see her and then she gives you the letter, I can't remember.[/sp]

He did tho. You forgot that there's a reset button in the main menu.
And you even get [sp]special dialogue from Flowey for resetting and not killing Toriel after you've killed her in a previous game (without beating the game, which you already did)[/sp]
Playing the game without killing anyone is 10x more important than genocide, genocide just gets boring aside from like 2 moments.
Please please at least do Pacifist.

Genocide is a lot more potent if you do it after pacifist, anyway, assuming of course that you get really attached to the game after the pacifist run.

[sp]You're unable to do the Alphy's Date until you do the Omega Flowey fight, then after you finish that fight, assuming you've completed everything else up to this point, Flowey will tell you to go talk to Alphys and that'll start that date which leads into the true labs and Asriel fight.[/sp]

I had already nominated it for the something in my eye award so I gave villain in need of a hug to LISA: The Painful. Just about everyone in that game needs a hug. But it def deserves the nom there too.

You'd probably like the neutral ending on your second playthrough then.
[sp]ASGORE breaks down and kills himself if you try to spare him again saying he wants you to be free and he just wishes he could be with his wife and son again. Flowey shows up to destroy his soul before you can take it. He skips the fight though saying the souls would just rebel again if he did.[/sp]

Asshole Run ending Spoilers: [sp]Except for asshole run. A friend spoiled that if you did an asshole run it corrupts the game permanently.[/sp]
