It sucks how pretty much every server now is either like, "basically everything is allowed don't even try to roleplay" or "basically nothing is allowed don't do anything ever"
When it's a wiz round and the HoP is being a faggot.

Goon RP sounds exactly what you guys are looking for.
Goon RP sounds exactly what you guys are looking for.
Honestly can you stop it
You've been repeating this every single time, we get it, you like Goon
I've stated too many times why i don't like the bloody server
Where did you go to sleep?
A cryo cell. I'm not sure if he just meant that a cryo cell wasn't the same thing as stasis or if there are actual stasis pods on the station.

ok well in that case for you no you will never find any good rp server that fits your taste then
i was mostly answering these two guys
I'd just love to see an RP server that actually left people to their own devices to RP, rather than have someone jump in the moment something remotely deviating from the round plan happens.

It sucks how pretty much every server now is either like, "basically everything is allowed don't even try to roleplay" or "basically nothing is allowed don't do anything ever"
that yeah, there actually exists an rp server where its about fun and not "muh immershun"
i only repeat it because people keep saying "oh but if ONLY there was a server SOMEWHERE where rp wasn't bad oh the humanity too bad such a server doesn't actually exist nuh huh no way jose too bad all rp servers are condemned to terribadness no way in heck that there could possibly exist a good rp server because good rp server is an oximoron but could you imagine if there was such a server that had actually reasonable rules what a world that would be huh too bad that's not the case because its actually just a pipe dream" and I'm just saying they should give goon a shot
i used to dislike goon because i was all about winning and the fact that some of the systems were obfuscated put me off but when i actually played a couple of rounds and decided to not give a shit and just try to have fun it just clicked that i actually prefer good admins over the ability to be able to know what all the chem recipes are
Shit like this makes my blood boil. Name and shame these assholes, I feel like going back onto SS13 just to take a dump on these idiots out of spite.
It was Paradise lol, tell them shame on them for disrespecting a man with liver cancer
[editline]27th July 2016[/editline]
Hoooooly fuck. Apollo Station is possibly worse than paradise. I went on, the HoP was dragging a crate with some armor in it that I wanted, so I took it, and he chased me, so I pushed him over. I got admin PMed in the middle of the struggle with "What are you doing?"
I was permabanned a minute later for assaulting the HoP and not responding to admin PMs. The HoP was on full health. wat
i havent played ss13 for a long time because of shitty admins
some things never change lol

I was more going "I wish there were more servers like that" because I don't really like Goon either.

I'm guessing you mean a cryo pod in medbay?
Paradise has an actual room full of cryosleep pods where other servers have all the other servers have a line of bedrooms(to the left of the pool). If you climb in one and then log out, then after 5 or 10 minutes you get removed from the round and your job gets opened up so new people can take your place.

I helped a guy in Atmos set up his dream project. I think we got 50 Heat exchanges in before we ran out of room.

Why would you do this?
Why would you do this?
You can ask that about 99% of atmos projects, or hell, engineering projects in general.
I spawned in as HoS, and there's this guy on the security radio saying I need to come to brig if I want my gear. I responded like "Why do you have my gear?" and he was like "Fine, you don't get it." So I enlisted the help of two randoms in return for weapons and we literally hunted down and subdued the traitor. Turned out to be the HoP usurping my job. I said over radio "Now we show them what happens to usurpers..." while stripping the guy, but then my connection cut out and when I came back I had to download content.
Colonial Marines leaked yo.
I'm sure if I'm allowed to share links cuz warez and such but uh, yeah. It's leaked by the same dude who did the goon leak.

Isn't CM technically /tg/ or Baystation based? If that's the case them withholding code had been somewhat illegal anyway as it's supposed to be redistributed under creative commons.

I'm one of the devs on CM.
Feels bad man to have all your hard work just dumped out like that.

It isn't. We specifically branched from an old version of Baystation before they switched to AGPL3. The mandate for Baystation derivatives to remain open-source only came with AGPL3 and the "new" master controller.
You guys are still really scummy for abusing that loophole in GPL.
You also broke the loophole. AntiEvade.dm. Nice try.

