I do not buy gold, and my password is the same as it's been for years-- I don't think I've been hacked (but it is a possibility, there were a lot of level 1's I didn't recognize on my account).

I didn't buy gold. I didn't even LOG ONTO my character before it was banned. Whatever got me banned, it was not something I did recently. Hell, this might be some random safety precaution Blizzard uses when it re-activates "suspicious" characters (IE, characters that have not been touched for years, characters playing on a SoR or similar free trial, etc)

You know what? Fuck it. I'm not going to be able to convince you that this isn't completely my fault. I may have been hacked, but not recently-- I do weekly virus scans (Avast) that come up with nothing and I use spybot S&D even more frequently. Honestly, I think this is just some stupid bureaucratic error on Blizzard's fault, one they'll fix whenever they get around to it (IE a few days like the email says).

Is it common for hackers not to change the passwords on accounts they've hacked? As far as I can tell, none of my recovery info was even touched. My password certainly wasn't.

I found a lot of level 1 characters I don't remember making all over various servers-- if I was hacked, they probably used those characters to make one of those "body art" ads I've seen all over Ogrimmar. They may have also deleted my main character (I don't know why though). This is all speculation, and I'm still not sure how my account would have been hacked, and when.
