it honestly took me way too long to realize that's exactly what you're supposed to do and not something you're supposed to avoid
Holy fucking shit, what a heist.
You know, it's actually kind of weird... thinking about what this has turned into. I came to Payday 2 expecting a game about high profile crime, assassinations, political jobs, robbery and other criminal ventures. Right now it's turning into a story which involves ancient conspiracies, low-key magic and plot twists that happen pretty often and yet don't get boring (at least to me). And it all comes together.
Come to think of it, if Hoxton wasn't broken out of prison, all of this could have never happened. His arrest was something that kept PAYDAY about crime. All of this bullshit - Hector's cartel, Butcher's Croatian Mob, Vlad's Rodina, the Payday gang - existed in its small bubble. Nobody gave three shits of a fuck about what happened between the users of Crime.net.
The Kataru is a force outside of the bubble. Compared to the Kataru group, the entire bubble was just a bunch of screaming kids in a playground. And for some reason, they thought they could use the Payday gang as mindless pawns who execute contracts and ask no questions.
For some reason, the Dentist decided he would have us steal the Box from the Golden Grin Casino. We didn't even know what it was for, and the Dentist promptly cut off all contact once we were done. Going further along would make us start asking questions. Questions that would have been incompatible with the Kataru's operations.
The Box we stole from GGC was a downright Pandora's Box. The moment we ended that heist, we set ourselves up for one fucking hell of a war.
The glass office in Henry's Rock - the person inside it and the monitor on display - serves as two things.
It's a taunt. We are being taunted by the Kataru. Kento was the reason Jiro came to America. The way this is set up, he might become a casualty at the hands of the group Jiro had reached out to for help, if not at his own hands. The allies of our allies are turning our backs to us.
But it's also a threat. Someone who used to be our mission control and all-seeing eye has been reduced to a bloodied hostage with a sack on his head. Not only that, someone we had worked for before is proudly standing beside him, not doing anything. The Kataru are sending a threat to us: You cannot even comprehend the force you are up against. We will systematically murder everyone and destroy everything that stands in our path. We also only have two people deciphering the situation - August 'Duke' Lindenhurst and Vernon Locke. And the conspiracy only grows bigger with every step we make.
And despite the change of the general theme, I absolutely love all this lore development.
Hats off to OVERKILL_Wordsmith, holy shit.
(And thank fuck Vlad is nowhere near. Fuck him and his stupid heists. I'm glad he's been completely put away from the recent story developments.)
The final heist involves the whole gang getting caught and brought to the Ketaru base, and Vlad saves the day with a nuke he kept for a rainy day
No. Stop. Don't. Don't give them any ideas involving Vlad.
The expanded storyline has new info
Ketaru is using Murkywater as a front
Locke saw one of the boxes during a trip to Henry's Rock, and the things there made him question working for Murkywater
The Train Heist turret is a Murkywater project
The Continental bought the cars stolen in Car Shop
During Brooklyn 10-10, Bain wanted to meet "someone else," presumably Duke
Read on from here for sources
I can't believe Matt was the mastermind behind everything, the decoy he made in Heat Street was a clever move to remove any suspicion from him.
Finally reached 1000 Achievements tonight. Woo!
Also, this new storyline involves ancient conspiracies and stuff a lot. Duke is very heavily involved in it all. I wonder how the "Create-A-Heister" contest worked now. Way I see it, there are three options:
Overkill saw an archeologist-type character and didn't have a concrete plan for going forward with the plot and found a great avenue for exploration with this character for upcoming events.
Overkill had an idea about future events and either saw August as a great fit through serendipity or they were looking specifically for Indiana Jones-esque characters for use with the upcoming plotline.
Overkill planted Duke so that they could advance the plot.
Vote now on your phones. 3 doesn't make sense because they'd just release him anyway to make the plot work and they wouldn't have to deal with making a fake contest only to make a plant. I think 1 or 2 are more likely. I'm leaning towards 2 because I'm not so sure Overkill wouldn't have a plan like that and they wrote themselves into a corner that easily. I also think that hints towards this were made ages ago further suggesting 2 is most likely.
I don't know about anybody else, but this whole "lore" of Payday 2 kind of bothers me.
I miss just going into a heist and the only motivation was taking shit, and getting paid fat stacks. Now it feels like whenever I do a heist that was made after 2015, most of them sort of extra
motive I have to read into to get extra context to even fully understand what the heck we're there for.
Doesn't feel like I'm a bad man robber anymore, which is honestly what I'd rather prefer.
It would be pretty funny to hear Vlad threaten to go full M O T H E R L A N D on the Kataru with his babushkas though.
Also would be pretty horrifying finding out he actually kept them.
I mean, your still stealing stuff most of the time. Things get kinda boring if it's the same motive over and over. I personally like what Overkill is doing. It makes the game more engaging as we try to unravel this plot that could potentially affect the world. We went from some faceless mooks to actual characters that have a stake in all of this. The characters are still greedy robbers, but now they aren't so one dimensional anymore. That's why we Jiro hunting for his son. That's why we have Duke discovering shit. Because if everything stayed the same that would be boring.
If the extra elements bother you that much I say don't look into them. They really don't mess with the gameplay all that much. Just roleplay that your character is here for the cash and doesn't care about the story behind why they are robbing some place.
Do Duke, Ethan, or Hila have the FWB Heat speech?
Yes, all 3 do.
I kinda want for Vlad to be important in the endgame. I think he will. I like to think that he isn't really an insane man like we all think, but is instead a cold, calculated, and incredibly intelligent businessman who wears eccentricity as a mask. He got released from prison after serving time for relatively petty charges and has been building since. The FBI even believed him to be a model citizen in Hoxton Revenge (though the FBI files website reveals they figured it out.)
