Now that we know Chloe was [sp]romantically involved with Rachel, doesn't it make it a little weird that she passionately kisses Max very shortly after discovering Rachel's body?[/sp]
that's not exactly new. we knew that since the original game
It's been so long since I played it I can't remember, I just figured they were best friends.
Does the game address at all the fact that Rachel is a massive fucking piece of shit?

Kiiiiinda?

I fucking hated [sp]Elliot[/sp]. I completely disregarded everything he said.

If you [sp]read his poetry in his dorm room you can see he basically intends to murder-rape Chloe (in that order) and then take himself out.[/sp]
[sp]I honestly can't call Warren creepy anymore after that shit with Elliot.[/sp]
[sp]I honestly can't call Warren creepy anymore after that shit with Elliot.[/sp]
[sp]Warren's just a good-natured kid with social awkwardness. Eliot is a physically violent protorapist.[/sp]
[sp]no, it doesn't even cover it. the game only covers the events of how chloe and rachel met. it ends before showing cheating on chloe or ANY of the shit she did. not only does it not address it, it doesn't even show it at all. it's covering the wrong timespan entirely. the game ends in 2010, 3 years before Rachel's disappearance
it definitely suffers from the star wars prequels syndrome of focusing on the most boring span of time int he narrative. they could have given us a game about how things went south with rachel, how she cheated w frank and later jefferson (even bringing jefferson to the junkyard) but INSTEAD it's a game about a bunch of entirely new drama we didn't even know about that didn't even need to happen. it absolutely and completely glosses over every single thing we might want evaluated upon or that might be important to LiS's story, instead choosing an entirely new and unconnected narrative[/sp]
What a fucking waste, Rachel is INTENTIONALLY LAURA PALMER. She's supposed to be a massive facade hiding someone who is completely broken, where in Twin Peaks it is [sp]horrible visions, molestation, attempted possession and an overall life of problems[/sp] so she puts up a massive front while basically trying to kill herself and get as much pleasure as possible to get her away from herself, Rachel is supposed to be the same way, to the point where they start bashing you over the head with it with stuff like referencing Meals on Wheels.
She [sp]Uses Chloe intentionally, just like she uses everyone else[/sp]
Deck Nine didn't get that... did they?
not only does it not address it, it doesn't even show it at all. it's covering the wrong timespan entirely. the game ends in 2010, 3 years before Rachel's disappearance
I have to disagree. We already know what happened with Rachel and how she disappeared in the first game. I'd much rather see why Chloe became as infatuated with Rachel as she was, and this game did a great job with that. No matter how you play it, it's an affecting relationship that manages to feel even more raw than Max and Chloe's. I made sure to play the game with several people with no prior LiS experience, and it's safe to say that it stands up pretty strong as a standalone story. I loved how they managed to tie up William, David, Steph/Mikey/Drew, Rachel's parents and even Eliot. I wish we got a bit more out of Nathan/Stephanie or Skip (even though he pretty much said his piece in ep2), but overall very good for just three episodes.
As far as how well it serves as fanservice, well . . .
[sp]They certainly didn't stress how manipulative Rachel is in my playthrough, but I think that is in large part due to how clouded that becomes if you're more than friends, plus how that decision is pushed FAR more heavily than it was in the original. If anything, Rachel is TOO good at disguising her motivations from Chloe. It's only an issue if you were expecting to see that after playing the original, and Deck Nine very intentionally made it hard to believe by making Eliot, a guy with obvious ulterior motives, the only person pointing out that fact. I'm playing again just as friends, and so far Rachel's exploitation of Chloe seems a bit more obvious, but that could also be due to the fact that I've already beaten the game once. I picked the lie ending (as I imagine most did), and I get the feeling that it was the "bad" ending, just like how Sacrifice Arcadia Bay was in the original. You shield Rachel from the harsh reality of her mother, and she does the same for you in regards to how she uses you. I wonder if anything new comes to light if you choose the truth.[/sp]
Steph is the best new character. I'm pissed [sp]I wasn't able to get the tabletop scene in episode 3. Oh well, next playthrough.[/sp]
idk but my first immediate decision is to [sp]tell her the truth[/sp]. She's an adult, she can decide how she wants to ruin her own life.
I think [sp]saying that Rachel intentionally used Chloe vitally misses the point. I've known people like Rachel. I've been hurt by people like Rachel. They don't know they're doing it, most of the time. Whether that absolves them or condemns them further is entirely your decision, I guess, but for me it just makes it cold. Makes me no longer care about it. All I can do in the face of it is slump my shoulders.[/sp]
I'm sorry this happened, and I agree. She's...hungry. And nothing satisfies her.
[sp]What matters is whether or not you've got the gumption to at least keep them on the straight and narrow. Not through control or whatever, but just by being a good influence. Sadly Chloe, like all of us, is flawed, and wasn't able to help Rachel avoid seeking out more and more.
And when they've given you their all, some stagger and fall,
after all it's not easy
banging your heart against some mad bugger's wall.[/sp]
Just Played through the Entire game for the first time (Before the Storm to clarify), I didn't think this would happen but it honestly moved me a lot more than the original, but I think the Third episode was a bit of a let down, it didn't have the same feel as the rest of the game to me.
As I said the game was much more emotional for me than the original, not quite sure why but I think it has a bit to do with how they portrayed Chloe, and I honestly like the new VA a lot more than the old one. I also liked the Rachel-Chloe dynamic a lot more than the Max-Chloe one for some reason.
Going to replay LiS come the new year, then replay BtS with different choices, see what changes.
I just got spoiled on the ending of BtS.
That... last bit feels like a weird last minute middle finger.
???
I don't know what is to be expected to be the end of BtS? No way they can connect with the first game since the story is 3 years apart. They simply chose to tell a different story.

