No it isn't reality, it's arbitrary. And they're not free. People paid for the game in anticipation of updates. If they sold it with the phrase "This is the game. There will be no future updates or patches, this is it." The game's sales would have died.
The game did get free updates though? They've added regular-rotation emotes and stuff, 3 new heroes, 4 new maps. A new gamemode, server browser, events, etc.. Really not bad for a game that isn't even a year old yet
They weren't free. I paid $40. They added a gambling system. That was the cost of those updates.
They were updates accessible to players who paid nothing past the base price of the game, there.
I have a feeling we are not on the same page here.
I'd be okay with it all if it was possible to get all the Event items for free through just in game play. But since its all time locked and there's no way to get them outside of RNG crates, instead its "you might get 1-2 event skins, hope you like the ones you get otherwise tough shit" and that's it. No trading, no outside event gold coin purchases, nothing.
I would never advise anyone to buy a game expecting updates to it. That being said, gating of content like OW is doing with this update is very frustrating because they have throw a now arbitrary restriction to content. I'm fine with holiday restrictions like we've had but their ratio of permanent content to restricted is getting ridiculous. This was a prime opportunity to even it out. Side note: I know I said you shouldn't expect updates when buying a game and it sounds hypocritical complaining about gating that content. By adding that content, Blizzard is also including in the base game price. If they hault free content now I can't really complain.
IMO this whole craze that modern gaming has to put in microtransactions in order to "fund" future events, maps, characters is garbage. I was on board initially but every day I'm slowly wanting to go back to buying map packs separately with all the "new skins" included
Games have changed. Online, competitive games like Overwatch? Find me a successful one that doesn't have frequent updates. They have to have updates, or they die.
The problem is that people now expect more for the same price. If you want more content in a base game you can't not expect some way of making that possible. That is probably why TF2 went F2P and why OW has loot boxes. [editline]27th April 2017[/editline]
IMO this whole craze that modern gaming has to put in microtransactions in order to "fund" future events, maps, characters is garbage.
Expansion packs alienate players. You cannot afford that in an online, competitive game like Overwatch. I believe Battlefield 1 has that issue with their latest pack.
The difference between expansions and packs is that when you play a game with packs you get booted from a server because they swap to a map you can't play or you face people with weapons (potentially better) that you can't even obtain. With expansions, all players playing are on the same level and don't have to worry about those elements. It is also an opportunity to improve anything about the game.
Why can't we unlock skins by unlocking achievements or getting to certain levels [editline]27th April 2017[/editline] like defeating PvE on legendary should just give you the skin of the hero you're playing as imo 'cause that shit is bonkers if you can beat it 4 times then i think you deserve the skins
Expansion packs split the community. Would rather have locked events then a community that is split up.
I have a feeling we are not on the same page here.
Those updates were advertised as part of what you're buying if you pay $40 to buy the original game. Would you have bought overwatch for $40 if you knew that they would never update it? If you answered no, then part of that $40 value is based on the knowledge that you would be receiving future updates. Which means you paid for those updates with the original $40. If they said that they will be updating the game in the future, you bought the game, and then they never updated it, then I'd be outraged. Because I paid for those updates, and never would have paid $40 for the game if I wasn't going to get them. So no, I don't buy the argument that Blizzard is giving us free content and we should shut up. I already paid for that content when I bought the game.
Expansion packs split the community. Would rather have locked events then a community that is split up.
Agreed but there are only a few ways to properly monotize games like OW for additional content. Either microtransactions, expansions, or packs. A game's base price can pay for only so many content updates before it isn't profitable anymore. In today's games of matchmaking we can't just rely on custom content and servers to keep a community together playing a game like the days of CS:S. It just doesn't work.

Returning to my previous point, I'm okay with microtransactions to support future game development, as long as the updates are frequent and good quality. I'm not okay with microtransactions being an online casino with an absurdly low chance of winning [getting the exact skin you want].
They literally advertised content updates before the game came out, you could sue if they never released more content.
Yes but did you really think there wouldn't be a catch to that? They are a business, they have to make they money for content creation somehow. We knew about the boxes for a while.

Duplicates turning into a currency in which you can spend on anything you want at a better conversion rate than coins.
I think Overwatch should follow something similar to HoTS. From what I saw you can still get event items from boxes (I unboxed a Basketball championship mount and I think that was an event but not positive) and if you don't want to test your luck you can just buy the items you want with money.
I think people are exaggerating just how desperately Blizzard is hurting for money. The game came out last year, I doubt they really need to nickle and dime us yet. I don't even mind that Overwatch has microtransactions, I just dislike how purposefully manipulative the implementation is. I'd be down for a system where you could just buy specific legendary skins for a fiver or something, but instead we've got a system which exists to put pressure on players to gamble on lootboxes to maybe get what they want.
It gives me the feeling of playing Free-to-play runescape and seeing "MEMBER'S ONLY" everywhere. But you know, that was free.
How is that comparable? You're missing out on cosmetic content, not half of the game and its mechanics.
I want player and skill rewards. I want a skin that shows someone is the epitome of badass because they earned it.
This is all I really want [editline]27th April 2017[/editline]
I think Overwatch should follow something similar to HoTS. That's a feature that is so badly needed in Overwatch.
I want player and skill rewards. I want a skin that shows someone is the epitome of badass because they earned it.
I hope when they add skins you unlock for being exceptional players for a given hero, the one they add for genji is literally named "Pro Genji"
Would be nice to have reward skins. But I bet they will just lock them behind competitive instead. ....and then make them exclusive to only that season. :v:
Would be nice to have reward skins. But I bet they will just lock them behind competitive instead. ....and then make them exclusive to only that season. :v:
I wouldn't even mind that. I know lots of people would hate it, but I personally think it would be cool.
I wouldn't even mind that.
I would. Achievement Skins are more open to everyone instead of the people who play comp religiously. You just need to be good enough to get the achievement instead of grinding comp matches for the points.
Since I had to play Heroes of the Storm for the sake of my friends, let's take a moment to appreciate how badass HotS Hanamura theme is Don't ask me what the giant mecha is. I don't have any clue
I would. Achievement Skins are more open to everyone instead of the people who play comp religiously. You just need to be good enough to get the achievement instead of grinding comp matches for the points.
Yeah I know you would, based upon your previous post. I'm just saying that I like the idea of having a bragging rights skin for being so good in a certain season a la end of season rewards like the spray and player icon.
Recent patch added the Officer D.Va skin/spray/icon, you should be able to see them in the menu now.
(I unboxed a Basketball championship mount and I think that was an event but not positive)
Pretty sure that came with the Azmodunk skin, which annoys me because I bought that skin and now I don't have the mount. I also kinda dislike that master skins are just like every other skin now. It was supposed to show you earned it.

You want to talk about hurting the community, how about putting a $40 paywall to even playing the game in the first place. Those long queue times everybody complains about would be a hell of a lot shorter without the paywall.
Expansion packs without dividing playerbase are a lot trickier in a competitive multiplayer game, but not impossible by any means. Still not a chance in hell Blizzard is going to give up this extortive gambling system due to how profitable it is.
I wish No Limits was still in the arcade this week. I want to try and get those last three lootboxes but I find a lot of the arcade modes really long and/or frustrating.
