Sure, how do I join
:v:
Bit late on that response, Scorpious, but I have no excuse in being even later with mine!
I have finished yet another turn page on the Wikia, this time on The End of History! Since it is still active, it'll receive continuous updates for sure!
I'm currently considering my options for the next turn page, though it would be nutty if I didn't select one soon!
If my allusion didn't reveal it, then this post will - I will be working on the Disunited States of America next! While the RP after that is still being debated, Twilight of the Eagle is on the list as well!
I'll also take this time to point out that there is a character slot open for Murder at Midnight!
May want to name it "Disunited States of America 1790" just to differentiate from the other DSA rps perhaps?
May want to name it "Disunited States of America 1790" just to differentiate from the other DSA rps perhaps?
Unnecessary, the first two are just "Disunited States" while the third is "The Disunited States".

In the year 2015, the city of Boldwood was a prospering place. A major population center for everyone around. An average joe and jane could live in the suburbs and work a decent job here. Kids played in the parks and had a good time. Even crime was pretty low in the big parts of town. It was almost like things were shaping up to be great. But, things went wrong. The dead walked among us.
Features
* Survive in the city of Boldwood where the dead rise.
* Distribute points into five attributes
* There are various ways to deal with the situation, whether you barricade your home or escape the city
* Fend for yourself or stick with a group
* Combat is more riskier with an inventory and infection system

