One of my friends who hasn't really played many strategy games before decided out of the blue to get XCOM 2 when I told him about the aesthetic and dynamic story-telling etc features
Interesting question came to mind about beginner advice, does anyone still try pull off concealment ambushes? I stopped doing it completely after about my third run in vanilla, because I found too often that it gives Advent a free turn if the overwatch results aren't good enough. I always start with either a high damage shot or a grenade and then flexibly use grenades, abilities and items to kill everyone that moves into cover.
I've found it very useful for the first pod on Gate crasher. You can get 3/4 of your team on a roof, stick the last guy on the ground, put everybody on the roof on overwatch, and use the ground guy to throw a grenade on the first pod to get into los of all of your guys. Then you've got a 50% to kill any given guy with the grenade, and an 85% or so on every remaining shot. It reliably kills that pod, though it's a very specific situation and doesn't work if Advent doesn't path into your team while they're concealed.
I think this might only be reliable on Commander and below though.
why are sectoids so fucking annoying in lw2

If they're giving you a lot of trouble in the early game, then you should definitely pack a flash grenade or two. Disorientation will prevent them from using their psi abilities, effectively making them useless.

Not really useless, as they can still shoot you, and it's pretty painful. Sometimes it's straight up better to give them the opportunity to do some kind of psi bullshit.
So I've bought the WotC + all the DLC, I'm about to start a second playthrough now. Are there any quality of life mods that you guys would consider to be essential that I should install? I'm not looking for any gameplay tweaks, just stuff that improves the interface and makes the gameplay smoother (except maybe longer mission timers, but that option is now built in).
For example, back in vanilla, I basically had to install a mod that would allow you to unequip all weapons with a single button so you could then equip all the best ones on your current team. But that functionality is now built into WotC from what I've heard. Any other stuff like that?

Just remember that when looking for mods, always look for the WOTC versions whenever possible, as not all old mods are compatible, and some outright crash the game.

Gotcha Again, Show Health Values, and Brutal Fix. Gotcha Again adds a lot of useful indicators in the UI, like letting you know when you're going to enter LOS and activate an off-screen pod (provided you've scouted them out before hand, like with a Reaper or used a battle scanner/scanning protocol). It also shows you when you are going to be out-of-range of various AoE attacks, like Blazing Pinions, Codex Psi-Bombs, and the Sectopod's charge up beam cannon thing.
Show Health Values is pretty obvious, just shows a health number instead of forcing you to count up bars. Brutal Fix is an absolute necessity of all of these. A Chosen strength called Brutality causes them to drain the will of any soldier in view of an attack. This is currently bugged. Instead of draining the CURRENT will of your soldiers in view, it drains the TOTAL will. So if your soldiers witness enough attacks, they will eventually be colonels with like 30 will, making them effectively worthless.
Make sure to check the comments om the Mods you watt to use. Therese you can see if the moder is still active.
Thanks, I'll definitely check those out. Also holy crap, that brutal fix looks absolutely necessary, how did that mechanic even make it into the final release so broken.
will never forget the time on the first mission after the tutorial when i had a dude on overwatch, they fired, they missed, and instead hit the car another guy of mine was taking cover on, which then exploded and killed them.
worst fucking ambush ever
Guys, I think I'm falling in love with one of my soldiers. She's actually a competent soldier. She's been gravely wounded 5 times and not once has she been shaken or received a negative trait, she has never panicked, and the only mission she was on where someone died was the Avenger defence (RIP Squaddie King). Until I started sending her on covert ops (because she's the only soldier of higher enough rank) she participated in every mission and always had full will, despite taking 'grave' wounds in the previous mission at times. She was even able to solo the Assassin during one mission where the rest of the squad had to fend off Lost and Advent. She's a combat genius who has almost every available skill unlocked and she hasn't used a single point of XCOM AP.

