There's absolutely no reason to ever start a character on standard

I was playing Hardcore nemesis and got to level 8. Then I was frozen in the middle of a ton of fish spawns in a cave and got murdered. That run didn't last long. If you combine that with the fact that you lose 10% exp on death in Merciless, you aren't able to advance, if anything at an insanely slow pace with many deaths due to Elemental Reflect packs.
Does the Fork gem not work with Spectral Throw? It decreases my damage but doesn't fork the projectiles at all.

Spectral throw is like a boomerang, it's more like an aoe spell. I use Fork with Split Arrow. I usually end up killing more mobs outside of my screen vision that the ones I can see.

You might come across some problems on higher difficulties if you go melee on your first try, so I'd suggest a ranger. Lightning Arrow + Fork + Split Projectiles is really fucking funny, by the way. It shoots 3 lightning arrows, which on hit shock the target + up to 3 other enemies, and the arrow then splits into two more behind the hit unit. The damage dealt by single arrows is pitiful (I use Flaming Arrow for single target DpS) but when there are like 4-10 enemies in a tight group, they all get shocked multiple times due to being hit by so many lightning arrows. There's potential to have 9 arrows out of a single cast, all of which shock up to 4 units so with a single shot if I'm really lucky with the enemy placement, I can damage 36 units (or same units multiple times)

I really like my Scion spectral throw with life steal. With blood magic, all I have to do is hold right click and I can't die. Literally beat Dominus by standing still just throwing axes around. I hope cruel difficulty doesn't bullshit me out of the build.
Spectral throw is pretty damn strong. I've been running it as a kiting spell for my build
