S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Series Megathread: Maybe someday mods releasing edition

Honestly if someone wants to play with mods on their first playthrough they can go right ahead, but they shouldn't come back here or someplace else and complain about the game being shitty when all along it was the mod that caused that issue.
It's common sense to play a game without mods your first time unless it's a special case where the game literally is broken without a community patch of sorts. STALKER doesn't really suffer from that in my opinion aside from Clear Sky being fairly rough.
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl's actually a good game imo. I don't think it needs mods on a first playthrough.
Individuals seem to all have different experiences with SoC, for example, I've been able to get the documents out of the Agroprom institute with the stealthy approach.
Whilst everyone else get spotted by that one guy in the watchtower.
god this game is buggier than i remembered

So, I'm thinking about going crazy and going with a soup mod.
Is STALKERSOUP still the recommended soup mod to go for, or should I go for for something like NS DMX DKZ?

I personally still love stalkersoup, it's way more stable than it ever was if you get the standalone program one. Just save often and be ready to be super confused by some of the shoddier translations. I dunno if they have a discord but the steam forum that used to have most of the explanations for rookies seems to have gone kaput.

After a bit of testing I concluded that killing the poltergeist over the corpse on the stairs caused the problem, you can see the corpse of a soldier suddenly stretching and colliding with everything around after I kill the poltergeist

They're not bugs they're unplanned features.
I had a really vivid and interesting dream last night and I'm pretty sure it was STALKER, or at least that's how I interpreted it.
It started simply enough. Someone had put a price on my head, and I was being followed by this really slick and professional bandit who wore sunglasses and a gold chain. I knew I'd seen him before but at the time I was unaware he was pursuing me. Near the entrance of a friendly hideout, I got into a brief skirmish with a pair of unrelated noobie bandits but I just booked it for the hideout instead of continuing the fight.
It was inside of a massive industrial warehouse. The shelter was inside a well-secured bunker in the basement. There was an implication that there was a similar hideout for bandits nearby as well. I helped a half-drunk stalker close the heavy metal door behind me. They had a homemade but sophisticated computer security system protecting the place and sealing the doors.
I think one of the bandits had managed to disguise themselves and get in because before I knew it, there was an explosion and a huge firefight broke out. In the midst of the chaos, I tried to hide myself because the bandits were winning. But I felt a sharp jab in my neck and turned to see who'd attacked me, and it was the bandit with the sunglasses and gold chain. I pulled a hypodermic needle out of my neck in horror and threw it to the floor where it clattered loudly. The bandits had won and the firefight was over.
The effect of whatever I'd been injected with took hold immediately, and I became dizzy and exhausted. As the slick bandit was taunting me and monologuing, like any good villain ought to, he got sideswiped by a massive bloodsucker. A fresh pump of adrenaline mitigated the effect of the sedative and I ducked away behind a big pile of debris and junk. I could hear the bandits getting slaughtered by several bloodsuckers and I knew I was next.
I was fighting to stay conscious so I could defend myself, but I'd lost my gun in the melee and had to improvise. I got behind a long table stood on its shorter side that the stalkers had been throwing knives and sharpened objects at, so they were all sticking out of the table's surface. I had the presence of mind to turn it so that the pointy ends were facing toward incoming opponents. I waited and hoped they wouldn't find me, but they did. The first one was the biggest, the muscled monstrosity that had made short work of the slick bandit. It roared and sprinted at me, only to impale itself on the table. The force of the impact had sent me to the ground and destroyed the table, but the bloodsucker had run away. At that point, I passed out.
When I woke up, I was surrounded by figures. They assured me I'd be okay, that I was still under the effects of the sedative and was exhausted from the fight. My vision soon cleared, and I was shocked to see that these were not people, but sentient and catlike humanoids. The cat mutants had taken care of the other bloodsuckers and resealed the hideout. At this point though, things got weird. They couldn't figure out how to work the stalkers' VHS and TV, so I helped them with it. They told me to stay with them and recuperate by watching movies and television shows. They turned into actual cats that could talk but I didn't question it - dream logic.
The dream briefly changed into something completely unrelated and then I woke up. It was almost disappointing because 85% of it was like a goddamn movie. I wish I'd gotten to experience some kind of climax or conclusion to the plot, especially with the cat mutants.
fuck off lad
it's the same way as with any game, it should always be played with at most bug fix mods and that's it.
Oh fuck off, "lad". I said play it with mods and you're saying play it with bug fix "mods". What's the fucking difference beyond your attitude?
ZRP plus textures should be the bare minimum for SoC anybody who thinks otherwise is stupid.
Edit: I will say you have to be a special kind of (cruel) fuck to abandon anyone to vanilla bullet sponginess. That shit shouldn't be forced on anyone, especially when we know better all these years later. But hey, purity and all that.
Shit guys, looks like we're stupid

The definition of stupidity is ... playing without Ziggy's mod.

Get out of here, tourist.

There are no tropical islands in the zone.
For a first time playthrough, I'd recommend either straight vanilla based on versions 1.0004 - 1.0006, ZRP, or AA2 (which is essentially just Vanilla+).
Playing without mods at all is encouraged, but not really required for the "true" experience anymore. As long as your first playthrough isn't Complete's easy mode, or the "GET OUT OF HERE STALKER" experience that something like AMK provides, you should be fine.

As someone who came to the series later than most (played my first time in 2012), I played vanilla and just got some retextures, no ZRP.
Maybe it's because of coming off of fallout but I feel like the enemies weren't that bad, at the start the weapons weren't good, but all you had to do was save AP ammo for the tougher guys. Also the later weapons actually feel better than other guns, which is not something I can say is true of most mods, which i feel added a sense of reward that rebalancing damage doesn't really replicate.
but I guess I'm just stupid for having enjoyed vanilla
There's honestly nothing wrong with straight vanilla. Yeah, you can hit up bugfix mods, but it's like the people who say "wow to play Elder Scrolls: (whatever) you HAVE to get ALL the unofficial patches right away because wow, if you do this really obscure thing it breaks a non-consequential side quest kinda maybe!!!"
I did every STALKER vanilla first and ran into no (major) issues that I can remember? That includes Clear Sky on release day. I mean ok sure, on Clear Sky near the end, all the AI couldn't cross a bridge and I had to physically jump up and down on it because the door-physics hadn't dropped it low enough for the AI to consider it cross-able, but that's just part of the Eastern European gaming experience. :v:
unless the game is either crashing or borderline unplayable you dont need every unofficial patch/bugfix mod but if you want dl them
i recommend playing a bit and if the small things bother you install whatever patch you want

I stealthed it once with my knife and silenced PB in vanilla SoC. I have never been able to do it again modded or otherwise.

I wanna be excited for that but the devs are so quiet and shady about it, it puts me off.

Shady how? Saw some feedback and footage it seems to progress decently enough just needs the correct tweaking.
I'd consider rushing it out of the gate shady which they seem to have no intention of doing.

I'll admit i only loosely follow the development of this but from what i've seen they've been quiet about the development almost to a fault, to the point where there's people on the forums are getting upset about it. Their community managers haven't been helping much either, people have been asking for months when the beta was gonna be and it's inevitably a vague "they said summer" before the thread is locked.
Maybe shady was a bit strong of a word, but still. And apologies for the late rating, i misclicked.
Waiting patiently for the open / non-pre-order-only beta. :class:
Hey TKGP. I'm probably late but I couldn't find download link anywhere. " Item Map Generator "? It shows every item-in-open on levels? Sorry if I sound rude or something.
