It does, you get a fair number of projectiles on screen with VS + GMP + spell echo.

They're different from eachother. Armor is a damage midigation tool while Energy Shield is a life pool.
If it's your first run I wouldn't use Energy Shield alone as a life resource, just try to get as much life as possible on all your armor. Hybrid Armor / Energy Shield items should be your go-to. You can go for pure Armor but it'll be harder to meet the stat requirements and get the right socket colors.
Path of Exile can be really punishing from time to time, your focus should be on not dying at all times.

As Flashcat said, I would recommend going for hybrid gear, preferrably with an Energy Shield base. Rolling gem sockets in gear is pretty straight forward. If a piece of gear is Armour based, it will primarily roll red sockets, if your gear piece is Energy Shield it will primarily roll blue sockets and if it's Evasion it will primarily roll green. The same rule is in place for hybrid gear(Which have two base defence types, so either AR/ES, EV/ES, AR/EV) So if you have an Energy Shield and Armour gear piece it will primarily roll blue and red sockets.
Since you chose to play as a Witch, which is the typical spell caster starting location. I would recommend that you try to get Energy Shield gear with life on, as it will make it easier for you to roll the socket colour your build requires. You can also go for hybrid gear but it may be harder(read: more expensive) to get the socket colours you need to efficiently play your class.
I'd recommend that you build your first character defensively and experience the game and learn the fundamental mechanics. Don't be afraid to create a new character if your first character isn't working out the way you hoped, the first character you make will generally be a mess(Unless you follow a guide or something.)

I wanted to use sceptres simply because I like to use leap slam over lightning warp (I could switch weapon sets of course, but I find a bit bothersome)

Usually you just play through the acts by yourself, it's fun to play with multiple people but you'd only be able to play when your entire group is online so you don't progress faster than others.
Once you've finished Merciless difficulty you can start with the endgame where level difference doesn't matter all that much and it's easier to play with friends. Basically a type of item (Maps) drops sometimes which you can open and get 6 access teleports to the map. It's a zone filled with mobs and a map boss that you can kill for loot and exp.

Tested this out, doesnt work.
LMP increases total projectile count from 150 to 152, and Trap + Multiple Traps combo simply doesn't work; Even with multiple traps gem you still throw only 1 trap (but your traps still has 40% dmg reduction from multiple traps gem) so you're locked to ~150 projectiles no matter what you do.

Was playing around in standard and this beauty fell from the sky. All T1/T2, by far the best amulet I've found in this game. Best part is, one suffix is open so you could master craft crit on it for pretty cheap.

you're supposed to move around constantly, and dont get hit by any of the black arrows. If any of your targets seems to be less powerful/more squishy compared to the rest of the clones wandering around, focus fire on that one, it's the real boss. He's just absurdly durable/does a fair bit of damage, though there's talk that it is at its root a balance issue for that map level.

Choose an easy leveling skill such as flame totem (no skill points required) once you pass around 30-40 the game becomes much better.
I'm not a fan of how GGG has "balanced" a lot of uniques in 2.0.
All the good uniques like Rat's Nest, Belly of the Beast, Lightning Coil, Carcass Jack, Maligaro's gloves, ect. and all of the MFing uniques like Goldwyrms, Aurseize, and Andvarius have had their rarity increased. None of them have been nerfed. Lightning Coil is still the best option for every non-spell caster build (And even then it's probably still the best), Carcass still the best for AoE, ect. Still completely better than rare chests. They even make Brightbeak more rare and people are selling it for 18c+. Who the fuck buys a Brightbeak for 18c :v:
I'm pretty sure one of the GGG devs posted once on how they don't balance things through their rarity, I guess they don't believe in that anymore.

That Divine Righteous Fire MTX looks amazing, although Exalted Righteous Fire would've been a more fitting name if you look at previous MTX with those names
