Friend of mine played Low Life Crit Kinetic Blast with a similar build in the Torment league and was top 10 with it.
Your DPS relies heavily on aura level and gear obviously.

Ah sounds like it will be a fun journey. Also plan on grabbing pain attunement for that extra juicy 30%.
Kinetic blast is quite a good skill, has lots of utility and benefits when fighting in narrow corridors.

Pain Attunement is Spell Damage though, so you'll need to get a Crown of Eyes if you want to convert the bonus to Kinetic Blast.

Crown of Eyes doesn't work with Pain Attunement anymore. In 1.2 they changed it to only work with increased/decreased spell damage, Pain Attunement is more.

It's been awhile since I played, but Groundslam and Searing Bond both work great without any fancy gear. Obviously investing in better shit will take you farther into the end-game, but I was doing just fine with Dominus, Piety, and lower level maps (up to about 70, I think) before I started having real difficulty progressing and had to get some "proper" gear. Even then, it was nothing too expensive.
Yeah I was about to make a tornado shot build because it's cheap and spammy. But then I realized that there will just be another challenge league once the new expansion launches so I'm probably just going to wait until it drops.

Around 4-5 per fusing at the current rate, IIRC
I would like to get some help theorycrafting a build.
The main idea is to use some sort of an aoe attack to proc ice nova and flame surge with coc. I would like to utilize the 3dragons helmet, so the ice nova would ignite and flame surge gets a damage boost.
The build would also use herald of ice and ash, with ele prolif. So the mobs would be ignited and shocked for mega damage.
Dunno if I can pull this off, especially with the passive tree changes it is kinda pointless to fiddle around with the skilltree app.

You can use spectral throw for the CoC, it's the safest for that, though the cheapest CoC would be using a wand, since they can easily get above 10% base crit and kinetic blast gives a lot of hits. Glacial cascade would be better since it can damage enemies at a longer distance.
Well I thought I would use a staff for it, those juicy staff nodes that have a chance to grant charges on block and crit strike are tempting.
I made a prototype passive tree anyway. So the basic idea is groundslam triggers ice nova and flame surge, three dragons helmet converts status effects, so mobs get shocked and ignited. EE should do it's magic. I would like to have endurance and power charges, so a little physical damage mitigated, and the spell damage also increases thanks to the power charges. Thinking about adding Discharge as a last resort "oh shit button" because I'll most likely have some charges up most of the time. Also all of my offence benefits from the aoe nodes too.
I think this would be either a cool build or a total fail. Nonetheless opinions welcome!
Oh yeah I know crafting staves is a pain in the butt.

Staffs are kinda slow, ground slam only hits a target one time as opposed to alternatives and you have no accuracy nodes which are quite important.

I'm back. I'm enjoying a new Ranger build. I'm following a guide, and it says it works with either Tornado Shot or Ice Shot, depending on your preference, but only gives the gem layouts for Tornado Shot. Any suggestions on what support gems synergize well with Ice Shot?
