It's a pain in the ass, not very intuitive to use. Building structures and whatnot isn't too hard, but I can already tell wiring everything and getting it working is gonna fucking suck. You have to enter "player mode" and essentially wire everything by hand with a screwdriver/wrench as if you were a player.
aaaaaaaAAAAAAA
There's an editor for creating your own subs though. I'm working on one that emulates the layout of a real submarine more closely, though I'm afraid of making it too long. Does anyone know if the level generator analyzes the size of the submarine? I'd hate to make one that can't fit through basic tunnels.
tunnels generate to match the size of the sub. small sub makes small tunnels. big sub big tunnels
My sub is actually coming out to be pretty compact. That feel when you successfully wire some things and get them going. One thing is for sure, it's gonna be a clusterfuck of wiring once it's all done, just like the real thing.
Hmm. I'm running into a problem where everything shorts out on my custom sub. The reactor starts up, but even with auto-control on it will produce too much energy and blow out all the junction boxes. I'm not sure how to counter it, they all blow up at around 2000 degrees which is way lower than on the average sub.

post your sub and i'll see if i can help
Only the Captain spawn exists right now and I'm not sure if the ballast system is wired correctly, but here it is in the current form.

dont wire multiple things to the reactor. i added another junction box connected to the other junction boxes and is the only one connected to the reactor. your ballast tank pumps need to be turned on in edit mode otherwise you have to turn them on every time you start, which you might prefer but i've turned them on for now. also pumps need to be linked to the hull section they're supposed to pump water in and out of. just use space to link like the oxygen generator to vents. make sure you link to the hull and not the backpanel or anything else. i've linked the two ballast tank pumps you have but not the other pumps around your sub
also i really like your wiring. i tired my best to wire my additions like you did but i think i messed up somewhere. also you'll need to move your dive suits since you cant climb ladders wearing them

Cool, thanks. The 2 pumps you linked for me should be the only 2 ballast tank pumps, the ballast rooms I built for them should hold enough volume of water I believe. I also didn't know about the dive suits, I had put them up by the airlock but apparently they fall right through platforms. I'll have to work something out with those.
The wiring is all over the place because I didn't know the junction boxes had a 5 connection limit until it was too late, so everything is hooked up haphazardly. I made multiple links to different areas because I thought maybe the reactor was overloading a specific area and I could even out the energy flow. Inadvertently created a fairly redundant system I think.
I'll keep working on it, should only really need a few tweaks and the waypoints placed before it's ready. I designed it for a 4-5 man crew so I think it'll work great with the current netcode.
Captain waypoint works fine, but I place an engineer waypoint exactly like the ones on the other subs and it crashes upon entering the game. Hmmmm.
I like the more centralized SS13 feel, I don't think bases and whatnot would fit too well with the design of the game. However, finding wrecked subs or maybe small abandoned bases you have to suit up and explore would be awesome. There's something genuinely terrifying about leaving the boat and swimming a good distance away, you start to wonder if you'll have enough air, if you'll be attacked, or if you'll even be able to find your way back.
The idea mentioned earlier that's like SS13's Syndicate mode sounds really cool too. Have a small number of guys spawn in a mini-sub or base outside of the main one with tons of lethal equipment, then have them assault the main boat. However, some things would have to be changed. I find it particularly silly how the reactor is always off to the side near the edges of the boat, when it really should be in the center as the most protected area. It's the heart of the boat and should be treated like so.
Well bases would be cool because you could make them huge-- huge, stationary hulks of humanity and science/technology (etc.) miles and miles down in the unfathomably cold, dark depths. That offers a lot of potential for fun with flooding, fighting, exploration, etc. For single player even, maybe it could act as like a home for you to return to and store your goods in, your sub, etc.
Think of it like The Abyss. With bases, big subs, little subs...

Hell maybe one day they'll throw a surface component in. That'd be interesting. I completely agree with you about the reactors though, at least as far as the base idea goes. For the subs, I think it's just to mimic the real-life setup of a lot of submarines, where the engine compartment, turbines, and such are located. The reactors usually aren't right in the center; they're not completely aft either-- center-aft I guess you could call it.

