The only advantage non-hotkey mode has over hotkey mode is that you can walk while typing.
That and you don't need to manually click the chat box to do "me" commands and other useful verbs like "rest." Of course you can leave your status bar on "IC" commands so you can click the verbs but I find being able to type them faster.
In the end I think switching to WASD will be a good idea. I only used arrow keys when I started learning SS13 because either hotkey-mode wasn't in yet or I didn't think to press tab to switch to it.
I've always played with hotkeys and genuinely can't see how some people play without.
It is really not bad. You have in-game hotkeys plotted above the arrow keys and activating shift/ctrl can make clicking do very useful things like examine or pull. The only problems with arrow keys (which made me switch to WASD) is that you cannot set up comfortable macros close to the arrow key position, and you have to manually click on your intents to switch between them.
Pretty sure that this is hippie-exclusive but you can use the numpad(with numlock on) to target specific bodyparts which is really useful with ointments/bruise packs.

M is the "me" hotkey and I keep the IC tab on most of the time for quick access.

Shift/Ctrl click still works in WSAD
I found one of my favourite SS13-related images today, and wanted to repost it because it still makes me laugh every time. Pretty damn sure I saw it on an FP thread, even.

this is still the best ss13 image I've got.
One of my most recent favorite moments was watching a cargo tech set up the garbage crusher in the cargo lobby, stun people walking by, and throwing them in the crusher. He did this all very casually as no one seemed to mind/notice the crew being publicly thrown into a crusher one by one

oh really? I didn't know that, that will be useful. Thanks.

I know. I wasn't saying it doesn't work, but rather saying that arrow keys in not a terrible layout because it also has access to shift/ctrl click.
Had my first nuclear operative round on Goonstation. It was a clusterfuck, I accidentally blew up another operative by shooting a GuardBuddy with my shotgun and everyone slipped on a puddle, which meant that one of the crew grabbed a rocket launcher and killed a few of us.
At least the bomb didn't get defused.
Reminds me of the time one of the other nukies decided to test out his grenade launcher.
On our ship.
By firing at the area the nuke was stored in.
We lost that round because we didn't have a bomb and half of us were already dead by the time the admins realized and gave us a way to get it back.(IIRC, they said we had to get to a comms console and smack it with an emag, then send a message asking for a new nuke to be spawned, but the two of us who weren't dead yet had already spent all our telecrystals on other shit(iirc I gave all mine to the team console, and they were never given back, because the team leader had no idea what he was doing), so we just went on a killing spree before eventually blowing up on the bridge.)
[editline]24th September 2016[/editline]
Granted, that mess was on Hippie.
I also remember a round on Goon where I went to blow up the AI by blasting in from the north wall with a couple of C4 Charges and a few rockets. I nearly blew myself up, because I launched a rocket at the wall before it was done melting, and by the time I actually killed the AI, the rest of my team was dead, but there was an assistant who'd grabbed one of the radios. I spent the next ~10 minutes talking to her while I tried to find the syndipod that the nuke was stored in, and then I realized the asshole who put it in had locked it with a code that he didn't give to any of us, so we were fucked.
Then I just flew over to escape and chatted with people as they waited for the shuttle to arrive. Ended up jumping on the shuttle as well, myself, but someone killed me on the way to centcomm, so I blew up and took a handful of other people with me.
I'd like to make a SS13 rimworld mod with SS13 assets, stuff like animals, factions, weapons. Hit me up on Steam if anyone wants to help.

hey goofball, i saw how the colonial marines staff denied your coder app
you have no idea how much i wanted you on their development team. these circlejerk coders are so full of themselves that their obsession with "exclusivity" and "teamwork" has led to a stagnant codebase that can see a trivial marine nerf every day, but not any major feature like a new map or gameplay element in months. (the only significant gameplay element added this summer was the inclusion of the pilot officer, a boring ass job that could have been handled by the bridge officer already)
also love how they believe that their "collaboration" means they are not susceptible to broken code, but of course they had to remove 2 maps because they can't code atmos for shit

cheers bigears, I left him a comment with the stuff I worked out
to be quite honest I don't know if I want to work for them now that they 1. dodged my questioning about the non-compete clause, which makes it seem shady as fuck, and 2. claimed that short and to the point, efficient design wasn't good for "teams".

You are better off never taking to those people again, this sounds like a horrible hybrid of hugbox coding where everyone in the team has to feel "special" and thus they all get a say in any contribution, and that one idiot from corporate who keeps telling the coders what to do when he knows nothing about programming and if you tell him to fuck off he just retorts with a bunch of business buzzwords intercalated with a few technical sounding phrases but it's OK because he's full of "Synergy" and "Dynamism" and we can't use too many functions because that would be bad and expensive :)
Sorry I got a little out of control there and went into a rant... but yeah, CM is by and large a great idea with terrible everything else.

Boy you should've heard when Apop was talking about flagging YouTube videos people don't like and how he was talking about you have the right to if you host a server since it's your game when it's on your server.
So Hippiestation added vapes, a 100u tank that allows you to slowly ingest ANY chem over a period of time. They've been in /tg/station a while now and seeing as they've been ported to the evilest group of people alive fun happened.
I filled mine with super toxic formaldehyde and used it to kill myself, a ling ate my body and picked up the vape and started smoking it, he died at least once to the poisoned vape of doom.
Now heres another neato idea, if you use a anti-drop implant while holding an object it becomes cursed and undroppable, if you cut your arm off and the object drops on the floor it STAYS cursed. Fill a vape with poison, curse it, remove and attach arm and drag this vape to some poor shmuck. watch as he cannot remove the doomvape and dies ripping a fat deathcloud.

This probably means ColMAr is a bad environment to be in, and maybe goof should be glad he didnt end up with a bunch of self-entitled god complex pricks?
I'm getting back into this game, which station is best station currently?
I used to play on /tg/ a lot but if I remember it started to get shit, and hippie was really popular so I played there for a while I think.

Hippie is still hippie but the powerhunting validgamers have waned a little, you'll still get murderboned semi frequently. Goon recently got a new map but is still goon as ever.
Mandalore decided to review SS13, and did a pretty good job at it

I tried citadel station
I saw 2 wolf furry guys fucking a girl on a table
they asked if i wanted to join
