The Elder Scrolls Megathread XX: Might as well be XXX

I think they need to get rid of using moonstone, quicksilver, corrundumn and machalite for weapons and armour, and pretend they never happened.
Always thought it would have added a lot of depth to gear if there was a style/material system, i.e. you could make weapons in any given design (nordic, elven, etc) using any ore you have. So you could have Iron Orcish armor, Ebony Elven, Malachite Dwarven, etc with each respective variety having different abilities or bonuses
also the idea of Nordic armor being made with moonstone makes me giggle
Khajiit likes the taste of your armor

Why exactly ?
You better not say "it's unrealistic!!!" after all that time you spent arguing about how iron should hurt fairies
Faeries et al being weak to iron's a fucking staple, and it was an anecdote in a wider argument.
Corundum, IRL a very hard crystal primarily made of aluminium oxide, , being melted into ingots and then put into iron to make steel, is a weird fucking choice. But there's no books on why it's used or saying it's not the same thing (consequently, there were books explaining ebony and glass being not the same thing). It's a similar story with moonstone and Machalite, only those materials are weak, quicksilver's a name for mercury, a liquid.
Not to mention you can still find jewelry using the materials as gemstones, as IRL,
Ebony is a type of wood, not a volcanic metal that is supposedly the life-blood of Lorhkan.
TES has always been weird with armor and weapons being made out of seemingly random materials but this is a fantasy game we're talking about. I can understand wanting some realism when it comes to stuff like that but stuff like that has been a staple of TES for so long that changing it to something normal would be a little weird.
There's literally an ingame book that says glass isn't glass it's just named as such for it's resemblance, and ebony's a type of porn.

What if ur the one assuming ???? Who is to say what gender ... what culture we are...
I might very well be a bag of trash irl
Is there anyone who models here for Skyrim? if so what app would you recommend? I'm looking at Maya and 3DS Max 2017 right now since they're the only ones I see with plugins for LE.
3DS is the staple and go-to but using Maya and converting to obj and then .nif/.strip works just as well.

I agree, and would also like to add that trying to use blender for Skyrim and FO4 is a pain in the ass and I recommend nobody try to go through the weird rigamarole of trying to find the right blender versions and the right blender plugins.

Great, I'll try that out. Do you know if the student version is ok? I would not want to perform illegal activities

Yep. Have to keep in mind I've been trying to start my 3D modelling adventures for Skyrim since late 2015. I try out an install for a bit, give up and then try again much later, this being my latest attempt. I still have Python versions and script compilers leftover in my PC from my Blender attempts.

There's Minecraft mods that do this sort of thing and it brings a lot to the table. I find a lot more attachment to my weapon when I had to research what items do what and make each different part of my weapon before combining them all together to make my ideal weapon and tool.

Student version should work with the plugins. Here's a link to em for Oldrim. Here's the one I use for FO4. And here's one for SSE.
Not sure if that last one is compatible with FO4 or should be treated as the most up to date or currently used one. There just seems to be either 2 or more people working on different forks. But I do think the SSE one may be forked off of the FO4 one.
And I'm not sure about the FO4 one, as that used to be on the nexus, but it's gone now. Making models for these games is a mess. :/
I haven't modded Oblivion in literally a decade, everyone keeps recommending me the Bevilex Modlist but I give 0 fucks about shit like texture resolution.
Are there like, modlists for just gameplay enhancements (alternative start, survival, etc.) or world building related stuff? Are the Unique Landscapes, Better Cities, Settlements of Cyrodiil, and the HESU Mod Collection all compatible? What are MOO, OOO, and FCOM and can I just use all of them?

Pretty much what I was looking for when I bought it in the last Steam sale, it's really hard to find good mods for Oblivion that aren't the big (and imo overrated) name mods, which are mostly just graphic mods like the character overhaul which I still think looks like shit personally.

I'm just going in slow and trying to fill it up with stuff to flesh things out for a new experience since I haven't played Oblivion since 2008 or so. Stuff like Living Economy and such; almost impossible to find a list of gameplay related stuff.

This is a game where you fight dragons by shouting at them... And the realism of the materials is your concern?

Oh jesus, we've got a live one.

Care to elaborate?
I think he's reffering to that one time someone critized fallout 4s's loot system not being realistically lore friendly to Pete Hines and Hines replied with something along the lines of "Yeah because a world with radiation zombies and giant bugs has to be realistic"
Anyone who does the whole "realism in fantasy, preposterous!" shtick. I get that you might disagree with me, but you might as well be saying "ha nothing matters cause there's dragons that talk, your requests for castles to have walls are just stupid"

Then say that instead of making a dumb snide comment lmfao
There is a difference between in-world logic and in-game logic, but you have to realize they have to intersect sometimes to allow for a playable game. If Skyrim was 100% realistic it'd be a massive pain in the ass.
i require all my games to have dwarf fortress levels of simulation before the game is believable
I guess ignorance is bliss because I like the different weird materials and I don't know shit about real life materials, physics or chemistry.

If it was that realistic, then all the Elves would be dead and you'd find their bones near every lava pit.
If it was that realistic, then all the Elves would be dead and you'd find their bones near every lava pit.
Sounds good to me.

I'm not seeing a downside.

You're right. This is most upsetting.
