Wow, I come back after leaving this thread for a while, and that post spawned a whole discussion.
It was because I only have 4 gigs of ram, I checked. Christ.
oh....so it was what I thought it was in my first post?
.....well, on the bright side, everyone got to show off their specs?..
.....and RAM is cheaper than a graphics card!
The editor is pretty fun to mess with

I remember the Torque terrain editor from a long time ago let you punch holes in the terrain for making caves and the like. (Not voxel support or anything, just areas without terrain to use as entrances and exits to things)
Can you still do that?

There's a cave on the free test grid map, IDK how it was done though.
They need an instant replay button, like in the DiRT games. I like driving with the camera inside the car, but I want to see the crashes from the outside.

I'm making a couple maps myself, too.

I love heightmaps.
Can you tell me how you got those grass sprites, though? I used the ground cover entity, but it's way too sparse, applies across the entire map and not onto one texture, and I can't find the texture for it.

I just used terrain paint and it applied them with the grass texture.
This game needs a tank or a monster truck for some serious car crushing
what do i do when my tire tracks texture goes missing?
I just spent an hour trying to set up my Thrustmaster Ferrari GT wheel and the only thing I can get to work is the buttons on the wheel. None of the actual axis inputs (wheel or pedals) do anything in-game. Can anyone offer any help?
I'm going to name my firstborn son, Gavril.

I suppose that makes your profile picture pretty appropriate.

Plug your controller in and start the game. When the game opens, check the console. There should be something like this:

It shows all the available axes and buttons.
As for your axes, here's a snippet from my DFGT script which should help:
moveMap.bind(%device, xaxis, joy_steer);
moveMap.bind(%device, rzaxis,"IR", brake);
moveMap.bind(%device, yaxis,"IR", accelerate);
"IR" stands for inverted and ranged.
Inverted is pretty self-explanatory; Ranged means instead of going from -1 to 1 when you press a pedal, it's 0 to 1. Not sure how to explain it better.
Your axes may vary from mine, so just test each axis.
Bah, the camera and the friction (or lack thereof) are really the only things that bug me about this game.
Other than that, I'm having a blast.

I haven't actually explored that area with the editor yet but having driven around it it appears they just modelled a cave as an object, dug a trench, and put the object in it.
This game needs a tank or a monster truck for some serious car crushing
For the moment you can significantly increase the mass of the off-road Gavril D.
Runs great and is just the sort of mindless fun I love, but I've run into a couple problems that are definitely keeping me from buying it.
I can't consistently move the camera (takes several mouse movements to even budge it, sometimes it doesn't respond at all), and it won't detect my 360 equivalent controller. Bah.
Most camera woes can be solved by pressing 5 on the numpad, and also by using the rest of the numpad and never touching the mouse ever again.
My laptop lacks a numpad, and I don't have an external keyboard on hand.
So are you saying this means I'm basically shafted, camera-wise? Definitely not buying now, at least until they fix the mouse issue. Or if you guys can help me with the 360 pad problems.
If you press fn on most laptops, 789, uio,and jkl become the numpad.
I'd still much rather get my controller to work. It's recognized by Windows and even shows up in the engine's input debug, but I can't use it. Is this a documented problem?
Besides, the pseudo-numpad with the Fn key just drives the car. I want reliable camera controls. :|

You have to create a new inputmap based on the XBOX 360 wired one. When you first start the game, open the console and scroll up until you find your controller's name and GUID. Just copy the GUID from the console to the inputmap and that's it.
Where's the input map and how do I access it?
It's in scripts\client\inputmaps. The XBOX 360 Wired file in question is named 028E045E000000000000504944564944.inputmap.cs.
You have to replace the name with your controller's GUID, just without the dashes and it should work.
Unfortunately, you have to copy it manually.
Where's the input map and how do I access it?
Additionally, how do I select text in the console? It doesn't look like it's letting me.
when it becomes possible, someone should make a long, drawn out chase scene
cars trying to get each other off the road, all damaged but still going, causing accidents along the way and all that

Excellent, worked perfectly. I never did like driving with a keyboard, I prefer the level of granularity you can get from analog controls.
That updater replaces the config file, all running it every time does is force you to re-set your options.
Lol yes but there's been 3 patches so far, and I've updated about 5 times.
So I didn't really know :pwn:

Demolition derby between 3 super engine box trucks and a hatchback would be terrifying.

Yeah I'll go contact NASA and see if we can let them borrow one of their supercomputers so we can make the scene run faster than 2 fps :v:
