It was probably an off hour then.
It was an early afternoon, around 3 PM PST.
I know nights are more active, but I wouldn't have guessed that a Saturday afternoon would be so empty.
There have been a couple times where I joined a game that seemed doomed from the start, like what you described, only to leave and instantly join a different game with a 95+ playercount and no other issues. I think you just got unlucky, it's only happened to me a couple times but it has happened.
Clearly something either gets fucked up with the server collecting enough clients or there's just a tremendous coincidence of players leaving the match for whatever reason. Either way, the solution is to leave and try again.
that's a relief to hear.
this is pretty much the only go-to game for a specific group of friends.
I occasionally get moments, even at peak times here, where I just CANNOT connect to any servers. I'm fairly certain it's a connectivity issue more than a player count issue, ie; whatever servers are handling matchmaking are just having a stroke. Sometimes 5 minutes later I'm overwhelmed with instant connections, sometimes not.
This game is free for a short time.

[ Distant Magic School Bus plays ]
The best part is the passenger from another team that managed to get in with him, only to be taken for a fuckin wild ride.
He gets run over trying to get out the brief second the hacker parks the bus on the ground.
fpp mode is coming to the mobile version (eventually). also i got a new phone about a month ago (s9) and fuck me pubg mobile looks good on the highest setting on my phone and still runs at about 60fps. theres god rays that come through trees and shit.
Even with just the Erangel and Miramar options I sometimes struggle to get put into a match instantly on FPP Miramar.
Though I'm not entirely sure why they've gone down the route of "create a queue for every permutation". That's really not required. Unless I'm misunderstanding them adding new maps and allowing people to select them shouldn't create "exponential" increases in queue requirements. Just a linear increase of (perspective x squad size) (currently 6 as partial squads backfill squads) per map. Sure it's more queues but it'd still be manageable.
It's not like they don't have the resources to maintain something low overhead like cloud queue systems. Shits super cheap compared to every other cloud aspect of the game.