Honestly, I love this game. To death. It's an original concept, and I love the way the water behaves. I really hope they run wild with this in the future and expand it as far as they can.
Captain waypoint works fine, but I place an engineer waypoint exactly like the ones on the other subs and it crashes upon entering the game. Hmmmm.
if there's not enough space for the player to spawn the game will crash. make sure the waypoint isnt too low that the legs spawn in a floor. i think the waypoint marks where the head is but not certain. if it still isnt working post your map again and i can take a look
I got it worked out! I think it's done. Might be a few things I'm missing, but it should be a fully operational sub now. There's no security clearances on the doors, so traitor would be hell, but there's also no C4, detonators, or stun grenades because there really isn't a use for stuff like that. Couple of harpoon guns in the airlock, but it'd be hard to sneak over there since it's above the con. Security spawns closer to the con than everyone else (other than the skipper) so he and the cap can run and grab them at the start if they feel the need to. Reactor is smack dab in the middle of the boat, so it's easy to keep an eye on it.
Working out water flow was a pain. Flooding was strange and hard to manage, it would collect in some rooms. It still collects in the small bilge at the bottom of engineering that connects to a ballast tank, but you could manually commandeer the ballast tank and pump it out if need be. People don't really need to access that area so it shouldn't be a problem. Water eventually flows down into the bilge below the reactor and railgun room. The way it is set up, if all doors are closed, a leak in the aft of the ship will have to fill the entire engineering space before crossing over to the forward cone, and vise versa.
The ladder system discourages rushing to grab a dive suit, making things a bit tougher. I'm also considering adding a rear/top railgun because engaging an enemy on the stern would require going up through the con into the sail, out the front of the sail, then swimming all the way around to the back. I don't want to add an additional airlock because they make it easy for people to flood the boat.
It's designed for 4-5 people. You guys are welcome to try it out and see if you can find things I missed. I'm on duty today, but will probably be hosting a server a little later to see how it works with multiple people.

Oh bummer. I didn't know everyone has to have the map for it to work, thought maybe that was server-side and it built the map for clients. That sucks.

just direct them here or link in the game chat. you can paste the link into the lobby chat with ctrl v but they cant copy it out so make it a tiny url link so they dont have to type too much

you need a button outside the airlock or people going out wont be able to close the door. then anyone else who wants to go out has to cause a flood when they open the inner airlock door. also i fel like you need another pump at the bottom left at the base of the ladder next to the ballast tank. water cant be drained out of there unless you open the ballast tank
otherwise nice work
If only there was a 3d fps sub game, that would be fun as fuck.
As well as, ill be hosting the custom maps on my server. If anyone wants to play on em.

