• The Novint Falcon Megathread!

Yes, this is my first post (you can thank someone for posting a link). As a few have said there is an alpha of Novint's F-Gen drivers for 32 bit Windows machines that allow the Falcon to be used as a mouse. The beta (which will work on 64 bit) is set to be released before the end of the year. While I don't know the full scope that F-Gen will allow at the beginning I do know that we will be able to configure specific control settings and forces per application. The intent is to establish at least basic Falcon support for any program and allow the community at large to develop support. While this may sound like a lazy way out I personally would prefer it. I know I can get to and build configurations for games I like to play faster than Novint can get the rights to the source code. And with a scripting system (among other things) also in the works I can give different weapons different recoil if I so choose. The Falcon may not be for everyone, but it is for me.
I absolutely refuse to buy that thing. I have a mouse that serves the same purpose for half the price, or 1/4 the price if we're talking about the non-sale price.
My mouse is $99
My mouse is $99
Mine too, or at least it was when I got it. Need to go back and check todays market. I got a Logitech MX Revolution. I loved that mouse, still do I suppose. Between SetPoint and the scripting in TF2 I practically didn't need a keyboard. It's weird using it now though, it really does feel flat after using the Falcon.
I already own the Orange Box and Penumbra: Overture, and I have a really small desk. I wish I had known about this before I got the desk and the games. [editline]10:28PM[/editline]
My mouse is $99
Mine was free, it came with a dell my parents bought.

[editline]10:28PM[/editline] Mine was free, it came with a dell my parents bought.
Your desk is one thing I can't help much with. As to the games you could try emailing them and seeing if they'll shave a little more off the top by excluding the Orange Box. I have seen them do it before. The Penumbra they have there is a specific HaptX version though so if you want Falcon support on that game you need to get it through them.
Holy Shit I NEED this.
I was skeptical but after watching YouTube videos of it, I am very impressed. The recoil adds a whole new feeling to gaming, I will pick one up.
99 dollars? No thanks, I'm going to go pirate it instead
Too bad I NEED SOME GOD DAMN MONEY FIRST. [editline]08:47AM[/editline]
99 dollars? No thanks, I'm going to go pirate it instead
Right. Have fun.
99 dollars? No thanks, I'm going to go pirate it instead
You're going to pirate precision hardware? I don't think it works like that Kabolte.
Where does it say $99? It only says "White ($148.74*) Black ($157.24*)" for me [editline]09:05AM[/editline] Oh, boxes please. This starts friday.
Too bad it will probably control like an analog stick. I'm sticking with my mouse thank you very much.
Too bad it will cost 1 million dollars to ship to australia
99 dollars? No thanks, I'm going to go pirate it instead
You wouldn't download a car.
Oh, boxes please. This starts friday.
i rated u hart
Big deep breath Devin, you can do this Hey guys! I noticed someone posting a link to here over on the Novint forums, I am here to remedy some question or future questions, you may have. First of all, let me say, Novint is a GREAT company. The CEO of the company (Tom Anderson) actually thoroughly reads, and replies to EVERY SINGLE THREAD ON THE FORUMS. Our community is more laid back, rather than a up tight rule community. The Novint Falcon has improved my gaming experience, and skill level, 3 fold. From feeling my shotgun in TF2 to knowing where a enemy shot me from, the Falcon has it all.
Should I get this or a logitech mx air?
The Novint Falcon, a mouse cannot emulate what the Falcon can.
This, it's epic for hl2 / other good fps games which support it, l4d2 does too.
Sadly, there won't be L4D2 support as of yet, not because of Novint. They are trying to strike a deal with Valve.
What the hell is that? It looks like it'd take up half of my desk space.
It's a 3D haptics device offering feedback whenever something happens in game, such as shooting a gun, jumping, being shot, or running into a wall.
You fucking kidding me? I bet when the Producer of Novint Falcon joins the server for the first time, he's gonna shut it down after the first day.
Nope, we have actually have over 18 matches on that server I believe, excluding our Falcon contest.
I dont really understand how it works...It just looks awkward. I want to try it though.
Motors move updating the arms at 1000 times a second, yes, one thousand. This allows precise reproduction of recoils such as guns. You can aim by moving the pistol grip around, and turn by pushing against "Springy walls" by moving the pistol grip to it's limits, the further you push, the faster you spin.
Who'd have thought that would happen  These things seem so damn gimmicky, but still fairly cool as a concept. Shame they are always so expensive, $99 is still a lot of money to spend on a controller with limited realistic uses.
Actually, they are developing this thing for THOUSANDS of realistic things, such as medical training. This could help simulate giving a shot, taking blood, doing a brain precedure. But who am I to tell you what it can do realistically to help the world? Read more here http://home.novint.com/community/phorum/list.php?42
Totally agree. At least a mouse I can use in all my PC applications whereas I'm not sure if the falcon can even be used as a mouse.
With N VeNt it can be used as a mouse.
maybe i'll get it. maybe not, doesn't seem right playing games on my computer without my mouse.
I thought the same too, until I researched it more and learned more about what it can do. Try searching youtube or going on over to http://home.novint.com/community/phorum/
I've heard it's hella good. It would definately take some getting used to though.
It is a GREAT device, it took me around 10 hours to get used to all the forces, but after that I was a Falcon soaring high in the sky (Pun intended)
I'd buy it just to play the Airport level in MW2, then put it on youtube and watch people cry and scream I am a terrorist.
Sadly, it is not supported in MW2. Like I said, Novint is still breaking deals with the gaming companies to have this used in their game. With the release of F-Gen drivers, ANY game will have support with limited forces of course.
also F-Gen drivers are due out sometime soon which will allow you to use the falcon with all games also I'm not 100% sure but I think they said it may work with normal windows aswell, I'll check that though
F-Gen currently works with Windows XP. They are currently working on a fix for Windows Vista/7
Or you can use a mouse like a normal person. During that eGO contest the guy with the Falcon lost against almost everyone, even the shitty people.
I'm not sure I know about this? You shouldn't hold everyone with one to high expectations, he may have just got one.
That's because the lead guy got mad that they were losing so much free Falcons and probably threatened to fire them/replaced them. [editline]03:32PM[/editline] How is using a mouse not fun? This seems as smart as using a gamepad for a FPS on PC.
Nope, Tom, the CEO, is extremely nice. He never goes back on his word, and is very generous to the community and the consumers of the Novint Falcon. The people who competed in the contest (except for 1 and that was John, he works at Novint as the Leader Marketing Director) are players from the community themselves. This WILL improve your gameplay, easily.
If I didn't have orange box already I might have bought it. $99 is a lot for a controller and penumbra.
I believe there are packs with JUST the Falcon. If not, you can contact FalconSales@Novint.com and see if you cannot just buy the Falcon, with the Pistol Grip instead of the whole pack.
Still too much for me.
99$ is a completely awesome price, considering it normally goes with 200$ regular, shipping NOT included, but with a 20% off code (GiveMe20%Off) then you get it down to 175 I believe.
I will probably get one for Christmas, too bad it doesn't support much now... but I have faith that there will be more future support. Especially after this sale, I'm sure more people will have it.
F-Gen drivers will allow some type of support for ALL games once it is released, which should be pretty soon.
So far the only thing that intrigues me about this is the force feedback it gives using certain weapons. That is not enough to really buy it though.
What?? The *Only* thing? Recoil wise it gives you: Force Feedback using ALL weapons in any game that is fully supported. When you jump and land, you can feel it. When you get in a car, you feel the engine running. When you drive a car, you feel all the bumps, etc on the road. When you get shot from behind, or to the left, or right, you feel where your shots are coming from. When you run into a wall, you feel those forces too.
I absolutely refuse to buy that thing. I have a mouse that serves the same purpose for half the price, or 1/4 the price if we're talking about the non-sale price.
WRONG. Your mouse certainly doesn't offer a force feedback option, or anything close to what the Novint Falcon can replicate (See above reply)
99 dollars? No thanks, I'm going to go pirate it instead
99$ is the lowest they will get, with the regular being 200$, with a 20% off code (GiveMe20%Off) you will still get it for around 175$ best time is to buy now, than never, even if you don't like it, there's a return policy.
Too bad it will probably control like an analog stick. I'm sticking with my mouse thank you very much.
Completely wrong, force feedback, and it's like moving your hand through water, unlike a analog stick, this thing will replicate almost all things that can have feedback, or normally would affect you in real life. Wipes forehead Wow, that was easy. (Pushes easy button) If you have anymore questions, post here, or contact me @ dharok1337[at]gmail[dot]com Thanks, Devin
Big deep breath Devin, you can do this blah blah, lala...... all kind of great stuff up here Devin
so.. you are one of the developer's?? or just trying to sell the falcon also you got a useful from here:D

