So I'm not too far into the story. Maybe three, four days in. And I'm already starting to become worried.
[sp]So I was chasing after Yuri, because I found her introversion endearing. But Sayori seemed to have a thing for the player character from the beginning, and there was much that could be read between the lines of her cheery demeanor. She asks me walking home one day whether I'd walk Yuri home if she asked, and I figured it'd be best to reassure her. Regardless, the next day, Sayori was uncharacteristically downcast, and left to go home early. All of these things, all of these signs, set off red flags in my head. Her insisting I spend time with the others and not worry about her, her manipulation of the others and the player to arrange for him to join the club, her melancholy satisfaction to see the person she obviously has feelings for spending time with someone else... I've seen that sort of behavior before, in real people, and it never boded well. Then the game makes it so you've got to pick Yuri or Natsuki to help for the festival so you don't get to check in on Sayori... I don't like this at all. Are things aready about to go wrong?[/sp]
Good lord.
[sp]And now I go talk to Sayori and she finally spills the beans - then I learn Yuri's got a fascination with knives and I suddenly remember she always wears long sleeves. Is every member of this club somehow messed up? Or am I imagining things?[/sp]

This kind of told me what was coming, anyway.
I honestly was not that surprised and didn't find that it was that ground breaking, but that's because I've played/seen a lot of "meta" games, as well as read a lot of VNs to the point I know a lot of the trope of the genre and the tropes against the genre.
However, it was really well executed, and it is free on steam, which means it has mass market appeal and it's not like it's something as niche as a traditional VN (Who are several hours long. DDLC can be finished in like 2-3 hours max).
IMO it's a lot like Katawa Shoujo. It's a free, "open to the market" introduction to a niche genre. However, Katawa shoujo plays it safe, while DDLC subverts the expectations of the readers and can be enjoyed solely for the gimmick even if you don't like VNs. It also has a much bigger Streamer appeal, because people LOVE to see other people react to a massive twist.
I guess I just went in with my expectations high I guess. I heard about the game for awhile now but never looked into it really because Cutsey Waifu VN's aren't my thing (I know I know)
When I saw it won a award for best story on the PC or whatever was like "Well shit I guess I should at least give it a try" but like, it didn't even come close to something like NieR:Automata's story/themes and didn't really do anything that new that I haven't already seen with other indies.
Iunno, like I said it getting a award like that probably didn't help it in my case.
So after experiencing DDLC; my sister whole-heartedly recommended to me a short (12 episode) anime called "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" which is very similar thematically.
So I, In turn, recommend it to anyone looking for more of this sort of thing.
Check it out some time, if you haven't already. It's about magical girls.
*img*
It's fun. Lots of fun.
[sp]Until episode 3, anyway. [/sp]
Real talk, my friend recommended me that and so I watched the first two episodes, thought it was a generic magical girls anime and dropped it for a solid month before getting convinced to continue. Does not disappoint
So, I played through it again. Defied [sp]Monika[/sp] at every turn.
And in the end, [sp]when all was over, when the story had come to a conclusion that no longer surprised me, I deleted Monika. Followed through the dialogue when I next started the game, and it finally restarted with all the characters except her. I restored her deleted file, and got "I don't want to come back".[/sp]
Is this finally going to be a normal game? [sp]Or is there worse lying in wait for me?[/sp]
Played and finished today. Convinced friend to play it. Watched him play for two hours. Then we talked about what the fuck happened for the next two hours. Imagine creating a game with so much to talk about in just a 3 hour playtime. It blows my mind.

I don't understand what you're saying here. The game itself is pretty linear.

Also please tag any spoilers everyone, images included. I'll update the thread title as the current one is a bit misleading on the stance on spoilers, my bad.
When (major spoilers) [sp]Yuri stabs herself and dies, it really is a nasty touch to force you to stare at her corpse for two in-game days until her eyes dry up and her blood turns black.[/sp]

A friend recommended me this VN and I started playing it yesterday and boy I wouldn't have thought that I get so much out of it just by simply[sp]starting the game.[/sp]
[sp]After my first route where Sayori fucking hangs herself I turned it off because it was 2am and I needed a break.
When I started DDLC again I noticed that the usual warning message at the beginning changed to asking me to backup Monika's files https://i.imgur.com/rz5jOLN.jpg .
I immediately asked my friend what the fuck that was about but he didn't had a clue what I was talking about so I tried to replicate it in order to make a screenshot.
After the third time I got this message https://i.imgur.com/kHsGK3E.jpg and after the sixth time I got another message https://i.imgur.com/v79vSRU.jpg .
Then I got the Monika thing again after the ninth time and we both initially came to the conclusion that it rotates through these 3 startup messages after every third attempt.
I wanted to be 100% sure about that so I tried to go for the 12th startup but something weird happened just before that.[/sp]
[sp]When I tried starting it for the 11th time I was immediately greeted with an end card https://i.imgur.com/fpTqBVv.jpg and some freaky distorted music.
Then I got this fucking picture which made my heart go fucking ballistic https://i.imgur.com/Huc3ysr.jpg (The fact that the game gave me a zoomed in version of Monika's face just before I closed it didn't made it better).
I want to get off this wild ride but I can't stop...[/sp]