Kinda did the airlock thing on purpose. If you want to go out, there's gotta be someone behind you who closes/opens the door for you. The general design of the boat is focused around encouraging teamwork, such as the way the railgun has to be loaded down in weps but fires from the command area.
That bottom left area is another bilge, it's designed to catch any stray water from small leaks and whatnot. It does have to be manually pumped from the ballast tank once full, but that's just another thing to manage. I don't really like how the boats that come with the game are "easy" in the sense that you just push a button here and there to do everything by yourself. My boat is more designed to be a teamwork boat, because I've found when playing online most people just end up really fucking bored. There's one dude driving and one dude on the gun, everyone else just kinda fucks around and eventually griefs. I made mine more "difficult" in hopes it would give more people stuff to do and discourage faffing about.
so this game can be some serious shit
a guy had been security for a couple of rounds, finding me, knocking me out and taking shit (namely ID card, o2 tank, important shit.) i got tired of this so i decided to fight back. i had him find me, follow me into the reactor room, and since he knew i had no ID card he closed the door so i couldnt get out. i had him follow me up to the reactor itself, quickly pulled a few rods out of a closet, and shoved them into the reactor. cue the reactor blowing up both of us and sinking the sub. sweet revenge.
reactors blow up straight away if you load more than one fuel rod into it?
I really hate how easy it is for a sec officer to grief. literally fuck all you can do to defend yourself. I was admin this one round and a security guard was beating me to death because I was an engineer in the reactor room (I was grabbing some wires) and he wouldn't stop beating me even though I was on the edge of death. told me no one was allowed in the reactor room, not even engineers, and I couldn't do shit even though I was admin. no kick, no ban. I ended up dying and letting the round play out until they fucked up then I reset it.
[editline]24th October 2015[/editline]
I hate how you're super OP as sec, though. I can tank harpoon guns til doom's day, yet I touch someone once with a baton and they're KO'd? this same griefing sec guy attacked me the round after the reset and I grabbed the harpoon gun and shots would either glance off of his helmet, or do 1/10th damage to him or something ridiculously small.
lure him into the airlock and drown him
We really need a dedicated server.
airlocks are easy to avoid dying in. if someone turns the pump on and starts flooding it, just turn it off. you can prevent em from opening the outside door by keeping the inside one open.
plus it'd be a dead giveaway putting a diving suit on and then going to the airlock, he'd know I was trying to kill him. so he'd either grab a suit himself (which means he won't insta-die from the pressure if I managed to get the doors open) or just not follow me in.
they gotta add robusting to this game like SS13 has. I'd love to be able to swing my fists at people and crack some jaws.

He puts one on and then you shoot him with the harpoon gun.
we did a very tiny sub that is practically fucking useless, and i was the captain. the sub just refused to go up when we got ourselves stuck between 2 walls, and it kept on bouncing up and down into the wall below us for no reason like a bouncy castle. after a while of people just dying the reactor exploded, killing everyone but 3 people. one got locked in the ballast, shot to death by another dude with the railgun who subsequently drowned. the last one got himself out of the sub and proceeded to swim for like 20 minutes to kill the target with a welder. when he got to the target everybody but the admin couldnt see the fucking moloch. at that poine he just ran out of air too.
10/10 best waste of time
loving the new bleeding mechanic. makes getting harpooned much more dangerous. just wish there was a way to replenish bandages / med syringes.
also, prawns are bugged to fuck. if you shoot them with railguns and they somehow manage to die (railguns only reliably work against molochs), they get bugged at 0hp and attack the sub forever. I think the only way to properly kill them is with a harpoon gun, but that never works cause everyone always grabs them ASAP and wastes ammo on stupid shit.
had a few really fun games. can't wait to see how much the dev adds to this game, I'd really pay good money for it if it got fleshed out more. game lag is pretty much nonexistent now, which is awesome!
[editline]24th October 2015[/editline]
we played a few traitor rounds and I was traitor on a 6 man sub. made the task of assassinating my target harder by trying to lessen collateral damage to other crewmates. made it more of a challenge, rather than just going around killing everyone. the one dude I got assigned to kill though was really chill, and as I beat him to death in the back of the sub (we were flooded cause I blew the reactor) he just said "dude. stop." and died. I felt bad but eyyyyooooo
I just downloaded it, any servers up?
I've been trying to work on a massive Typhoon sub, but the game doesn't like huge subs very much. Tends to spawn with the top barrier of the level going right through it, and the water/air flow mechanics outright break for some reason. Had a lot of good ideas come out of it though, like multiple reactors. You could have a sub armed to the teeth with railguns and have a separate reactor on a completely separate circuit dedicated to providing weapons power.
Also, I have never been able to join another server. Have hosted fine, but always fail to connect to a different one. Any remedys for that?
someone decided to make a content package replacing heads so i contributed

even though it's a cesspool, you guys should check out the /v/ barotrauma threads. they get created on a nightly basis and it's a good way to keep track of who is hosting servers and what's going on.
the dev also regularly posts in the thread as well, so you can give feedback / request features. he's really chill.
just go to /v/ then catalogue then search barotrauma
[editline]28th October 2015[/editline]
also the latest updates have made the game much more playable. tonnes of fun and whacky shit goes down now, it's awesome
