Do you guys have any tips for newcomers to the game? Whenever I try to have a go I find it very confusing.
Do you guys have any tips for newcomers to the game? Whenever I try to have a go I find it very confusing.
pick a server and read its wiki EXTENSIVELY.
I for one enjoyed the game a lot more back when I didn't know a damn thing
Do you guys have any tips for newcomers to the game? Whenever I try to have a go I find it very confusing.
Avoid jobs with real responsibility so you can learn the controls, crafting, and the mechanics. Work your way up the chain of responsibility once you've figured out a job. Always have your job's guide handy, especially when you're doing a crafting job. Don't be ashamed to hop on RP servers with extended to learn crafting jobs. Don't be ashamed to hop on that Colonial Marines server to learn combat. Jobs that have no responsibility (NO ONE would bitch at you for doing your job wrong) Assistant (Unless you're assisting in a dangerous job) Clown (Unless you cause harm) Mime (Unless you speak) Jobs that have random/situational responsibility (based on current gamemode and happenings) Chaplain (Most of the time you're just roleplaying, some of the time you actually have to deal with real threats that require your holy powers) Lawyer (Most trials never happen, and a 5-minute jail sentence is usually preferred over a 20 minute trial unless it's a major crime that usually ends in execution. You're a valuable counter against the devil in the devil gamemode) Curator (Only time you're really needed is the devil gamemode, other than that you just write dumb gay erotica) Cyborg, depending on your module Engineering Jobs, depending on what task you are trying to perform (stay away from dangerous energy sources, like the supermater crystal) Jobs that have responsibility but aren't vital to the crew's existence (jobs that only babies looking to start shit would bitch at you for not doing properly) All Service jobs (Chef, Janitor, Bartender, Botanist) All minor crafting jobs (Scientist, Roboticist) Quartermaster, Cargo Technician (unless special round) Shaft Miner Traitor AI Jobs that have lots of responsibility and are vital to the crew's existence (jobs that if you fuck up/don't do properly, people will spazz out and might get you jobbanned depending on whether or not you have shit admins) All Medical jobs All Security jobs All Leadership/Head jobs
Do you guys have any tips for newcomers to the game? Whenever I try to have a go I find it very confusing.
I'd personally recommend playing on Goonstation since they have excellent admins and they're very newbie friendly (you won't get banned for fucking up but they don't tolerate shitlers). [editline]6th September 2017[/editline] Other than that, when it doubt play as assistant.
Do you guys have any tips for newcomers to the game? Whenever I try to have a go I find it very confusing.
I actually got started in the game earlier this week after watching a majority of the videos of one of my more recent favorite YouTubers. Not the quickest way to go about things, but just watching somebody else play can help give you the sense of how to actually go about doing things. If your not afraid to fuck up publicly, the quick and dirty way is to just go assistant and go to a department that interests you, and see if somebody is willing to take on a student for the round. You'd probably want to start somewhere with not a whole lot of responsibility though, like the Robotics department. Basically try to get an apprenticeship going at one of the non-vital departments for your first couple rounds.
That's a cyborg upload console. Used to upload laws to Cyborgs. Batou selected for law changes.
How's lag on Goonstation these days? Last time I played, it was way better than it was a few years back, but combat could still jerk to a halt and then like 5 commands would issue at once, and could get you killed in a tight pinch.
Still a bit clunky, but very manageable.
cheers bud, will be sure to thank you by tracking you down ingame and toolboxing you to death in lag-free style

can you guess why tg bagil just broke and won't work anymore, no matter what the admins do? -image broke-
It's been a really, really fucking long time since the last time I was playing spessmen, but didn't there used to be a Facepunch server?
It's been a really, really fucking long time since the last time I was playing spessmen, but didn't there used to be a Facepunch server?
Aeons ago, but it's gone, Hippiestation was a psudo-Facepunch station for a while buts kinda evolved beyond facepunch.
Facepunchstation was not made by a Facepunch user if I remember right, it was just named that in the hopes that it would attract players. In its final months it attracted a staff of huge faggots and its remaining staff turned the same way. I'm pretty sure some of these people would later go to moderate Hippiestation and drive AdmiralHippie away with their dumb coup drama. Facebase and Spacepunch were the real Facepunch stations Hilariously, despite all this, it tended to attract pretty good players.

He just never expected a low rules server to get so big.
I bet that it can be hard to keep everyone happy with SS13 It's impossible to make sure everyone has fun, as generally those who know more of the ins and outs will tend to clash with those who just want to leisurely have fun

I think the big problem is that people forget that SS13, at its core, is not a sandbox game or a roleplay heavy simulator, but rather a guess the murderer game like Trouble in Terrorist Town or Cluedo, but with more farts, screaming and angry kids. Whether or not you want to play peacefully or aggressively, you are eventually going to die early, and the paranoia of that is part of the fun of the game.

There was a time where this kind of stuff was nearly impossible because greyshirts would break into chemistry and acid him to death before he could reload. A big problem I see now is that nobody seems to communicate threats anymore and seemingly few cooperate to take them down.

If there's a Detective, he's almost always doing his own shit, as opposed to actively searching for prints and finding the traitor. it doesn't help that so many people instantly fuck off into space at round start to explore and find artifacts and secrets or whatever.
How is Hippiestation doing these days anyway? I pretty much quit SS13 shortly after the hippie host change.
It actually changed twice, it went to Jamie who was one of the old atlas devs (before you get any ideas, he started SS13 and joined atlas after the debacle and had nothing to do with the drama) and as a result turned out to be a decent coder. Then after a while he gave up being "head coder" and host and basically just paid for the box. Then Doobie started paying for the box and Jamie is headcoder. Playbase wise its pretty similar, there are less powergamers now and the ones that do are basically supermarket own brand Camillie Driggers and Cappy respectivly. John Mclaime is still around and he has actually started foraying into gimmicks as opposed to murderboning, abliet in a murderboney kinda way. His last gimmick was to steal the captain rapier and cut off everyones left arm (or beat you into crit if RNG didn't work out). The playerbase got a little smaller due to people thinking hippie shut down when Hippie himself left, and what with Hippie, and you as well, not making as many vidyas we just don't have the same public presence that we used to. Jamie did help set up a system that lets up keep up to date with tg so we're never behind on features, it means we never have to do another rebase which is nice but it ALSO means that coding for hippie is less straightforward these days as we have to make all out changes as modular as possible so as to avoid conflicts. It does mean we have to port their balance changes then undo them.