Truthfully I would have bought it without doubts when the sale started, but I already spent some money on a Keyboard/Mouse combo that went on sale recently. I needed a new mouse (current is dying) and since it was only 10 bucks higher to get the desktop pack, I went along with that one. I could possibly get my family to get me that for Xmas when the sale starts though.
Looks like an awesome device, it just needs a better grip.
so.. you are one of the developer's?? or just trying to sell the falcon also you got a useful from here:D
Nope, just one of the many community members trying to get it more well known.
Nope, just one of the many community members trying to get it more well known.
Hosting an EGO server is not the way to get known. Everybody except the EGO community itself hates ego.
Actually, they are developing this thing for THOUSANDS of realistic things, such as medical training. Read more here http://home.novint.com/community/phorum/list.php?42
Hah, didn't know they were working on making his have some more realistic uses, I can see what you mean by it being used to help train people to get the know how to take blood, perform surgery with the new medical bots, that kind of thing. I never thought of applying it to that kind of scenario.
you should wear this when playing with the falcon for an ultimate experience :D
That think shocks you...alot :v:
Looks like an awesome device, it just needs a better grip.
The pistol grip works perfectly. I use it and I have somewhat short fingers. Heck even my little brothers can use it. Some pics real quick. Everybody except the EGO community itself hates ego.
Seems to have worked so far. I honestly haven't had any trouble with eGO. Though I do hear a lot about the hate. I can't really comment too much on that part, they pretty much let us run our own server and leave us alone. I didn't take part in the agreement so I have no clue how it came to be. However, recently we got four more, non-eGO, servers for us to use (thanks to Devin for getting that arranged). So if that's really a problem we can accommodate in TF2. The community is working on getting a BF2 server as well.
I think after 2 hours your right arm will die of exhaustion.
I think after 2 hours your right arm will die of exhaustion.
That would be why chairs have arm rests. I don't think holding your arm up for a while would hurt though.
That would be why chairs have arm rests. I don't think holding your arm up for a while would hurt though.
Try it. It does. Just hold your arm up at a little less than 90 degrees and hold it there. It'll start to wanna go down after a little while.
Try it. It does. Just hold your arm up at a little less than 90 degrees and hold it there. It'll start to wanna go down after a little while.
You'd be holding on to a gun though. My old chair didn't have an arm rest and I had to hold my arm up to use a mouse. I am sure you'd get used to it.
lucky my chair has arm support :D But on a serious note, this device is amazing, I ordered mine last week and I'm just waiting for it to arrive
So, I don't know much about eGO, or clans of any sort really, but if eGO is a poor choice, who would be a good choice? The CEO of Novint is active on their forums, if someone recommends another group that would be interested he would very likely take it under consideration.
