I beat this game yesterday. I enjoyed most of it, but the only thing that was causing me to stick with it up until the end was the promise of psychological horror, because holy hell is this game slow. I know that the idea is to play the typical, bland visual novel aspect straight until something really fucked up happens but I swear it took me almost two hours of reading through dull dialogue to get to the point where something happens. When the ball did get rolling, I did enjoy it a lot more despite the messed up moments being a bit spread out afterwards since the player is already supposed to be aware something is up. [sp]Now I know Monica is deliberately trying to keep you from noticing but in a meta sense[/sp] it makes the game drag on. I do have to commend this game's art style and character designs though. Not because it's pretty to look at or anything, and aside from Monica (though pretty much only for reasons you realize late in the game like [sp]like her portrait being the only one to directly face the player, her name obviously not being Japanese and her having black stockings which were all clever allusions[/sp] I think you have to make a conscious effort to make a game look this bland, the entire presentation up until things get nuts very much sell the idea of being some low effort VN freeware you'd find randomly. [sp]Monica is a really great villain, she might just be one of my favourite game villains ever. I'm a sucker for miserable backstories in villains, and I love the idea of some supernatural entity bound to computers longing to interact with a world that isn't binary, and haphazardly trying to obtain affection by manifesting itself through a game. Very cool concept and she gave the appropriate amount of sympathy and feels when all the other girls (who are revealed to be stupid automatons anyway) failed to invest me emotionally.[/sp]
people always bring up the [sp]monika is different to other girls[/sp] thing but people miss the most obvious detail - on the splash screen her socks are black when all the other girls are white. Ive yet to hear someone bring it up but its like.. from the start of the game you can see it and its not hidden
I thought it was just an arbitrary character design thing. Well finished the game last night, god what a ride. [sp] Yuri's eyes make me EXTREAMLY uncomfortable. Easily the worst part of the game. Though I coped by calling theme Steve Buscemi eyes :v: [/sp]
For sure we will know in 2018. I am very curious [sp]about the the reason why they make these experiments. It seems the 3rd eye is only active when there ia only high sexual tension.[/sp]
There is a [sp]meta-meta game going on with this game.[/sp] I don't know how many of you guys looked into the [sp]character files[/sp] but there are some [sp] hidden things in the files which point to an ARG based outside of the game entirely and may point to another game in the future or a book.[/sp] Here is a link to the thread. Spoilers be warned. [sp]https://www.reddit.com/r/ARG/comments/71z2pt/doki_doki_literature_club_has_more_to_it_than_we/[/sp] [sp] Basically, the character files are hidden messages that point to some odd things such as the "Third Eye" which is a reoccurring theme in game and in the ARG. The website that can be reached http://www.projectlibitina.com/ references what looks like human experiments on a subject which would be the same age as one of the characters in the game. There is a tie in to a short horror story written by the same author as the game which I remember reading a long time ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/3azru6/i_found_a_small_box_hidden_in_a_mall_that/ There is a lot more to this game than what it seems. Its an ARG/alt universe hidden underneath a meta horror game disguised as a dating sim shovelware. This is some interesting stuff and it doesn't just look like all flare. There is an underlying story here that teases a future release of information. Keep a close eye on this. [/sp] [sp]https://pastebin.com/8k8D0DAn is interesting as well, a compilation of all of Monika's lines [/sp]

