it depresses me how much better tf2s lore, characters, and writing is ingame [editline]6th June 2017[/editline] I think roadhog is the only well written character in the game and that's just bcu he's an asshole -- even more than reaper
The omnic crisis backstory is like the only semi-interesting thing I find in this game, but it's a shame that all the heroes are absolutely bland as fuck.

He's not a villain, a hero or some NPC. He's also one of the few heroes that isn't a part of a network. Wouldn't say he's the only character with decent writing, but I guess that's subjective.
Except only Pyro and Soldier truly have mental issues.
You'd have to have some form of severe mental issue if you came out of Boston so the scout counts too.
I don't think it's the Disney coating and non-gore/swearing that does Overwatch in. It's just the campy, bland optimistic vibe and totally detached/aimless gameplay vs. backstory. Why is Overwatch fighting Overwatch? Why do we care about moving a cart? What's so poignant about capturing a circle in the middle of some far-flung city? Why are Reaper and Widowmaker working happily beside Winston and Tracer? Why would the characters care? Why can there be two of them and how do they respawn? These style of questions Team Fortress 2 could answer. Might've been lazy or kind of stretched (cloned mercs fighting behest of super corps family rivalry iirc) and it took years for Valve to flesh it all out nicely, but in Overwatch it's just "*shrug* it's a video game?" The comics are a bit of a nice touch, but I really don't think Blizzard is ever going to write themselves out of this and the voice lines add so little, for what few there are: Mei @ Reaper: "ur just a big bully >:(" Reaper: *edgy laugh* The shame here is the foundational designs of the characters are (mostly) interesting enough. You could really fluff them out if you had to - like the Genji/Zenny mentorship.
If you let your Zenyatta die after running off to kill some other fuck while he gets chased down by the three flankers on the enemy team then you deserve to lose the game. Seriously, why are my teammates so fucking braindead?
These style of questions Team Fortress 2 could answer. Might've been lazy or kind of stretched (cloned mercs fighting behest of super corps family rivalry iirc)
Actually, the Comic implies that each team of mercs is unique, so it all makes even more sense lore-wise.
This is between characters who should by rights hate each other, don't get me started on the endless stream of "Wow [hero's name] you're great!" "Wow [other hero's name] you're great too!". There are a few choice pieces of decent banter. But overall the writing is weak as fuck, largely because Blizzard don't have the balls to have heroes say anything mean, or generally emote any kind of real disdain for characters that should be their sworn enemies.

This compared to tf2's banter is damned depressing
I think a really important distinction we should be making here is that the Overwatch voice lines we're discussing are between team mates at the beginning of a round, while the TF2 lines being used as examples are from killing an enemy player five times in a row. Very different contexts. [editline]6th June 2017[/editline] Obviously what Overwatch needs is character interactions on kill/kill streak
I think a really important distinction we should be making here is that the Overwatch voice lines we're discussing are between team mates at the beginning of a round, which the TF2 lines being used as examples are from killing an enemy player five times in a row. Very different contexts.
It's hard to get into it when Blizzard went for a generic route and specific character interactions are only with pre-match banter, usually. I recall a few more, but it's typically like a single line (Junkrat elimination vs. Reaper or Roadhog for example.) You can really see the tone Blizzard wanted to take with this game and positivity considering there's not a single fucking "negative" voice command.
There's also character interactions in TF2 for standing on the point/cart, using an engie's teleporter, getting ubercharged, specific scenarios (crit-a-cola running out, scout says "aw crap", sniper lining up a head-shot, he mutters things, etc), map-specific voice lines (mostly the halloween ones), killing specific classes as another class (soldier vs demo), I can go on. TF2 feels a lot more alive than Overwatch does.
Obviously what Overwatch needs is character interactions on kill/kill streak
Nothing will ever beat "Hey look, he shape shifted into a dead guy!"
So all Blizzard needs to do is give the game more life.
TF2 [...] lots of gore.
Oh boy, let me show you the wonderful german version of TF2 introducing the "Are these gibs from a teammate? And from what class are they?" effect which also comes with the "Is that yellow blood and rubber ducky gibs?" bullshit pack
Obviously what Overwatch needs is character interactions on kill/kill streak
and most of them do actually in terms of kill. Although it's just for the specific hero.
Went down by almost 200 from my last seasons final score of 2537, won 6/10 placements. It keeps putting me lower and lower. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I play with 1700SR level friends all the time.

