So I've been having boatloads of fun with the British tech tree as of late. Besides the obvious talismans and premium accounts, what can I do to grind the tank tree more effectively? I get roughly 1-2k VRP per game without premium.

There's no secrets like there are with planes where you can load up a premium Duck, pray for not-Norway, and print money.
If you're anal about minmax RP/hour, you can rush points, cap, fight until death, quit. I don't recommend this.
Ok now some real advice for squeezing extra XP out of tanks:
Use your machineguns. Most players like to suicide crash their planes, so if you put even a single penny sized hole in their hull it'll be counted as a kill. Planes are of course worth much more than tank kills.
Also spray at tanks, even pinging someone in the tracks counts as a kill assist.
I think the He 100 might be my new favorite low tier plane. That thing is fast as fuck and I'm pretty sure its wings don"t rip until a pretty ridiculous speed. The speedometer in the cockpit goes up to 900 km/h so I'm assuming its rip speed is pretty damn high. On the flipside, it also has a really low stall speed.

You can damage the tracks and main gun of most tanks with your machine guns, which is why you get hit-credit for doing so. If you spend enough time, you can detrack the Maus with 7.62 and .50 machine guns.
G.55S with the universal belts is really, really good. One of the better premium vehicles that I've bought in a while.

I heard if you pen armor but don't kill, any subsequent shots there in that spot will go straight through (so you could theoretically kill with your mg if the main went through). Any truth to this? I might have heard it here but I can't check right now.

I'm pretty sure they never added this as a feature.
MG kills come more from lazy armor modeling which has holes (M103 nightmares) or goofy trickshots. Use to be, back when Era Is had HE, you could kill a Maus by getting HE to fragment through the hull roof vents and catch it on fire with the Tetrarch.

Be happy you don't get stuck with Krymsk like me. As an attacker it takes like a month to get to the ground forces that you can actually kill without instantly dying but even then occasionally someone camps them.
Berlin's not great either. Basically "fly low and fast af" the musical with almost nothing in the way of interesting scenery.