@Big post-ending spoilers Holy shit [sp]talk about a rabbit hole. There's a literal entire ARG underneath this meta-game. Seems like it's ongoing too, interesting considering "Libitina" seems to be a word that keeps cropping up during this arg.[/sp] [editline]Edited: [/editline] [sp]Sexual Response Test is bypassed during prepubescence. Requested bypassing the following tests: Third Eye Activation Test; Third Eye Suppression Test; Life Threat Response Test; Life Threat Elimination Test. All requests denied. Libitina has not yet recovered from the termination of XXXXXX and is not expected to do so in the near future. Continuing to administer these tests will only accelerate the deterioration of Libitina's health. You are choosing to avoid the measures necessary to prevent a repeat scenario, Doctor. Will you not have as much faith in your personnel as you do in your God?[/sp] I wonder if [sp]Libitina[/sp] is actually referring to [sp]the person placed in the role of the Club President.[/sp] Particularly because [sp]Libitina is a metonym for death and the underworld. And the fact that "repeat scenario" implies there may have been multiple Libitina before this current one.[/sp] Looks like I know what I'm doing with the rest of my day :hypeisreal:
[sp]This was discovered just under a month ago. Most people are in agreement that Project Libitina which was the culmination of the ARG is the name of their next game with a release date of sometime 2018[/sp]
Saya no Uta [have sex scenes, but the major focus is horror] Ever17
Hey, I just finished Saya no Uta, and I just wanted to say: fuck you. It's an amazing visual novel. It absolutely blew me away. But I hate you for daring to recommend it so openly and innocently, DDLC is nothing compared to it. That shit is the most fucked up thing I've ever seen. Visually it's already sickening, but the psychological horror is beyond anything I thought could be put in a single fiction. So yeah. I don't regret it, but I hold you responsible for ruining my sleep for the next 2 weeks.

It's had me questioning my own tastes in a way that was I find very troubling and had me thinking about anime writing and that industry in general. I'm not sure how much of this post actually needs to be spoilered but I'm erring on the safe side. The characters were all written in such a way that [sp]it was so completely transparent what the game was doing. Natsuki in particular is written to so perfectly mimic the lowest of hanging fruit for otaku-bait style characters. And I fell for it. Hook, line, and sinker. Even though I KNEW what was going on, I KNEW that she was very purposefully and generically written to appeal to a straw manned and stereotyped audience, I STILL totally fell for it and thought Natsuki was the raddest shit and wanted to play through her route as best I could.[/sp] [sp]For like at least a day, it had me wondering, is it really that easy to write a likeable character? Am I really such a schmuck, that to get me to love a character it's as easy as filling out a checklist of character tropes? It had me wondering if I really was so superficial that that's all it takes, and to add insult to injury it's so obviously transparent what they were doing. I completely recognized what they were doing, and didn't care.[/sp] Feels bad man. [sp]I definitely got the self-reflecting "existential crisis" from the game, but maybe not in the way he intended.[/sp]
[sp]Am I really such a schmuck that to get me to love a character it's as easy to filling out a checklist of character tropes?[/sp]
Not at all. The setting where the characters interact is the number 1 concept that makes characterization possible. All of their actions, motivations and speeches must be influenced by the setting in order for the plot to work - therefore, if the setting is unique [sp](which is the case for DDLC)[/sp], the characters will be unique as well. A thing or two about them might not be, but their WHOLE character is anyway. You don't need to make your characters very complex to have them be likeable.

The best comparison I have between that and DDLC is the fact that [sp] there's no happy ending for anyone :([/sp]
[sp]Monika sitting in the room with you[/sp] is the happy ending

So are there happy endings to this game? The one I got was [sp]monica deleting the whole game and leaving me a letter[/sp]
So are there happy endings to this game? The one I got was [sp]monica deleting the whole game and leaving me a letter[/sp]
Why do you want to do the other endings? Just Monika 's is good enough IMO [sp]If you savescum and get all the CGs of all the different choices before the hanging, at the end after Monika's deletion and Sayuri going meta, she notices "you've spent a lot of time with all the girls", so she thanks you before deleting everything and gets you a developer note instead of Monika's letter. Which is the closest thing to a happy ending anyways :v[/sp]
Okay, fair enough. I won't be replaying the game since I may go insane

Finally got around to playing this, don't regret it one bit. Need to try getting the good end now.

Yuri is best girl
Yuri is best girl
Gonna be honest, even after [sp]she gets that crazy face with the shrunken pupils and the creepy smile[/sp] I still found her attractive. In fact, it probably made her even more attractive to me. That's not a good sign, is it?

People have been calling me crazy for thinking the same thing, without realising that it is they who truly don't understand.
Yuri is the first character I've ever proudly called "my waifu" and I miss her every day and night.

But as I said before, I suggest the others to not read futher and just play the game. [sp]Yes, I mean YOU.[/sp]
