Every time I try to play the side games like Chain of Memories or Birth by Sleep, I always end up just quitting not even 2 hours in. There's just something off about them that I can't be bothered to play them unlike the main games. CoH is different in that I genuinely hate it for a lot of reasons though.
I have kind of a same problem. They're so gimmicky that it's hard to alter my mindset around them, and Birth By Sleep pretty much punishes you painfully for trying to play aggressive with normal attacks. By the end games, you have to cheese or CoM and BBS alike just beat you into a fine paste; if you don't like their mechanics, then it's hard to get someone past the fundamental aspects.
Birth By Sleep is no "side game" by any stretch of the imagination as far as the overall plot is concerned and its has a different and solid gameplay on its own (not without some very annoying flaws though). I'd actually regard it as the ultimate "essential side Kingdom Hearts game" and would have a very hard picturing anyone coming into the series today and understanding a damn thing without having played Birth By Sleep first ot at the very least read a synopsis beforehead. Chain of Memories was instead the worst Kingdom Hearts period till RE: Coded came along. Granted, some people may find the card gimmick entertaining, but what you are playing is basically a portable version of the original Kingdom Hearts with boss fights ranging from pathetically easy to nightmarish difficult and a plot which really keeps going because everyone involved is a fucking moron. Oh, and you are goaded in clearing the game twice too, once with Sora and one with Riku. Still, you gotta play it because else many plot elements from Kingdom Hearts II will make zero sense to you, especially the very beginning
I'd really like Birth By Sleep if on Proud mode every boss didn't have an instant kill move that can stun lock you. Five bosses in and there's just attacks that should be named 'you lose'. While it wouldn't be a problem, most of them are super telegraphed, there are some which you have to DPS race or find a way to get out of a normal state or else the entire arena dies.
There isn't any fucking internal logic anymore in this series. I just beat Birth By Sleep. This game is a fucking full game plot hole. Everything introduced makes the base games make less sense.
This game is a fucking full game plot hole. Everything introduced makes the base games make less sense.
Could you elaborate on this a bit?
Mickey is at the final fight. [sp]How does he not immediately go and kill Terra-Xehanort?[/sp] Why does [sp]Xehanort not even change his fucking name, yet no one is suspicious of this guy who is also evil in the future with the exact same plan.[/sp] If [sp]Ansem and Xemnas are Xehanort's Nobodies and Heartless. Why the fuck do they not look like him?[/sp] Why [sp]Does Xehanort get restored in DDD but not Terra?[/sp] Why is [sp]Terra not in an asylum. Dude murders his own father figure because he doesn't spend literally half a second to think about anything he does then blames Xehanort for all of his problems. Seriously how is the writing that bad? Dude goes to Neverland and listens to a PIRATE WHO IS CURRENTLY LIVING IN A GIANT SKULL and agrees to kill a CHILD[/sp] Why [sp]Has no one seen a keyblade by the main series even though three random fuckwits (Well, five) are going around doing meaningless trash including hanging around in a THEME PARK, less than a decade earlier? Including characters who explicitly have never seen a keyblade in KH1 and don't know what it is?[/sp] It is explicitly, EXPLICITLY stated [sp]In KH1 that the Keyblade chooses its own master. Nope. You're given one.[/sp] What's the point of [sp]Sora earning the keyblade during KH1 by being worthy if he always deserved one?[/sp] The entire Venn [sp]Becoming Roxas sorta thing is fucking stupid, because he's supposed to be different and an equal to Namine. Nope. He looks different because he's an entirely different character? Not like the final shot of KH2 showing both of them at peace was to show how they were the same?[/sp]
Well, let's see what I can break down. [sp]Xehanort is the one in control of Terra's body, Terra's just sort of a prisoner along for the ride even when they're restored. Sora literally was never chosen for a Keyblade, he didn't go through the same rite that Riku (and Kairi by accident) did, and ended up the most suitable wielder when Riku went to the darkness instead and then earned it for real later on; Ventus being inside him just helped the choice, this is made clear later in the series when a Data-Sora manages to get his own Keyblade through will rather than just use an artificial copy of Sora's. Keyblades themselves seem to specifically choose their wielder, it's just a rite can make you a candidate by another Keyblade Wielder; seeing as Riku's later-produced Keyblade fits his darkness powers, presumably that means Riku could've gotten something other than the Kingdom Key were it not for Destiny Islands being literally destiny. And Roxas is like a hybrid of Ventus and Sora with probably some Vanitas in there too, but grows on his own character too as DDD outright throws all subtlety out the window in the Nobodies getting their own hearts.[/sp]
are we really putting spoilers for a game that came out eight years ago?