He went from stealing tiaras in a tiny jewelry store to dealing nukes within a matter of years. If we're to take this seriously and not just as a joke or a handwaved explanation, that means the man has been working his ass off behind the scenes to make serious connections, including being able to get the intel on Murkywater (a Katara (or whatever the fuck those guys are called, I have no idea where that name come from because I was out of the loop for months) front) without Bain even realizing what was going on. Even Gage had no real Intel to give Bain for Shadow Raid besides knowing that they probably had good stuff , and he's one of the highest-level underground figures within the borders, described by Bain as being "Two steps ahead of everyone else."
Mark my words, the man is deceptively smart and extremely careful, so he will be a key figure in the coming months. Or at least, he should be.
Gage must hire Batman or something if he can get packages in Henry's Rock and Akan's lab
Kento's outfit could be for a Murkywater special enemy, also I hope we don't have to kill Kento. He could be a playable character, Henry's Rock would be like Hoxton Breakout.
I've been struggling to make a Stoic build, simply because I've been so ingrained into my current playstyle (Anarchist Suit, Dragon's Breth IZHMA, Parabellum, I used this to solo the majority of the heists on One Down) and I've been out of the game for so long that I forget everything else about builds. I feel like Stoic could help me to push through the harder One Down heists like Biker, because my current build excels at hunkering down (90% of the heists in the game) where in open ground it's dead meat (I was basically carried through Goat Simulator because it's so mobile, and whenever I got into the car I died.) Stoic could allow me to inch my way forward because of the huge damage buffer.
I'm not sure where to take it, especially in terms of weaponry. I don't like bows because ammo sustainability is top priority for me. Any hot tips?
to be fair I wouldn't mind if he end up coming back in the story in a minor way, like supplying us some weapons for the final battle against the kataru
or maybe, you know, a tank
See, while I don't mind a little story here and there, I think Overkill's way of injecting something is just so abrupt, and messy that it doesn't really flow well. It's always rubbed me off as a bit of
an afterthought, and I've pretty much been against the way they tried to build a story since day 1. I remember the day they released that live action thing, and after watching the very first one,
none of it ever drew me back in again to even want to watch the next. The same with pretty much any of the trailers, and text on their many update site pages.
This isn't a story-oriented game by any measure compared to other games. And I don't play this game constantly, so whenever I come back from a very long hiatus to play some newly released heist, there always seems to be an accompanying video, or wall of text attempting to describe what's going on leading up the heist. The way it's done failed to capture me back then, it still fails to capture me now. And even heist briefings for some of the stuff just are particularly confusing. One of the most unusual choices in particular was the way they couldn't even
really leave well enough alone with the narrative of classic heists. They didn't just have us reliving an old heist, instead they opted to convey that we were actually doing a strikingly similar heist in exactly the same place, nearly the same process, but at a different point in time. It was silly and unnecessary, and the only good thing is it didn't affect gameplay that much, but story wise, irritating.
It's hard to ignore it all when you have mentions and dialogue regarding things in the intros, and middle of the heist, and you basically have no clue what any of it means to warrant discussion.
Things just aren't structured very well, and while I understand there is actually some sort of story line mode in the crimenet interface, I don't know how far it extends, and how well. It certainly does a very good job of keeping itself out of sight to not be found. If I was a new player, I'd say the way the game tries to tell a story isn't very good.
Vlad is a major chatacter, it would be weird for him to simply disappear when important things are going on. Surely he will make a comeback sooner or later.
i wonder how many heists do we have left before the end. I'd say 4-5.
I wonder if they'll get Giancarlo Esposito back as the dentist he probably isn't cheap.
This is precisely why I talked in the past about how I want Payday 3 to have a smaller cast. What's the point of having like a bajillion fucking characters if they're all one-dimensional, only appear once and never get revoiced? I would much rather see a recurring small crew with some character development (which is why I love the intros to Breakin' Feds and Henry's Rock) - and that can pretty much only be achieved with a group of voice actors who are readily available for the job.
If we were to pick returning characters, I would honestly hope for Chains and Locke to get into the next game. Damion Poitier and Ian Russell have said in the past that they loved the role - and it honestly shows. I think the same goes for Hoxton (Pete Gold), but I'm not sure - he would be my top pick for Payday 3 again.
Well, that's one of the reasons for Greg as Cave Johnson's assistant in Portal 2 was scrapped in the main game, having his spot taken by Caroline because Ellen McLain's already exists.
It's nice of The Dentist to test the Payday Gang's capabilities, but since his name is on the notice board in the FBI, does he have involvement in Horton's arrest? Is he gonna be an enemy that needs to be gunned or stabbed?… And also, Jiro and Kento's reunion will definitely not be a happy one... Searching for his son, and then to be murdered by him, or from Kento's side, having to kill his own dad who spent so much time looking for him like Flint for Claus in MOTHER 3…. and then attacks his father…
honestly only the heisters seem to have this problem. Even the dentist came back a few time already
Imagine they do it, imagine he actually fucking saves us by nuking whatever place Ketaru are based at. Comes rescuing us in a Hind blaring loud russian music, just like you can in MGS5
Payday 3 ends up just being a Kojima title. Everything is super dramatic and carries heavy social and cultural commentary. Plot twists are even weirder and more intense, and the homoeroticism is intense.
Having a constantly updated game with a thrilling storyline would be neat. New updates would be like new episodes of a TV show.
And then Hoxton finds the people responsible for fucking up his face.
The new musician they got for the heists does great work, the Henry's Rock track fits in with the first game's tracks
You fucked up my face... wanker.