So we're steadily approaching the long-awaited conclusion of Starpath II. Chapter 4 will be completed before the end of September at our current rate, and the Chapter 5 Finale will be probably run its course before Thanksgiving, with all my planned epilogue material being out by Christmas. That's my plan, at least.
I previously teased a haunted house RP concept in the Discord a month or two ago, but my enthusiasm for running another RP project, even one that's only a fraction of the scale of Starpath II, has declined significantly since I pitched the idea. I'm not saying that I won't ever GM again, but I will comment that I'm at a unique point in my life where certain opportunities are available to me, and might not be in the future.
Simply put, I want to write novels set in the Starpath universe, using elements of the existing two storylines. I don't mean simply rehashing the RPs in another format, either, but rather reinventing them from the ground up. I want to take the very best of my work and refine it as best I can, taking these patched-together stories we've made to create a seamless cloth out of them. I want to get published, and I want to launch a Patreon account to accompany the effort. Here's where things get hairy.
Starpath has always been a collaboration. Lots of people have come and gone, adding major and minor elements that have contributed all sorts of gritty details and nuances which have made the setting unique from other sci-fi settings. And I'm scared that even if the version of this setting in my novel is changed significantly, that somebody, or more than one person, will demand co-credit or take legal action against me. I don't know how to address this fear. I don't know how to protect myself or if it's even worth trying to protect myself. Does anyone have advice?
I guess I would start asking anyone who took part in Starpath if you can use their characters or stories they wrote. I myself am quite interested in seeing mine and other characters portrayed by someone else. Even though I haven't interacted with Starpath in a long long time, I'm not seeing a reason to take legal action. Seems really vain and petty in my eyes, but of course I can't speak for everyone.
I don't have ANY experience with this so my advice could be completely null, but hey it looks like you really care about this and I don't want to just rate informative then forget about it tomorrow.
Personal view on Starpath has always been it being sorta open source for people. As in, as long as you participated in the thread and it didnt clash too much, you could add to it. I'm in the same boat as Otterman in this case when it comes to the legal action aswell. I dont see a need for that.
I have zero experience with the rest sadly, so cant offer much currently.
I'm perfectly fine with anything and everything I've made being used/changed/tweaked/etc. I'm just excited to see what comes of it.
I will be honest when I say that I don't really expect anything anyone, if they decide to make a work derivative of the material produced in Starpath, to use what I've introduced in the universe. If anything I specifically created got used, and I mean specifically like any characters I wrote, at most I would just want acknowledgment, and at least I would want to be informed. It's not worth going to court over, like everyone else has said.
And besides, we've had so much inactive stuff written that it could easily be replaced, like all those who wrote a couple posts (or at worst no posts after their initial one, or even none completely), and since it would be a derivative work that could in essence be classified as a reworking of a non-intellectual property (especially with any explicit references to other media removed), would there be any basis for a lawsuit? I personally don't think so. And since Starpath has always been open source as Kiler said, and since you'd very much want to streamline your version of the story, whatever you would probably use that was made by someone else could probably just be settled in a conversation that either results in them permitting the use of whatever they wrote, ala everyone above, or them asking you to remove it and replace it with something else, which allows you to get more creative, though for some reason I doubt something like that would happen.
I appreciate the replies. I'm sorry I haven't been available today since I'm out of town currently, but I'll be home tomorrow evening and will contact you guys personally about it. Damian's approach makes good sense to me, wherein I can provide everyone early access to the novel material to make sure that if there are any objections, they can be sorted out ahead of time.
The reason I'm so sketched out about this project is that I was in a similar situation a few years ago; I had a collaboration with another user on Facepunch that started out as a hobby, and we worked harmoniously as friends for a long time until the exact moment that we sensed moneymaking potential. At that point, he turned on me, publicly mocking and downplaying my involvement while privately doing everything in his power to force me out. In the end, he was able to strip my share of ownership out from under me using the threat of ending the project entirely, and I backed down out of concerns for the fans of our work. Having won his petty victory, he then dropped off the face of the planet, and left the project to rot abandoned.
My worry is that, as long as this thing just a pipe dream, no one will mind if I borrow a few ideas or plot elements, but once it gets closer to something real that might actually make a few thousand dollars (if I'm very, very lucky), that same someone will swoop in looking for their share. I know this isn't a silly concern because it's very literally happened to me before. It ruins friendships and stifles whatever creative spark that might have been available for the work... So I'm going to try my best to work with you all to ensure that there are no misunderstandings.
Last night I was rummaging through laws online til I contacted an attorney online named Roy Hadavi. I looked him up and background is connected and is legitimate. I asked a few questions regarding Starpath.
Right, so if I made an original work with multiple people. I contribute and they contribute. Would that be a joint authorship? JA: What written documentation do you have? Customer: It is an internet roleplaying game. A thread where each person posts in and contributes. JA: Have you talked to a localattorney? Has anything been filed in court? Customer: No. JA: Anything else you want the lawyer to know before I connect you? Customer: Nothing else.
Roy: Hi. My name is Roy and I am a licensed attorney. I would be happy to provide assistance. Also, please keep in mind that our conversation does not include an attorney-client relationship and this is for general information purposes only.
Roy: What you are describing would be considered a joint-authorship under copyright law.
So basically what I wanted to know if each person who contributes in the internet roleplaying game, would that mean it's a joint work.
Roy: Correct. And each individual would be consider one of the joint authors.
And if one joint author were to publish another work for commercial reasons. Is another joint author entitled to share royalties?
Roy: Yes. All the joint authors are each entitled to an equal share. In fact, any one of the authors that profits from the work, must provide an accounting to the other authors.
Last one. What would one do to settle who owns what in the game. Would we have to draft a collaborative agreement?
Roy: That would be very beneficial to everyone. It would lay out everyone's rights and responsibilities. Otherwise, it would be considered evenly owned by all the authors, without anyone have a claim to any specific party.
My personal advice is to just speak with the people who contributed to the universe and go from there.
From the sounds of things, the best approach would be to wait until I have a more concrete idea of exactly what I'll need to include in the novel, and what I'll be creating from scratch. Any borrowed elements should be cataloged in order to get a list of co-authors, and then a written agreement can be reached with those co-authors. I already know that I'll have to make terms with Doomevil, Deathgrunt, Viper, Kiler, Radley, Damian, and Infab, based on this logic, but others may or may not be necessary if I completely avoid referencing their work in the novel.
I'm working on a Discord server for this project akin to the one Doomevil created for CI. I'll distribute the link privately through Discord DM.