Which is dumb because both sides basically ISIS the fuck out of said artifacts and dig site, and then go a bit further by wrecking a tourist town
My biggest gripe with Overwatch's characters is that they obviously tried to appeal to as many demographics as possible when it comes to their personality, sometimes in ways as subtle as a freight train. You honestly cannot convince me that the word "waifu" was not once uttered while designing any of the female characters, or "Team Fortress" while trying to nail Junkrat and Roadhog's personalities. The overall problem is that when you need to appeal to as many demographics as possible, the end result will be rather bland. Everything has to be mellowed down, because if everyone is toned 'up' , it would be a complete mess. Just try to imagine a full-on edge Reaper together with a cutesy D.va and an insane Junkrat. (Honestly the only way that could work is if you don't take the characters at face value, and just make them sort of parodies of certain game characters/ players clichés. And even then you're already aiming for a specific tone.) They're all there to attract people with different tastes. Now that I think about it, it's sort of the same as with the Star Wars prequels (which RedLetterMedia briefly touched upon in their reviews of those movies). I'm not saying the characters are prequel levels, but the same problem is there for Overwatch's cast, albeit to a lesser extent as in the Star Wars prequels these differences clash and overall bring the work down (like with the Reaper, Dva and Junkrat example). Overwatch also has the major pro over those movies in the fact that it's a video game and the gameplay (usually) comes before the characterization. [sp]I started writing this before some posts here were already made, but went to do something else in the meantime and I didn't want to thrash all of this.[/sp] :frown:
Not to cut in but I really wanna share this clip. I haven't slept in a little over 24 hours and hopped into a match of quick play because my body won't shut down for some reason. I'm pretty sure I got carried as everything is a blur but [sp]I literally kicked a charging Reinhardt to death so like, this is a 10/10 game to me.[/sp]
You honestly cannot convince me that the word "waifu" was not once uttered while designing any of the female characters, or "Team Fortress" while trying to nail Junkrat and Roadhog's personalities.
Junkrat will never be as charming as our beloved black Scottish cyclops who's simultaneously drunk and a demolitions expert.
"Team Fortress" while trying to nail Junkrat personality.
No, I'm pretty sure "Mad Max Joker" came up for that one.
I'm fine with the overwatch characters, setting and dialogue (most of the time). No idea where all this sudden hate came from
Speaking of the story and characters and such, has anyone ever noticed the pricing of stuff in the Hollywood attack spawn? I can't tell if it's a commentary on stuff being super expensive in Los Angeles, or if there's just this unspoken economic crisis happening in the world.
I'm fine with the overwatch characters, setting and dialogue (most of the time). No idea where all this sudden hate came from
Honestly they are what they are. I think the world and its technologies are neat, and the cast is surprisingly varied, but at the end of the day I just like playing the game.
You guys are overselling TF2's characters tbh. They're nothing great or special or as in depth as you folk are making them out to be.
You guys are overselling TF2's characters tbh. They're nothing great or special or as in depth as you folk are making them out to be.
not much of a counter argument
The issue is that they try to market it to appeal to a lower common denominator and to get a specific age rating. They went full disney on this. For example, there is no gibs, bloodshed, or any form of gore, and no swearing in the voice over.
I legitimately was surprised to hear Mcree saying "Damnit" whenever he gets discorded. It was probably the only swear i've heard in this game coming from the characters, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the ONLY swear in the game EDIT: Also Tracer saying "ARSE" during one of her skins, but those are seriously the only two cases that I know of

They're clearly afraid of over-stereotyping certain countries or ethnicities and stirring up anger, which is why certain characters seem very bland compared to others. Pharah versus McCree is the best example. They both have the "I am justice incarnate" angle, but McCree delves far deeper into his given quirk and is a walking stereoype of his homeland, while Pharah just sorta... Exists, and parrots the same few token things at length to establish herself, without even acknowledging her geographic origins in anything other than her name and that face tattoo. I'm aware of her backstory, but they still didn't commit even half as hard as they did with McCree, and it really shows.