OH and don't fucking get me started on the fucking Time Travel in DDD. Just, straight up fuck anyone interested in KH3 who hasn't played BBS and DDD. Also that's not how you fucking pronounce χ, and no that's not clever, that's fucking stupid, because with your -wrong- pronunciation, you've made anyone without subtitles not understand what the fuck you're talking about. Better yet, how do the characters themselves recognize who is saying χ and who is saying key?
Mickey is at the final fight. [sp]How does he not immediately go and kill Terra-Xehanort?[/sp]
He was currently helping Aqua and, to an extent, Ventus and once he saw [sp]Aqua basically fainted due to the explosion created by the X-Blade destruction and Ventus basically comatosed he decided to prioritize getting both of them the fuck out of there[/sp]
If [sp]Ansem and Xemnas are Xehanort's Nobodies and Heartless. Why the fuck do they not look like him?[/sp]
The games seem to threat [sp]Master Xehanort[/sp] (currently [sp]taking refuge in Terra's heart[/sp]) and [sp]"Terranort"[/sp] (as in [sp]Terra's body possessed by Xehanort's heart[/sp]) as two completely different entities, with Ansem and Xemnas being [sp]the Heartless and Nobody of Terranort respectively[/sp]. As to why [sp]Master Xehanort would be restored by the destruction of them, since they aren't strictly his alternate selves, I speculate it has to do with the whole possession thing[/sp]
Why [sp]Does Xehanort get restored in DDD but not Terra?[/sp]
It's currently speculated that [sp]Terranort was also restored, only off-screen, and he will be one of the thirteen Darkness gathered by the freshly restored Master Xehanort in Kingdom Hearts III[/sp]. Regarding your other points, I either agree with them or think they are a natural consequences of the huge retcons between the games the series is infamous for
are we really putting spoilers for a game that came out eight years ago?
There's games that came out far longer than that and people will throw a hissy-fit if you don't spoiler tag it. Shin Megami Tensei Megathread is one of them.
Maybe they're overrated but these videos pretty much give me a genuine laughter considering how much i played Kingdom Hearts.
I can't stress how actually stupid Terra is. He actually listens to a Pirate with a hook for a hand who lives in a skull that he should kill a child.
Terra might not be a very good character, but he has a damn good character design. He looks like berserker armor Guts crossed with a judge from Final Fantasy 12, and he has the best Keyblade design in the whole series imo. Not so much a fan on the unarmored version though, the pants always looked weird and out of place to me. Love the gauntlet though.
It helps they introduced him in a much badass way.
Why doesn't Ansem look like him again? Because Xemnas/Xehanort looks exactly like him but older.

I still don't get why they have to make the story so complicated.
Because fuck you play all the games. That's the only explanation. BBS's is pretty bad, but DDD, which might as well be KH2.5, is fucking nonsense
I still don't get why they have to make the story so complicated.
Tetsuya Nomura, the main man behind the series, firmly believes that a good story should be about as many odd and unexpected twists and turns as possible in order to always keep the audience on its toes and surprise it. Hence why, while the original Kingdom Hearts displayed a pretty linear but nonetheless enjoyable story, following games aren't considered worthy till they pull off ten huge retcons at a time or so
I can't play Chains of Memories. I thought i could since i remember finishing it on the GBA version but it felt pretty boring now.
Hey SE, feel free to redesign the X-Blade and pretend that it never looked like it did in BBS. Seriously it's fucking hilariously ugly and looks like a joke that a fan made.
Holeefuck Dream Drop Distance is fucking weird. If you have to have separate gameplay things to explain the story and mechanics, then just fucking fix your introduction. Like, this feels like a joke. "Here's the same tutorial twice in a row because now you're playing as Riku. What's that? Didn't click the button fast enough? Well I'll automatically skip an important cutscene"
To be honest I like Dream Drop Distance mainly for the excellent choice of worlds and the abundance of boss fights. I really like boss fights.
The combat is interesting at least
A new trailer about Kingdom Hearts III has been released at D23 Expo Japan 2018 Basically: [sp]1) Marluxia/Lauriam is back. It's unclear if he's part of Xehanort's posse or not. 2) More gameplay and cutscenes from the Toy Story, Monster Inc. (now confirmed) and Tangled worlds, also showcasing the bigger levels, the new emphasis on parkour-like moves and new limits and summons (including the Dream Eaters). 3) Vanitas is back as well against all odds, and he's certainly part of Xehanort's 13 darkness(es?)[/sp] Not bad at all. [editline]Today[/editline] Additional trailers with few little scenes added, mostly about Riku's new look
[sp]Ariel is now a summon, I guess her world is out[/sp]. So far I enjoyed moreof this trailer than the last ones since it showed waaay more than new stuff and story. I read somewhere that we may have a final release date next E3.
I read somewhere that we may have a final release date next E3.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves now
Let's not get ahead of ourselves now
KHInsider tweeted this live from the event while it was happening. E3 will have the release date.
