The Literature Club doesn't exist anymore
There is no happiness to be found in the literature club.
In reference to Katawa Shoujou: Rins route actually hit me right in the heart strings. It's true that if you don't "get" her outlook, then it often makes no sense. But for me, it resonated enough to make me misty eyed. It's so far one of only... 3? Games I think? That have done that. One of the others being Undertale. (The True Pacifist Ending... man, the feels.) I'm pretty sure there was another one but I can't remember what it was. My BF and I watched one of his friends play through DDLC recently, though, via stream. And goddamnit, they were too smart. They called a bunch of story beats way before they happened, like[sp]Monika being self aware and controlling the game, Sayori being depressed/suicidal, Yuri's self harm...[/sp]They also[sp]deleted Monika way faster than anybody I've seen. Like, before she was even finished her "introduction" speech to her warped world in act 3.[/sp] The only thing they didn't call ahead of time was[sp]Sayori becoming aware in act 4 only to be stopped by Monika.[/sp]and in fairness, that part has taken everybody I've seen off-guard. Although, they did guess ahead of time that[sp]being the Literature Club President was what granted the girls self-awareness.[/sp] Damn smart people ruining twists for themselves ahead of time...

Rather, I think it reflects a little badly on anyone who didn't guess somewhere vaguely with what Monika and Sayori end up doing, especially Monika. It's painfully obvious.
I mean, on the first playthrough it's rather obvious to anyone who's been close or had [sp]Depression[/sp] themselves where Sayori was heading toward. All the while, it's painfully obvious that Monika [sp] is omnipotent or at the very least self-aware as a character [/sp] because of her constant explanation of game mechanics, commenting on things she should not be able to know and etc. Let alone the poems that these characters write which are just an opening to their souls.
A while's in? I'll grant you. Especially after Monika starts with all that[sp]save me/load me[/sp]stuff. This person, however, immediately started to suspect Monika was up to no good just from her sprite pose. And while I initially took her fourth-wall breaks as cute developer jokes (I've seen plenty of other games do that, after all.) The person we were watching's first words upon reading them were[sp]"Oh my god, she knows she's in a game..."[/sp]And they guessed[sp]Sayori was depressed[/sp]well before the poem section, at that, based purely on a few dialogue strings and some actions. Like, I don't think I communicated well enough just how early this friend figured stuff out. They had a huge portion of the mid/late game twists figured out by the end of the first poetry session. It was kind of crazy how quick they cottoned on. I mean, I'm no genius, I'll be the first to admit. And even I had a pretty clear idea of what was happening around the middle of the game. The moment Sayori's behavior changed, I had a theory in my head that turned out to be pretty damn close to the end result. But that's quite a way's in and after several hints. And even then, there were things that threw me for a loop. I knew going in that the game had "something" horror related in it. But it still managed to exceed my expectations in a lot of ways. This person, though? They might as well have read the script ahead of time.
didnt know this was the katawa shoujo thread
Sorry, I have to find members for the Visual Novel club! ahahah. Spend time with me.
Sorry, I have to find members for the Visual Novel club! ahahah. Spend time with me.
You know you're in too deep if you have a vndb backlog.
You know you're in too deep if you have a vndb backlog.
It's for educational purposes, I swear.
My opinion list on what a good vn that I played is 1:katawa shoujo 2:doki doki literature club 3:princess evangile+it's fan disc
DDLC's nominated steam award category is today, "Defies Description", vote now
DDLC's nominated steam award category is today, "Defies Description", vote now
I'm a little annoyed by the image they used.
I'm a little annoyed by the image they used.
The thing saddens me, truly, but at this point the general public knows the hidden nature of the game even without having actually touched it

Isn't that the jumpscare only used when [SP]it recognises you're streaming the game?[/SP]
Did they just change the picture? It was [sp]the monika jumpscare[/sp], now it's [sp]glitched out yuri[/sp] [editline]27th December 2017[/editline] Nevermind, the pictures change if you refresh the page
I could be wrong but im pretty sure its[sp]just if you are running OBS[/sp]
It also [sp]checks for XSplit[/sp] as well. It just [sp]checks your computer's running process list for any of the items in a hardcoded variable called "stream_list": $ stream_list = ["obs32.exe", "obs64.exe", "obs.exe", "xsplit.core.exe"] Which basically tells the game to check for any process in that list and if it finds one it jumps to the streaming jumpscare sequence.[/sp] Certainly not innovative, but refreshing to see something like that be utilized.

So, uh... I remember someone in another thread mentioning that DDLC was a bit of a mindfuck and made him feel 'violated', so since I'm the sort of gamer who has to touch a hot stove to learn what it's like to be burned, I went and got the game. What am I in for?

VNs aren't really my thing, but I have to say, if this ends up getting dark later on it's sure got me fooled now.
VNs aren't really my thing, but I have to say, if this ends up getting dark later on it's sure got me fooled now.
Good luck! It's a bit long which for VN's really hurt me but that ending was so worth it.

I played the game mostly blind (I just heard that it was hecked up) and liked it but I'm not sure if it deserves all the IT BROKE NEW GROOOUND praise it's been getting if I'm going to be honest. Like it's done well enough even if it does get kinda predictable but I'm not like, ranting or raving about it or anything. I can think of a good handful of indies that had a similar gimmick with files and the like so I'm not sure why it seems to be treated as if it's brand new here. Just personal opinion though.

Just personal opinion though.
It got picked up by media is all. I guess people get more shocked by the idea of a cute girly game [sp]basicly being emotional traumatic piece of work[/sp]. This is not revolutionary but the effect is certainly really pronounced in Doki Doki and [sp]really fits with the plot instead of being just a gimmic[/sp].
Out of sheer curiosity due to Kazutaka Kodaka's tweet, I decided to go to Nico Nico Douga and see if there were any videos on the game. I don't know if I should be surprised or not, but there is! Still not a finished playthrough, but the person doing these videos has not only translated everything and displayed it in text on the side, not only given the characters unique synthetic voices and respectively colored text, but [sp]also looks into the files[/sp]! I'm not familiar at all with the NND "Western Games" gaming community, but this seems rather professional! It makes me wonder how DDLC is being received over there, and makes me sad that I don't know Japanese, since I can't read what most of the comments whizzing by are saying.

Just personal opinion though.
I honestly was not that surprised and didn't find that it was that ground breaking, but that's because I've played/seen a lot of "meta" games, as well as read a lot of VNs to the point I know a lot of the trope of the genre and the tropes against the genre. However, it was really well executed, and it is free on steam, which means it has mass market appeal and it's not like it's something as niche as a traditional VN (Who are several hours long. DDLC can be finished in like 2-3 hours max). IMO it's a lot like Katawa Shoujo. It's a free, "open to the market" introduction to a niche genre. However, Katawa shoujo plays it safe, while DDLC subverts the expectations of the readers and can be enjoyed solely for the gimmick even if you don't like VNs. It also has a much bigger Streamer appeal, because people LOVE to see other people react to a massive twist.

I did enjoy watching my girlfriend play it because the twists etc hit her pretty hard because she has not, to my knowledge, played a game that will fuck with you in a meta sense.
So after experiencing DDLC; my sister whole-heartedly recommended to me a short (12 episode) anime called "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" which is very similar thematically. So I, In turn, recommend it to anyone looking for more of this sort of thing. Check it out some time, if you haven't already. It's about magical girls. [t]http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/puellamagimadokamagica.JPG[/t] It's fun. Lots of fun. [sp]Until episode 3, anyway. [/sp]