Started fleshing out an ideal for a Nation RP, Astro-Galealia: Star lords is a Nation RP set in space with Feudalism and Mecha galore.
Here's the drafts I've got done so far for the map and Realm status example along with some lore which is subject to change.

Mechanically, I have a system in the early stages of development so I'll try to explain it as best I can here, don't expect it will go without any revisions either minor or major from here till the time I launch the RP.
Alright, so you got 8 stats (Might, Order, Wealth, Influence, Technology) that range from 1-8 and your Realm ( Player Nation ) gets 20 points starting out. They are used when making a action which is done through a dice roll (A 10 sided dice), the higher stat, the better the odds's as it adds bonus to your dice' final result. Likewise, They are also used to resist another Realm action to harm you as the number needed for the dice roll to succeed is both decided by the GM and also the opposing stat of that which it is tested against.
(I.E Realm A orders the assassination of one of Realm B's leading generals. Realm A uses his Influence stat which is at a 6 (+2) so while the number required for the action would be at a 7 normally (due to the fact that this high asset target) this number is further raised to a 8 due to the Realm B's order stat being at a 5(+1). The dice is then rolled by the GM and the natural result of the dice is an 5 which is then furthered to a 7 due to the Nation A's Influence stats bonus. So the final result is then a close failure so while the assassin fails to kill or even wound his target, the assassin is able to escape without detection. Meaning that while Realm A's action failed, it does means Realm B will never know if any attempt on general's life was ever carried out.)
Might represents your Realm's military power and effects your efforts in all fields of direct warfare. Though, it will decrease if you forces experience a major loss.
Order represents your Realm's overall stability and security, so having a high one allows your king and/or queen sleep soundly at night as it reduces the chance of a enemy assassination or an peasant revolt.
Think of it like your health bar as it may lower if your wealth or might go too low.
Wealth represents the amount your Realm has in it's treasury, this stat, while not used to make any rolls, needs to be equal to support all others stats as they will be unable to raised any further than your Wealth rating.
It can also be consumed to instead make a dice roll in a attempt to rise another stat.
Influence represents how well your Realm can persuade or even manipulate others along with how well your agents preform in regards to espionage operations. Nevertheless, it is use to reduce any of your rival Realm's stats either politically or secretly.
The required result depends on level of opposing stat you are trying to lower.
Technology simply represents your Realm's global technology level, mechanically, it may be used to make a chance to rise any other stats depending on the number of the Technology stat.
It is also needed to be at least one level bellow your Might for your Might stat to rise any higher.
Each Realm starts out with a single planet of their choosing, this will be declared as your Realm's Homeworld, losing this planet will cut your stats drastically, losing all planets will destroy your faction and you will lose the game. If a planet is not taken during the beginning of game, it will be declared as a 'indie' and may be either taken by a new player or conquered by an existing realm, they will be rewarded with 5 extra stat points over the course of the next 5 turns. Though conquering an indie planet requires high stats in more than one stat and several continuous action for a number of turns. Losing a non-Homeworld planet will reduce your stats by 3 over the course of three turns.
While most of this is, again, subject to change. I hope that the final system will make this a fast, easy to learn system with quite the amount of choice and depth that will hopefully make the game really fun and interesting for all.

It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.
In 858.M41, with wars and the need for explorers, Rogue Traders comprised of several ships entitled The Colossus have answered to the Imperium. With the Warrant of Trade, the borders of space are limitless. In the Constante Sector lays a war between the Imperium and Chaos and other factions aiming to take their territory by storm. The Imperium's main planet in the sector, Mos Pryas is a template world that is developing to be a fine resource to the Empire.

