that literally is what long war has always done though.
its supposed to fuck you over. its called long war. you're the commander of an army that predominately uses guerrilla tactics. fighting against the alien overlords.
why on earth did you think that you wouldn't get fucked over by the gameplay mechanics?
I think he meant that the expectations of the game have changed. You're absolutely meant to sprint through missions now if there's a timer, and while they rebalanced shooting to make fights last longer, you're not meant to get sucked into those fights if there's a timer. That's why Gunners get area suppression at Squaddie now, so you can cover your arse while you sprint to the objective. There's a whole lot of mixed expectations as to what LW2 was bringing to the table and Pavonis themselves didn't quite lay it out either, so yes you spend the first five missions saying "What the fuck why am I out of time?" before realising that you're not meant to be fighting, because now it's Metal Gear Xcom.
I quite like it overall, but I definitely think there're some tweaks that could be made. Luckily, I can make them myself in the .ini (When I figure out how without blowing the game up). A big flaw I have is that Guerrilla Ops say what the enemy resistance will be like, after you commit to 100% infiltrating it. I know a lot of people slipped up on that to begin with. I don't see why there isn't a realtime update based on your Infiltration percentage.
the base game had that issue as well. except you could easily cheese it. Pavonis flat out said that they focused on removing cheese strats, since Beagle was also one of the testers iirc.
actually i enjoy their attitude towards their mod. they expect you, the player, to figure out how to play the game to the fullest extent. They just provide the base info you need and just throw you in the deep end.
@cyclocius
Didn't they claim LW2 would be more accessible for casuals? :v:
I think we can all agree that the worst long war 2 mechanic is when it crashes on a mission success.
Never see it crash, the biggest bunch of bullshit I've seen is "your havens are full of faceless but we're not going to tell you that, have fun with negative supplies at supply drops for the first 6 months"
The other stuff I've seen makes reasonable sense to be able to figure out, but that's just straight up "we're going to massively fuck you over because this is your first playthrough, btw fuck you"

Not really a crash, just sometimes it fails to load on a mission complete. oh well, that's why I don't do ironman.

I like that they got rid of Alpha Striking being a requirement, because that was goddamn annoying. What I'm less chuffed about is that they removed it, added in a system that means you're in firefights for longer and then topped off a delicious cake with a layer of icing that nobody asked for, forcing you to stealth through the majority of missions because they're timed and if you pull one pod of Six you can bet there's another one right around the corner. There's a place for both styles of play, but I don't think they're in the same mod.

Play on Rookie like they recommend if you're not used to LW1, and it actually isn't terrible.

Pretty sure Haven infiltrators are mentioned in the XCOM Archive (which the game tells you to check out when it introduces the Haven mechanic after the first mission) and that it can be combatted by assigning a soldier advisor. (Explained in the bit about what assigning a soldier, a scientist and an engineer does)

Just looked at it, there's a single sentence saying soldiers can hunt for ADVENT inflitrators in havens, but without knowing in advance, there's fuck-all way to know that the "unknown source" that's taking 120% of your income is tied to that mechanic at all. Considering how enormously important it is to get rid of them, it's a massive dick move to hide that from the player. They could easily have a dialogue box that pops up saying "our supplies are mysteriously disappearing, there might be a double agent, our soldiers can try to weed them out if you put them as advisors"
I don't think I'll be using LONGWAR 2
I find vanilla xcom to be hard enough, and my playstyle of apocalyptic savescumming to make sure everyone gets out seems at odds with the whole idea of LW2 :v:
I don't understand how you guys are okay with losing troops

Oh we're not okay losing troops. The trick is just that we don't savescum OR let them die.

For me its a carry over of my suicide tactics from the original Xcom UFO defense. Ahh, the good old days where 1 rookie was worth less than the det pack he used to kamikaze a cyberdisk. My friends and I still joke about "acceptable casualties" (I said this whenever I lost a mission or lost a colonel.)
Oh well this is gold, I set up 1 of my soldier to hack the objective on the last turn, and I don't have a Specialist. Get right up to the objective aaaand Nada. No hack icon, I hover over the objective, it's not even showing me what side to hack it from. I select a different soldier from far away, my sniper to be specific, and I see the lock icon on the objective.
Guess what, apparently your soldiers have a chance to have 0 Hack, and instead of that just giving you bad odds at hacking, you straight up can't hack. My sniper on the other side had 1 Hack, and he could apparently do it.
What a good mission that was.
I know how to turn off the not created equal setting in lw2, but how do i turn back on aiming angles? Flanking feels really bad imo without it.

Isn't aiming angles another mod?

lw2 removed it im pretty sure.

No, it was a second wave in EW and was default in Xcom2

It's not that hard if playing on Rookie Difficulty with Red Fog applied only on enemies.
I don't see any point playing the game if you can't handle the losses. It's part of the experience and the feels you get when losing troops or failing mission is very rare in video games, and I love it.

For me, unless some bug or mis-click was the cause, I mostly push on through soldier deaths to make sure I learn from mistakes and to keep the stakes/risk high.
I just had a second Ashes and Temples-mission in LW, lost 4 MSGTs. While it's rough, it's also nowhere near as bad as losing 4 Colonels in vanilla due to how deep your roster ends up being thanks to fatigue.
One thing I'm wondering whether LW2 addresses is the thing where the tactical missions are often piss-easy as long as you're on top of things, but a single screw-up (panic, someone goes down, etc) sends everything to hell in a hand-basket. Does anybody recognize this?
Does the AI in LW2 still do the 'multiple pods walking straight towards the concealed squad they aren't supposed to know about' thing?
my fav part of Xcom is when you get to say shit like "Aw shit there goes Reagan"

I hate nothing as much as those dumb fucking drones, with their stupid fucking stunners god dammit.

I did this during my first playthrough but right now playing an ironman playthrough with commander dif. and I feel like I'm getting PTSD every time someone dies.
I find it incredibly stressful but somewhat liberating at the same time.
Edit: BTW shouldn't the XCOM2 file in the OP be updated considering it still says "it's coming out", "PC exclusive" and "HYPE"?
Can someone please explain to me why when an enemy gets revealed on their turn, not only do they move twice but fire as well? This is seriously starting to get on my nerves.