She's just such a god damn hero. No matter how much I try to artificially inflate the results of other soldiers for training she always manages to be one of the top soldiers in each mission. She's only really beat by resident power couple Ramirez and McKay, who have gone on I think 90% of the missions as a pair. Even Laura Robinson's partner, Jan Meer, is struggling to keep up with her despite being used as my go to role filler he's only just managed to become a captain, and he's a fucking ranger.

Additional icons isn't essential, but very nice, simple , informative and blends in with the rest of UI. Displays enemy health value, type and stats. A bit cheaty in that it marks the loot, but that's easily tweaked in the ini.

112 XCOM AP :dogwow:
The hidden potential with Not created Equally allows for so much cheese, I had a squaddie specialist start with a hacking score of 92 which sits around 140 now so whenever a MEC shows up its usually GG advent.
[editline]10th September 2017[/editline]
On the down side my top-rank sniper still has like 62 aim so I just send her on covert ops 24/7 bc she is useless in the field
112 XCOM AP :dogwow:
I got really lucky and almost all of my starting roster were gifted or genius, so I decided to save the XCOM AP for preparing for hard missions. I'm down to 24 now from prepping a Colonel squad for the Warlock.
Since we are showing soldiers apparently, I'mma show off one of my favorites, Ventress Callheart.
What mods do you have?
Off the top of my head:
Gotcha Again
Evac All
EU Style Rolls
Fair Lost
Skirmisher Capes
Detailed Soldier List
Capnbub's Hat Stuff
I think that's it? All WOTC versions.
The mods I desperately want, are entirely Photobooth centric right now. Landscape posters, manually placing your Soldiers, more poses, backgrounds, fonts and formats. And lastly, a little pop-up that tells you that soldiers pertinent statistics. I don't want to mash Randomise to be reminded of the Operation Name or how many kills said soldiers have together.
Made a few posters to accompany the groups I have. These two are the best by far.

Ya'll batter be ready, here comes ma boy all the way from South Africa.

Before the invasion, he was an African drug lord, notorious for his violent tenancies and decapitating his competitors. Now that Advent has shut down his operations, he joins XCOM to take back his homeland.

And goes right back to being a tyrannical drug lord! I really like the idea of making propaganda from Advent's POV too. Also, what armor is that? Skirmisher? I assume there's a mod that adds it for XCOM trooper use?

Yeah I think it's called 'WotC_Limitless_Armor_Options'. Does the same for templar and reaper outfits. You can make faction soldiers look like xcom and vice versa.

yeah I wanna try and add Injustice 2 victory poses into XCOM2 once Im in mood for it. Making direct port will probably be too difficult because the skeletons are different, but rather just have the poses copied over to XCOM2 human skeleton instead.
here are some more HECU posters

they are some very photogenic fellas
I haven't used Facepunch in like a year and I haven't played this game since I first completed it like a month after release but this expansion is amazing and I'm addicted to it again.
I just wish the tickbox for DLC content when you start a campaign was a little more clear because I didn't play the DLCs for XCOM 2 so I wanted to experience them how they were, and now I'm too far in this campaign to go back.

I made Huey Emmerich a character hoping he'd die pretty earlier but he has become my best soldier and now I don't know how to feel.

Also, how easy is it to animate for this game? I'd love to make some new Photobooth poses or do some actual animation.

Well, since it's a static pose, I suppose it isn't hard to do (there's ~210 bones for each ADVENT/Human/Lost, 40 of them are for the face.)

Oh, I should have been clearer, I meant 'how easy is it to actually implement animations into the game?' I've never really looked at the SDK so.

I think it might be easier than I anticipated. It's just an entry in a ini file. The only problem is, I don't know where or how they're calling the AnimSets, just AnimSequences.
[XComGame.X2Photobooth]
PhotoboothPostProcessChainName=XComEngineMaterials.PostProcess.PostProcess_Photobooth
m_arrAnimationPoses=(AnimationName="Photobooth_GrenadierPoses",AnimationOffset=.25,AnimType=ePAFT_Grenadier,bShowTemplarShardBlades=false)
I'll definitely look into this, thanks. I know next to nothing about modding this game but I can give it a try. I already have a bunch of horrible ideas for joke poses.
