Stuff like the Fritz X bombs have been talked about, and those are essentially Air mounted versions of what we have now on the ground. Sans the rocket engine in that case. Think about this realistically for a moment, if we did have them in the game, knowing gaijin, you know for a fact the moment that missile hops off the rail it's in the hands of RNGesus.
It's a jump yeah, and a new game mechanic, but if it's supported by new systems, like flares for instance, it simply constitutes another random system into the layer. Yes it takes less skill, but frankly jet dogfights are shit anyway because of the particularities of fighting at those speeds.
Like imagine all those absolutely mind numbing moments where you have to chase people in jet matches.
Now image if you get rid of like 70% of them by hocking a missile at them and at least forcing them to turn back into the fight. Suddenly it gets a lot more lively, a lot more decisive.
Yes this means bad things for certain planes, namely bombers, but then maybe we can get gaijin off their asses to design better structure for the maps that take this shit into account. So maybe you could fly something like the Canberra Mk 6 in an actual interdiction role.
Well, I mean it kind of should be.
Early missiles, especially if you're talking about the ones in the mid 50s to early 60s were pretty bad. To the point where they probably wouldn't even affect air to air combat that much if they were in multiplayer. Most kills would still be with guns. Although, I guess it is fair to say that it'll force a player to do something, because if they just fly straight and level a missile might hit them.
Overall it seems like too much a game changer to me though, and Gaijin hates doing things, so they wouldn't write whole new mechanics and game modes just to make something that all 6 people who regularly fly end game rank 5 would see and use.
I still think it'd be cool though.

If you wanted to do player guided air to air missiles like the ATGMs ingame already, the X-4 totally exists, as does the Fritz glide bomb as goon already mentioned.

Also keep in mind that all IR missiles until the mid-1970s were rear-aspect only, meaning that they could only target jet exhausts

Which makes for really fun combat tactics and none of the "shoot at a radar blip 30 miles away" that people think all air to air combat with missiles is.
3rd generation fighters are the sweet spot where missiles and avionics had gotten advanced enough that things got really interesting, but it still rough, ineffective, and short ranged enough that good old fashioned maneuvering and dogfighting was still a requirement. What's especially interesting about this time period is that barring a handful of exceptions, few planes of this generation were designed with that in mind. Finding out that dogfighting and maneuverability was still important in a post-missile world is what drove 4th generation aircraft design that resulted in planes like the Su-27 and F-15.
To me, the AMRAAM signaled the end of the air combat that makes for interesting video games. With that missile, you get a mass produced and commonly available active radar missile that doesn't require the support (and work) of the launching platform all the way into impact.
In a hypothetical Cold War Thunder, I think the game should end at the very beginning of the 4th generation. That way you get iconic planes like the F-15, F-16, Su-27, and MiG-29, but they're the earliest iterations of them (and only an AIM-120A) so there's still a decent amount of flying by the seat of your pants.
Keep in mind carrying the missiles would slow you down due to drag/weight. I don't think adding sidewinders n shit to the existing planes would cause that big of a deal, and I really doubt most people would use them. I think it would be more interesting to add planes that can carry pilot-guided ATG missiles like the bullpup

Because the game is terrible really, I only like air battles cause that was my main way of making money. Hurricane with the 40mm tank guns and easy killing other tanks and even bombers with these babies. Then I had 2 bombers which I just used to destroy bases and gain more Lions and RP
Tank battles were fun I admit but the german tanks are like :zoid: against russians, spawn kills and generally impenetrable Russian armour makes it a challenge but not impossible!
[sp]Shame I dont have my account anymore, i did enjoy this game[/sp]
Can we confirm if its mouse guided or not?
It says it right there, "semi-automatic", which refers to SACLOS.

This is gaijin were talking about.
I have no idea what they use to govern whats mouse and whats keyboard guided or if they do it realistically or not, I don't actually own any ATGM tanks yet so I have not got any experience with them in war thunder.
I mean't if anyones gone onto the test environment and checked, its not hard to just say yes or no.
"Hey Scotty, got any games? I'm bored"
"Ever played War Thunder?"
"Nope."
"Ok here's the controls"

YES Akk of my cummings is coming true
Completely off-topic, but I actually got a 5-minute ride on a Zugkraftwagen 18t (without all that armour, of course) in The Netherlands. It's quite a large beast, the tracks were up to my waist line and they had brought a ladder for everyone to get up.
Overloon War Museum was the place, they've got some really sweet exhibits over there.
so some f-80 is bringing in 3 p-26s in his squad into RB jet battles and having them shoot down all their teammates on the runway

That was literally me when I got the T50. My BR thing was still low enough where most enemies only had shit that could be penned by MG fire and had crap cannons so I was basically able to wipe the map clean.
Attacker FB 1 feels like a very comfy vehicle for a GB 7.0 lineup. Shame I can't say the same about Conway, though - it just feels like a Centurion Mk 10 that's worse in every single way aside from raw penetration and shell mass.
Leo is finally mine, time to grind for another few years to actually get parts for it.

get yo preload on, son.
What is the Hetzer made of? Plywood? Styrofoam? A composite material of sawdust and bubblegum?
It's taken a long time to get a feel for it, my close and quick playstyle that usually puts in me in the top 3 is completely incompatible.
[editline]29th September 2016[/editline]
I mean a lot of german tanks are made of butter even while angled but this is the worst offender
Had the update preloaded 90% which due to gaijins wonderfull servers had taken most of the day running in the background.
Patch comes out and apparently because I didn't finish the preload I now need to dl it all again.