ur av is appropriate
So I just played this game recently. Damn was it an experience. I actually lost some sleep after the first thing that happened in the game...
The one bit that has stuck with me even after all this time is [sp] in act 2, the bit where during the 2nd CG with Yuri (with the chocolate) she just ups and stares at you. With how it takes control away from you, for a split second it had me fooled and terrified.[/sp]
I also loved the conflicting artstyle bits, reminded me of courage.
I swear the CG scene in Act I of Yuri's Route where you feed her some chocolate, be it for the odd atmosphere, the questionable shape of the chocolate or Yuri's over the top reaction, was downright hylarious to me.
Since at the time I was home alone, when I saw it I literally screamed "For fuck's sake girl, I've just put a damn chocolate in your mouth, not my bloody ****!"
My favorite part of my experience with DDLC, and where I felt it was at its best, was
[sp]In the first act where you were simultaneously both made more paranoid by the poems and had your guard being dropped by the more saccharine and innocent character interactions. The atmosphere was really something else. As the poems flirted more with reality and, subsequently, with the darker side of reality, I became more wary of the darker abyss that lied within this game while at once becoming much more intimately invested into the characters. I found myself deeply relating to a lot of what the characters thought, felt, had opinions on, and were going through, and that was something both comforting and unsettling. It perfectly sets up the climax and subsequent collapse in Act 2.[/sp]
[sp]I really wish people didn't disregard what I think is the brilliance of the first few hours of the game. People just say "oh you have to drag yourself through hours of menial, rote VN anime bullshit before you get to the good stuff" but that is vastly underselling how important act 1 is and how well executed I think it is.[/sp]
The bit that got me real good wasn't anything incredible but [sp]when Yuri's trying to talk to you without Monika in the room. That and when Natsuki tries to secretly talk to you with the poem[/sp] really made me think of how real the characters seemed, dealing with things the best they can in the way they think is right.
Just played the game a few hours ago, took about 5 1/2 hours including lunch break and random interruptions.
Words about my experience with the game:
[SP]I liked the game though it didn't go as far as i expected it to go with the meta stuff. When the first 'surprise' happened, i probably went further than game expected me to go.
First I found about the characters/ folder, and the missing sayori.chr file. Attempted to restore it from the zip file expecting something to happen immediately or shortly after, nothing happened. Closed the game and tried again, didn't do anything either but the story continued.
But before that i had decoded the base64 text in yuri.chr, searched for strings in the scripts.rpa, saw the thumbnails in the character folders, renamed monika.chr to suspect.chr.bak to prevent the game from reading it(i know it could have just looked for sha1sums) as well as setting everything to read only and immutable getting a real error unlike the one in the scene, about the game failing to create monika.chr.
I figured the game dev didn't go that far with the meta stuff so I continued the game after setting permissions to normal (but sayori still read only). By this point I had read the traceback and 90% sure it was monika screwing with everything. I was calmly pissed, went along with the next part to figure out if it was a permadeath or if sayori could have been restored.
Deleted monika alt-tabbing again after yuri suicided, growing tired of her messing with the game.
Used skip dialog for the first time while waiting for the week expecting to either see a loop or a 'segfault' but the game continued, and shortly after
noticed that i deleted monica and proceeded. Monica 'dies', restored her file out of curiosity about what she says. Get to the part where it starts deleting herself (and tells me) so i set permissions again to avoid that and the game proceeds, ends. I go check the wiki for the stuff i missed which is the written note by the dev about finding all the content and the slight ending change(at the expense of torturing monika if i understood right). Not worth to play again through all for that so that's where i stop. Atleast for now.
So I got the same peeve that I got with similar games in that they don't really break the wall but replace it with glass. Adding to the list, awaiting for extra content or the day I get experienced enough with the skills necessary for a fangame. Can't have something pretending to be real yet keep my hands tied preventing me from using all resources at my disposal to solve the problems within it.
But overall I liked the game and I'm glad I got around to play it.[/SP]

I think you just expected something else of the game to be honest.

I went blind expecting nothing, but wanted more 'depth' in places after finishing.
The hasty wall of text may sound like harsh criticism or that it failed to impress but really it's just that everyone else already
praised the game for the things it got right. [sp]i'm too fucking tsundere[/sp]

So you went in blind, but then at the first sign of a meta joke about a python error immediately opened a hex editor, recognized encoded text and decoded it? I don't doubt your abilities, I'm just surprised you were totally unspoiled for the many months this game's been out.
For these kind of games, the meta parts aren't jokes but essential parts of the whole. Didn't use a hex editor but base64, strings, and vi. Which are standard *nix tools although a file manager and a different text editor would've been enough. Even with my minimal knowledge of these things (and none for python) it was easy to get to things that weren't relevant.
I wouldn't expect the game to require in-depth computer knowledge to progress but a separate branch/path is plausible.
Anyways it's really simple to avoid spoilers since I'm "busy" a lot, and avoid places where I could get spoiled about a game.

You completely missed the whole point of that part of the game then. The game isn't centered around the meta jokes. In fact they're only a small piece of the game. The point of that stuff being there is to contribute to the underlying theme of the game which is [sp]Project Libitina.[/sp]
[sp]Project Libitina.[/sp]
[sp]I still have no idea what that is. Is it like a build-up to another story the author (i forgot his name) is working on? I mean, I'm sure it doesn't reference the game at all but there was some dialogue in ddlc that referenced that document, something about third eye iirc[/sp]

[sp]The hypothetical separate path in which the player has a better understanding of the meta stuff just changes the journey a bit still leading him to libitina.
Think of all the ways you can mess with undertale but things barely change at all because of it. Attention to detail/depth.
You're giving little importance to the meta aspect considering the glitches and the club president(s) go mad from realizing "they're scripts".[/sp]
[sp]The scare where Yuri stares at you with pure white eyes and distorted music gave me shivers and I quit and haven't played since
this fuckingg game[/sp]
Just popping in here to say that I have been fucked up
