Games need to adopt something like how mirror's edge works, hold the space key down so get more fluid motion leaping over an obstacle.
Having to repeatedly tap a key at right moment to get over an obstacle really annoys me or the wait for the pop up text saying you can now jump over this object.
This. Instead of jumping and crouching and jumping, get some momentum, press jump over some small ledge, and BAM you're doing a triple somersault towards the next checkpoint.
Jumping is prevalent in most games around, but why? Think about it, how often to you jump throughout the day? Yet whenever jumping is not included, you feel incredibly restricted. Why and how has this mindset developed?
I bunny hop everywhere, it's a great display of physics by showing momentum carrying me forward at ridiculous speeds, beats driving any day.
To get to higher locations.
Goldeneye didn't have jumping. Remember when The World is Not Enough came out and had jumping? Yeh. Remember which 007 game was better.
(Note: I think The World is Not Enough was a fantastic game. But Goldeneye was better.)

the world is not enough was so fun to play with friends against the bots
Dolphin Dive in black ops is good if you want to annoy people for constantly being a faggot and jumping out of windows.
But I can't play a game that doesn't include jumping, you may think it's useless but it will help you somewhere.

Press A to say apple. :v:
Legend of Zelda series didn't allow you to jump unless you were about to fall off a cliff.
It's a popular series, they must have done something right.
Maybe Being busy with Redeads?
I still haven't played a single game without a jump feature.
Oh wait.

ArmA 2's lack of jumping was especially disappointing.

It had jumping? I can't believe I didn't notice it.

:smug:
My favorite use of jumping is finding holes in the map, or places you shouldn't be able to get to.
Just because a game has jumping doesn't mean it isn't restricted anyway. It all depends on the game.
I do dislike platforming segments in single-player FPSes, though. It's one thing if it's got a reasonable explanation (Antlions in Half-Life 2), but it's another if you're walking around the secret base of the enemy and for one reason or another they have a bunch of ledges you just happen to be able to jump up to in order to progress, for no discernible reason. Also when the game engine doesn't support said platforming and makes it a giant pain in the ass.

What the fuck is up with your binds? Or are you using a controller on a console or something?

More relevant, why is jumping removed from some games? (E.g.: Bulletstorm)
Answer: Because joystics can't handle too much buttons to press so they removed jumping.
Why can you jump? To appreciate Jiggleboned boobs, of course!
Seriously though, I would feel naked without it. Playing through Ocarina of Time, the entire game I was going WHY CAN'T I JUMP?. I don't know why, but it really irritated me.
I don't mind games without the ability to jump
I do find it funny when games try to be realistic yet you can still jump around like a complete moron firing your gun in all sorts of directions while trying to not get shot in the head
"Here, get on this ledg-- OH WAIT."

HEY FOXTROTONENINER WE NEED YOU TO FIND A RAMP SO WE CAN ADVANCE THE SQUAD OVER THIS HEDGE.

..playstation? :raise:
It's to simulate a lot of things you can't do, like climb ledges, get over fences etc.
There's no button to do that shit in most FPSes, so you jump to do it, it still kinda feels like you're doing the action, your mind fills in the blanks.
Most cover based shooters don't have a jump button because they do have a button to do those things (also those games suck ass, I hate cover based shooters, takes away from your control of the game, you're in charge, not the animation.)
RnL Mod for HL2 had a good jumping system. While standing stationary there's no jump, but you can sprint then jump, and get a pretty good leap.
You can climb over walls, so there's really no reason to have jumping anyways. As long as you can climb/leap, stationary jumping isn't really needed anyways.
Think about it, how often to you jump throughout the day?
How many times do you do anything you do in a game throughout the day
God you're so dumb
OP we don't jump often in real life because whenever we need to get up a high ledge we'll either pull ourselves up with our hands or take an abnormally large step
Games often don't have that level of control so you have to jump to get up a similar ledge

Hey a logical reply.
Thats basically exactly why. Once animation systems are good enough to support object mounting from any angle, I don't think you'll need jumping anymore.
Bulletstorm doesn't have jumping and I never really notice. It's mostly because lots of games were platformers and there are still a lot of platformer elements in games today.
I fucking hate how you have to press a button just sothe game plays a superslow animation and it only works on obstacles designed to do that.
Want to go over a railing? No. Want to go over a fallen tree 2 times as high? Why yes no problem!
Would you enjoying playing Mirrors Edge without jumping?
And jumping helps you get to higher points in a map. (Rooftops)