I don't see how that's scummy at all. There's no "loophole", we're just using an older version because we wanted our weapon stats/secrets to remain secret. Many servers were closed source during the era we pulled our code from. Only with the inclusion of the new Master Controller from Goon did AGPL3 emerge.
In our eyes, so many games are ruined because people pilfer the code and learn every single last detail. There's no exploring to be done.
The average player does not codedive. Look at chemistry on tg. 90% of people dont know the details on what chems do, just the basics, and are often surprised to find stuff.
The reason most open source stuff doesnt have this secrecy element is because we all go "HEY LOOK AT ME IM ADDING THIS STUFF ITS HAPPENING EVERYONE LOOK FANCY PICTURES".
if you simply don't talk about it, most people aren't going to notice
sure a few powergamers will code dive and grab the numbers but the average players aren't going to care.
Just rebase from a modern codebase with proper lagfixes, and do obscurity via silence instead of by closed sourcing, because all it does is create arguments and problems like what happened yesterday.
[editline]30th July 2016[/editline]
also you're going to figure everything out by playing anyways
do yourselves a favor and just release opensource so people aren't fucking with malware infected copies of the code from a leak
I'm sorry that happened to you guys on CM, I can't imagine how it feels to have all your hard work dumped like that. I'm sure this experience will help you guys build ontop of your already existing infrastructure and great server.

In my eyes, keeping secrets only leads to bad things.
It's not encouraging experimentation, trying to "explore" most obscure things like chemistry recipes isn't fun in any way, just mindless tedium that probably won't lead to much.
And as soon as someone stumbles upon it, the word will spread around anyway. The only difference is someone can't actively go looking for the secrets.
All it does is create a group of people who knows all the secrets on the server because they're pals with one of the coders or admins, while everyone else has no chance to know most of it.
In my eyes, keeping secrets only leads to bad things.
It's not encouraging experimentation, you're not going to experiment to find the super obscure recipe for the dumb super chemicals. Maybe you'll come across it by accident, but trying to "explore" most things of that nature aren't fun in any way, just mindless tedium that probably won't lead to much. And as soon as someone does stumble upon something, the word will spread anyway.

Our secrets are 90% damage values and encounters. We don't want people looking at a gun as a "95 DPS device", we want them to look at it as a Pulse Rifle. Similarly, we have certain things which only show up once in a blue moon. We want people to feel excited when they see these things, especially if they are seeing them for the first time.
Since CM is fairly competition based, we don't want people knowing the precise values of things because we want to minimize powergaming. And we also want them to be intrigued when they discover a new firearm, or they see a new enemy.

None of that matters, like, at all though. When is the exact damage value of a pulse rifle going to come up? The only thing that matters for is knowing whether it does more or less damage than something else, something which should always be as obvious as possible. People knowing that doesn't lead to anything bad, unless you're trying to obscure the fact that some weapon deals slightly more damage than you would expect. Which again, leads to the exact same problem I outlined above.
And people are still going to be excited when they see something that's rare, because it's rare. Even if it's something they technically know exists, they've still never seen or used it before. And barely anyone will go code diving for stuff they don't know exists, anyway.

thats certainly not the case on goonstation
thats certainly not the case on goonstation
Admittedly I've been out of the loop for a few years so maybe my information is a bit out of date on this one, but last I knew this was actively enforced on Goonstation.
Like returning to the example of chemistry recipes, they actively changed them whenever too many people figured them out, while giving out lists of them to their inner circle.

Anyone can look for secrets, and admins are rarely(hell, aren't even supposed to) give out secrets, only the rare occasional clue to those who ask.
There is no "inner circle"
They're only changed/removed when they're ran into the ground

The inner circle would be the admins, the coders, and their friends.
The other things you say, well, I don't really see your point. Doesn't seem to refute anything I said.
The only purpose of game changing secrets in a multiplayer environment is lording them over those who don't know them.
