God damn this looks really creepy now, I'm loving it.

Man those goons running around gave me the creeps. Love it!

I bet the first person view would be creepy as hell. Great work by the way.
Thanks a lot guys! Feels reassuring that the creepiness is coming across well enough. First person view should boost those feelings even more .
I just figured it'd also give the player more to do when they're completely stuck, instead of just waiting there to die.
Yeah, hopefully I understand what you mean. I thought it would be nice to have different behaviors depending on the situation. Like if the goons manage to make you be stuck with no option to escape, pushing you against a building for example, they would just get out of their car very slowly, one could light up a cigarette while the second goon would take a big sip of vodka and the third one would approach the player car while laughing demonically, position himself, and start humping vigorously the car from behind. Then they would approach your driver window, break it with a hammer ... and no need to show the rest. Some sort of psycho-terror like that. Ideally different every time.
But yeah, even that might get boring in the long run, so enabling to skip the whole thing might be an option too. Personally, I do get fed up with all the time-consuming stuff in racing games, when you want to restart a race, for example, and you're forced to re-watch the same cutcene every time and wait for the 3,2,1 go thing and just feel like: please, just get on with it, I don't want to endure that same procedure for the 500th time again..
Great progress on the animations by the way, looking better and better. Any plans to have them try and clamber onto your hood/roof? Would be pretty intense to drive away with one of the goonies still attached to the vehicle. :v:
Thank you . Yes that behavior is planned, it should definitely enhance the fear.
All in all, the goal would be that the player tries to avoid those close-encounter situations in the first place, and rather try to escape from the goons. I wouldn't like the player to want to get caught on purpose, just to be able to watch some cool weird death scene... Which brings us to what do you lose, in terms of inventory, upgrades, and progression, when you die?
Ok then, I won't refrain from posting not so spectacular stuff anymore :buckteeth:

Thanks a lot for your feedback  About the guns, what you're suggesting would add a last chance option to the game, that could actually enhance the thrill. Though if the goons catch you, they would be in possession of the shotgun the next time you encounter them... I'll try to figure out a way to amplify the terror through more suggestive means.
Here's some recent progress on the on-foot behavior. Slightly better than the "Danny de Vitos" on page 2 - but still too cartoony for my taste:

Much better indeed, but doesn't it feels like they step too quickly? Not sure if it's just me, but it looks almost like they are being watched through speeded up video.

Yeah, they're too quick, especially when they're running around in the mud. Also the 12.5fps Gif makes it look faster than in-game at 60fps.
An article about the game project has been published : https://killscreen.com/articles/driving-game-inspired-creators-real-life-escape-soviet-union/
Also started doing some in-engine concept art...

This is just 100% amazing, the lets-players will FLOCK to it. Seeing the thug's headlights appear in the rear view mirror really gave me a chill.
Wouldn't be a bad way to get some attention too, once you get something playable, send an "exclusive press demo" to some of them famous Let's Players and you'll be able to reach a pretty large audience.

Thanks! - sounds like a good plan. Any opinions/suggestions on good Let's Players?

I'll be keeping a very close eye on this.

Does drifting seem a bit easy, or is that just your skill?
Just noticed this thread, and I must say I really love how cool the rainy/wet feel is done.

With keyboard controls, there's steering assistance enabled (sort of an automatic counter-steering). I'm using this middleware for the car physics: http://www.carx-tech.com/ - they have a demo and iOS & Android apps that showcase the physics.
Also, been playing driving games for over 20 years = some skill involved :)

Thanks! Yeah it took quite some time and experimenting to get that wet feel.
Also started redesigning the cars. I'm aiming for a distinct look for the game. Hopefully, fans of the original designs won't be disappointed.

Here's a quick test:

Oh man yes please
That looks absolutely perfect!
I know it's hardly the focus of the game, but holy shit the motion blur on the wet roads looks amazing. When you drive under a street light and you see the browny orangey reflection getting smeared it looks real.
Also, that atmosphere is incredible with the dark interior. I didn't even notice the chasing AI on the first watch.

Thanks a lot! Maybe I'm wrong but it does seem people are far more impressed by the first-person view perspective. The only problem is that it makes d-fens much harder, because you can't really accurately anticipate and react to the goons stopping maneuvers. VR and thus being able to look over your shoulder could help, or I'd need to alter the way the rear-view mirrors behave.
Concerning the motion-blur, Unity just released new post effects so I'm using those now. They're quite a step forward.
Time for some news : An experienced programmer has recently joined my one-man band! This will definitely speed-up progression towards a playable tech demo (and I can now write in "we" form, which sounds so much more professional ).
Also, the project started getting increasing attention from the media which is a huge help for spreading the word.
That's awesome, I'm stoked for you!
As for the issue with defending the vehicle in first person, you could add a little "radar" to one corner of the screen to simulate situational awareness
Something like this:

You could put it on the top right so you still feel like you're glancing at the rear view mirror

Just don't become a sellout and remember to sometimes hit your facepunch pals up with some great content

Thank you  Could work with the radar, will have to test further. For now I made changes to the rear-view mirrors and IMHO it's better:

Oh my god it looks so good
It's like My Summer Car Halloween edition
Better luck this time...

Can you run them over?
Not yet, but it's a planned feature. Should you try to kill them, you'll be confronted with much more aggression from that gang.
The mood in this game is so strong I love it
Last one of this trilogy - got a bit nervous there :scream:

Oh man, the way the lighting plays off the droplets on the windows
If you showed these gifs to a larger audience, you'd probably generate tons of hype
so be careful with that, or people may end up with unrealistic expectations :)
The vibe is created so perfectly what the hell
So what is this, a car-themed horror game? I dig it.
RPS did a story on it:
