CoC's new thirdperson in 1.5 is easily my favorite feature
True. This give some fresh experience to the game, but sadly stalker have really old and a bit crappy animations so for most of time its really annoying to watch when you move/shoot/reload. Its a bit sad that for all those years, all those people who actually managed to work with stalker SDK spend time doing 1000000 versions of weapons instead of work a bit with character models and animations... Yes, we have new NPC models, but its just copy/paste from other games. It would be just nice to have original snork or zombie with more details and better idle animations, or dog that dont have paws like bricks or chimera that have just few animations and dont have model like it was ripped from some 1997 game... Im not saying that current animations are really ugly, but its really hard to work with Stalker SDK and models/animations and all those people who managed to work with it spend time doing millions of version of AK or implement 10000 guns from other games, like we dont have enough good guns in stalker...
CoC's new thirdperson in 1.5 is easily my favorite feature
Whilst this looks really well implemented and I'm not trying to knock CoC in anyway, I never understood the appeal of the third person shooter genre. They've generally felt really awkward to aim and shoot, less immersive or straight up immersion breaking, and introduce that classic 'Tom Clancy camera' exploit of standing against a wall and rotating the camera to look around corners (an issue with ARMA derived competitive games *cough* DayZ *cough* PUBG *cough*). I get the feeling the only reason people specifically select a third person option in singleplayer games (e.g. Elderscrolls) is because "I like how my character looks" or "It feels like I am watching a movie" or "It makes me feel powerful". I wonder if there is also a direct correlation between people who prefer third person and using inverted vertical aim on a joystick. Any thoughts guys? I'm just curious and want to understand why people prefer it.

Also, third-person camera is less disorienting because of how you can clearly view your characters boundaries and surroundings, and no up-close objects (weapons or scenery) obscure that view. First-person being the end-all in terms of immersion isn't a given; some people may find the inherent problems of first-person view detrimental to their immersion, at which point third-person becomes the superior choice both for immersion and visual appeal.
Any thoughts guys? I'm just curious and want to understand why people prefer it.
depends really, in STALKER I look for the coolest rifles whereas in Fallout 4 (which I play almost exclusively in 3rd person) I look for the coolest outfits :v:
Would be really neat if someone figured out how to stick the third person camera to your face so that you have visible legs.
if it would help the source code for this similar mod for skyrim is available.

In 1.5 though, it just feels really well implemented and a fresh take on STALKER that it honestly caught me off guard how much I enjoy using it. Unfortunately the camera still can clip through walls, but since all it takes to toggle is a single button press I've been using it out in the open world and it really is refreshing.
Even to this day, STALKER is a wonderful and immersive experience, despite the jank. I was playing CoC Monday night, look at the clock, it's 9:30 pm, okay, 30 more minutes then I go to bed. Look at the clock again, it's 3:00 am. The zone has claimed another life. I've also introduced 2 friends to the game, and one of them is already lost to the zone. I do agree the game could use some new animations for Stalkers, especially the run animation, though the naruto arms never gets old. A-life also continues to be a mystifying system. Like when an entire compound of loners is harassing one bandit.
Did that guy melee the other Loner behind him?
The funky jogging is definitely from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl has a bindable third person mode - you can use that to get a general look at the game's animation. Keep in mind it's pretty much unplayable however
Would be really neat if someone figured out how to stick the third person camera to your face so that you have visible legs.
I have to ask; is lack of visible legs in first person something that really bothers people? It's the opposite for me, I find wonky walking animations that don't really fit with the arms/guns viewmodel quite jarring. First thing I did in CoC was turn off the player shadow since all it did was reveal how stiff the character looks when walking around with the weapon holstered.

Sort of like gas mask overlays or exchanging HUD elements for items on the playermodel, they demonstrate attention to detail and make the game more enjoyable if immersion is desired (which it is for me).

Or does that still outweigh the drawback? I really like gas mask overlays and stuff like the wristwatch in the Metro games, but it's the opposite with legs. If I look for something on the floor in real life don't pay attention to my legs (much like how you can always see your nose but don't notice it unless you think about it), so finding them in-game is immersion-breaking for me.
I like it when they bother. And if I could live all this time and not be bothered by STALKER's animations, some legs won't ruin anything. Having looked at the animation cycles for mutants and npcs in the SDK, I find them quite impressive for their age. It's just that only a handful come across in gameplay.
Lost Alpha still has player legs. They're buggy but it does work to some degree. I'm not a fan though.
So I finally got SoC to work. Is there any recommended mods for a first playthrough? I know to play vanilla but I imagine there's a few bug fix or quality of life mods I should get

Is there any way to get CoP/CoC to run well with a controller? I don't have a desk and trying to use a mouse and keyboard with my current set up is hard on my back

You'll likely have to spend some time tweaking it and It'll be janky as all hell but you can get it working.

When you are wearing gear like load bearing vests and a uniform its kind of hard to not notice things when you look down. If its one properly the body model should be there and the animations should be good enough to not look strange. Its kind of best on games that dont keep your head looking straight forward though, like ArmA.
Does anyone know how to install the armor upgrade items you can find on the bodies of dead NPCs in Last Day?
Run the games through Steam and let Steam handle controller mapping. Here's some of what I did with the Steam Controller and the Steam Controller mapping software for STALKER, some nifty tricks are possible: https://imgur.com/a/NonXd. I went back to the mouse and keyboard eventually, but that was partly due to not being willing to invest the time to master the Steam Controller itself. You don't need a Steam Controller, the Steam Controller mapping software works with and improves most controllers. I'm running the Dolphin Wii emulator under Steam just so I can use the otherwise unsupported DS4 controller with it. As a bonus it lets me use the DS4's touchpad as an additional 4-way button pad. Edit: Turns out I'd already switched to an Action Layer based config. Updated that imgur post and added some more detail. Published those bindings to Steam under call of Pripyat if anyone wants to use them as a base for their own binding: steam://controllerconfig/41700/1259392752
You know what's funny about Complete mods? They make gameplay easier thanks to the worse AI, healing bandages and else but I always forget to mention (or anyone trying to convince first comers to not use them) something they do in vanilla way: They keep bullet sponge enemies. That's somewhat ironic.
Does anyone know how to install the armor upgrade items you can find on the bodies of dead NPCs in Last Day?
Metal plates? They go to the artifacts slots.
We need some more classic stalker videos.
Well if you insist...
So uhh I got S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl from Facepunchmas raffle, booted up the game, and first thing I managed to achieve was, well... Leading a military patrol into the camp (due to not noticing they're enemies till last second) and a boar (that was right near the road). On one hand, it got two random Stalkers and Wolf killed, and on another hand, I got a sawn-off shotgun, three AKMs, five Ppms, munitions and some food supplies. Is this a common occurence? I feel like I went wrong somewhere during this :vs:

Wolf no :((