Got A New ORder mod working again

While you all may be familiar with my work on the FPRP Wikia and its affiliates, some of you may not be as aware of my work over on Wikipunch! Ever since registration was re-opened back in November, I've been a semi-regular contributor there, helping efforts.
So, over the last month or so, I was "working" on a draft for an article there, on the wider forum roleplaying community! Or, at least, "wider" referring to the ones I'm aware of on this forum. With some help, some research, and utilizing what I've heard over the years, I cracked out this baby just before the New Year!
The page is still incredibly work in progress, but it's a good base to start from! I really feel it's important to remember the stories of communities formed, especially now. If anyone reading this knows anything that could possibly contribute to the page, like more info on the pre-2009 era, info on 2009-2011 era RPWL, or just generally info on the subcommunities (sans FPRP and GMod), please send me a PM!
Do you guys think that 99% of the chat about the RPs going on or potential RPs going to happen being on discord now sort of hides the community from the rest of Facepunch, thus making it more difficult for more and new players to find it?
Moved to General Games Discussion as this seems appropriate. Thanks to EuSKalduna on Discord for bringing this to my attention
Actual RP games must remain in Games in Progress though
Now I'm wondering why none of us thought to tell you about it sooner :v:
That's why I am the discord owner. I am the smart
That's why I am the discord owner. I am the smart
Just because you were the one to actually make a server doesn't make you smart! The real smarty is whoever suggested the character RPers join the server, since otherwise we probably wouldn't have seen the spike in activity that they brought, which triggered the domino effect of everyone in the group using it!
Now I'm wondering why none of us thought to tell you about it sooner :v:
Well, Fast Threads has traditionally been our homebase, so it only made sense for the General Chat thread to remain there. Though I suppose that Skalduna was right in saying that it just didn't receive as much traffic as it used to. I'm just hoping the thread doesn't disappear in the waves of GGD, with how infrequently we use it!
I'll go ahead and update the OP then.
I am the smart now.
Zilla's Poorly Written Guide To Editing Maps In A Jiffy Using Paint.Net
Hey Everyone! Today, I'm going to show you guys a quick and (relatively) easy way to edit maps using Paint.Net. For today's lesson, we're going to make a strong independent Texas who don't need no union.

Step 1. - Get your image. That's fairly simple in and of itself, and the wiki has an assload of resources in regards to maps.

Step 2. - Get your tools ready. Notice something important! In the second image, I have ensured that Anti-Aliasing is OFF for all of my tools. AA will cause "fluffy" lines that are not only messy, but a major hassle to deal with when editing maps regularly. Another thing to notice is the incredibly low tolerance. Low tolerance isn't just something to use so you can feel like a real sneering imperialist, it also prevents you from selecting a huge number of "similar" colors at once.

Step 3. - Select your region. It's best to have a "canvas" to work with. It leads to less risk as opposed to just editing with all parts of the map open to changes. If you want, you can even cut and paste the selection into a new file to work with, just make sure to match the parts back up when you're done.

Step 4. - Begin "Blocking". "Blocking" is when you use black (the commonly used color) to set up a new international border. Note that all borders leading up to the one you defined have a "block", even ones from inside the territories you want to change. This is crucial! If you don't keep an eye on them, you can have these results

Step 5. - Use Magic Select. Make sure that you have the tolerance on very low! Left click on a region to select it with the Magic Select. Holding down the control key allows you to make multiple selections at once (seen in the third image). Using shift will select ALL colors similar to the one you want. Using shift is useful when selecting a large nation, such as the UK or Russia, but is not needed in this example.

Step 6. - Color it in. This is entirely up to you on how you want to color the region. Make sure that its colors are not too similar to neighbors or other countries. When doing the internal borders, I take the province color and reduce the Value (V in HSV on the color wheel) by 10 or 15 (more if the starting color is bright). If blocked properly, the internal borders will fill.
And with that, you're done! After a quick check over the rest of the map, making sure that you haven't edited something you didn't want to, save the file as a .png. PNGs allow for transparency, and tend not to become artifacted. This may lead to large file sizes, but most maps don't get to anything silly.
An addendum to the above, since I've been asked about this technique in the past:
Denoting Occupation on Maps in Paint.net