The game fucking ends [sp]With A phone call in the dark room. The first game EXPLICITLY ESTABLISHES YOU DON'T GET SIGNAL IN THE DARK ROOM. ON PURPOSE. MULTIPLE TIMES.[/sp]
It's just a last minute, really awful attempt to elicit an emotion and it's really, really lazy and bad.

Oh
Well that's one hella oversight
I've been thinking about the main series, and I like how it can be seen as a message about how getting all the secrets to succeed in life won't make you happy, it's the experience of those happy and sad moments that changes you and makes you wise.

I agree that this was the intent, but its really undermined by how [sp]you're encouraged to undo everything, reverse the main threat before it happens ocarina of time style, and remove all the consequences of all the mistakes you made faffing about in the space-time continuum. Broadly speaking you're doing the exact same thing to solve the problem as you did to cause the problem in the first place.[/sp]

It would be undermined if Max didn't learn anything from the experience, but she clearly does.
I give Before the Storm a 7/10.
It is on point on it's philosophical perspective on harsh truths and convenient lies. Even the ones we love lie to us.
However[sp]they skimped out on various key moments off camera and never really answered if Rachael really had fire powers or if it was symbolic.
Also the socio-political messaging shoehorned in Eliot's scene, was very ham fisted.[/sp]
I hope the bonus level is actually good.

Hannah Telle can actually pull off a pretty good Max cosplay

5 more days until we see the last of her
I just beat the last episode (not farewell).
Wow what a whole bunch of nothing.
Honestly I didn't expect much out of it other than a nostalgia trip. It still made me tear up despite seeing the ending coming a mile away.
I'm more excited about this.

I only just now played it because I had to mentally prepare myself.
I still wasn't ready.
as someone who put 200 hours into the main game and has yet to play before the storm...
it was way too fucking short. i mean, what the fuck. that wasn't even half an episode of the original game.
i have a feeling it would've been much more fulfilling if DONTNOD themselves made it
..sigh. it was good and all, I was just expecting so much more
[editline]6th March 2018[/editline]
I take it back, that wasn't comparable to half an episode of LiS, more like a quarter
