Will I be able to make up for having none from passives with gear alone?
yes, you can cap your resistances only with gear getting it on the tree just makes it easier, but you will end up with less damage you could always grab some res while leveling if you feel you need it and just respec out of it once you get better gear (you get about 18 free refund points from quests)
That build looks great, but will the lack of resistances be a real problem?I mean, there's already so much damage and cast speed worked in that I could probably get away with picking gear based on ES and resistances first and foremost, but will I be able to make up the difference with just that? Otherwise, I'm not too worried about this skill tree change anymore! It's even better than my current build in everything but those resistances.
You can easily cap resistances on gear only. Aim to get 60+ total resistance on each item and at minimum 100 on a defensive shield. You can sacrifice resistance on jewelry for Cast speed and Lightning damage if you want. Obviously try to aim for AR/ES or just pure ES gear in general. Shield is up to you. You can go for an offensive Spell damage shield to boost your damage or a more defensive one, pick what you need depending on the situation.
Thanks for all the help. On an unrelated note: what would you say is the easiest/cheapest/most beginner friendly build for reaching end-game content? I want to try getting my friend in on this, but I'm not very good with builds and don't know what to recommend him!

It all depends on your friends their playstyle though. I've played an infernal blow Facebreakers build to lv 75 with around 20k DPS which was pretty fun and really cheap to build with the essential items. Ofcourse you can make it as expensive as you want, but overall it's a pretty cheap and "newbie-friendly" build. Although you might want to wait until the new skill tree gets released, this might change things around a bit.

Especially if you stack up the crit. It's a bit hard to play in the beginning though, best to supplement it with other skills at first.
I found EK boring because of the low cast speed, but that's been changed I think so it might be better for a fun, easy and cheap starter build, you can't beat groundslam marauder imo good damage, impossible to die, and practically no cost to gearing http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/73072 here's an in-depth guide, but it's so simple you don't need to follow it once you have the gist of it, it's really hard to fuck up your passive choices with this build
My first actual endgame build was CoCEK and that shit was hilariously fun. Especially when I decide to put stuff like fireball or any lag inducing spells in place of EK

Wow, I just had a 19% quality Punishment gem drop! Would it be worth spending a GCP on it and trying to sell it, or is that one not popular enough to get much for? What's a fair price? If it's nothing impressive, I might just hold onto it. I still want to try a summoner build one day, and it seems useful for that.
Quality gems have dropped a lot in price since the vendor recipe to make a 20% quality gem was found out.
Oh, bummer. Guess I'll just keep it then. Here I was thinkin' I'd just hit paydirt!
You can probably still get an Exalt out of it, it won't sell instantly but if you keep linking it in trade chat or post it in a thread on the official forums you might find a buyer.
Eh, I might just hold onto it! I'll keep that in mind, though. Side note: The Imperial Gardens are fucking annoying. I'm 7 levels higher than the monsters, and they're still kicking my ass. And the thing is such a damn maze that I can't find the waypoint for shit.
Can you link info on this? First time hearing this.
http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Vendor_recipes#Skill_Gems Basically, when you vendor a Lv20 Skill + 1 GCP you get the skill back with 20% quality but lv 1.
Can you link info on this? First time hearing this.
Level 20 gem + 1 GCP = Level 1 Gem 20 Quality.
Are they changing the passive tree much in the next expansion/patch? Haven't played in a while, logged in to find I have 81 points and I have no idea what I'm doing with them. When I last played I was just following some guide on my SC Scion for a 2h sword spectral throw build, but the passive tree changed or something and the guides tree link doesn't really work anymore, but I'm terrible at building things so any help would be nice. I'm also wondering what I should do with 500 coin point things? I was thinking ghostly weapon effect and a premium stash tab bundle, but I don't know. Any suggestions? [editline]18th August 2014[/editline] Oh and what ever came of that white socket stuff? iirc there was some image that had a white socket on an item that wasn't the robes, what was that about?
Vaal Orbs can do a whole bunch of crazy stuff on items, including changing sockets to white ones which can socket any gem color.

But the amount of life you're going to be getting from the tree will be a lot less compared to now but they're compensating by raising the base life by 50%. 2H Scion ST I threw together a Scion 2H ST which can get 2500 DPS with a 5L and a Kaom's Primacy which shouldn't cost a lot of currency at all to get. This will be able to carry you to endgame and through some low/mid level maps until you get a good amount of currency together to play something long-term. I played a similair build as my first character in 1.0 and managed to make about 30-35 Ex by level 81 without being lucky with drops. And you're talking about Vaal Orbs which is a new currency item released in 1.1 which allows you to corrupt an item. That means that you have a chance of getting a different unique base affix, white socket, nothing at all or even having your unique become a useless rare. You can get stuff like +1 Maximum curses, +1 to level of gems in this item etc. and if you're lucky enough(or rich enough) to obtain these affixes it can drastically change your game. But once you corrupt an item it can no longer be modifies so if you plan on corrupting an item make sure you got the amount of sockets and colours you want.
Less than 2 days before the update is released, and today we got information about the last master: Zana, the Master Cartographer. http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/08/18/final-hero-revealed-for-path-of-exile-forsaken-masters And in case you hadn't seen it yet, here is the video reveal for the previous master: Tora, Master of the Hunt. And in case you also missed this: They revealed information about the two new leagues a while ago: [Rampage] - [Beyond] I'm not sure which league to go for first, maybe Beyond. I have even less of an idea what master I'll be going for either.

Already looking good. Say what you will about PoE, at least they're listening to the community's needs and requirements.
I love having an army of level 65+ toons :v:
Hi guys, I'm doing the newbie-friendly marauder mentioned before and wondered which path is better suited: The yellow path gets me +1 endurance charge (don't know what that is) and lifereg iirc, the red path gets me a bunch of strength. Thanks in advance if anyone knows!

Don't aim for Strenght/Dexterity/Intelligence in the tree(Unless it's a +30 node you need) and just use it as a highway for more important nodes. Endurance charge increases your Physical resistance and Elemental resistance, you can easily gain these charges by an ability called Enduring Cry. 4% Physical Resistance and 4% Elemental Resistance per charge meaning that with 4 charges you will be able to obtain 16% more Ele/Phys resist which really helps beefing up your character. Common way to gain Endurance charges is to link Enduring Cry together with Cast when damage taken support gem which will automatically cast the ability for you when you take X amount of damage. Oh, cool! Thanks. Here's hoping for some Storm Call changes. It is very difficult to use effectively right now!
