Change the VRAM amount in the main.cfg, as well as the default resolution and set compatibility to XP.
Did that, same crash.
Made a video: [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUODf7Sx5Ag[/hd]
In the Main.cfg you can edit this line: r_text_MessageTime 2000 to r_text_MessageTime 0000 So when you hit ~ and turn off all your text, it won't show your velocity in the center of your screen, and when you make your text re-appear, it won't be there but it still shows what velocity you're set at on the bottom left, so it's kind of redundant anyway. Nice music choice too [editline]9th April 2011[/editline]
This should be a teaching resource in schools. If the average person had any kind of appreciation for how fucking massive the universe is and actually managed to keep it in mind instead of ignoring it from fear, our world would probably be at least a little bit better. It kind of frustrates me that we on a little mote in the most unimaginably large dust cloud possible but people simply aren't interested in/amazed by the scale. The lack of public interest in astronomy hurts my heart sometimes. Even the size of our own solar system would probably shock people. Try flying from the sun to pluto at the speed of light, or fly into a globular cluster and then try to wrap your head around the reality that each point of light is an entire STAR, and the distance between them is actually more enormous than our entire solar system. [editline]10th April 2011[/editline] I've shown this to a few people now and only a couple have seemed to understand any of this at all - that though it's procedurally generated, all this stuff might as well be out there, and other equally amazing shit really is. The rest are just like huh neat program, you're flying in circles around the milky way. [editline]10th April 2011[/editline] actually space feels really comforting. that reference frame helps me make sense of humans and life a little bit better.
Hey a lot of people think that beings from thousands of light years visit us all the time, and the majority of those people don't understand how far away even our closest star is. The one's who actually do understand the distances just say Oh, Technology. Same argument as saying I have Faith when you talk about religion basically. It's hard to imagine large numbers so I usually use something visual you can picture to explain distances that puts it into scale. Take the Voyager spacecraft. Launched it in 1977. Travels 3x faster than the Space Shuttle ever has. It's only traveled 1/5000th the distance our nearest star to earth is. Let's say you live to be 90 years old, your kids live to be 90 years old, they live to be 90 years old, and etc and etc, It would be 1,666 generations before that thing reached our nearest star. Then again the definition of a generation is 20 years, not 90, and using 20 years as a generation, it's only been 100 generations since the death of Jesus [editline]9th April 2011[/editline] Wow, I really rambled. Point is: Space is big
Oh my god this... this is the program I've wanted my entire life It is simply unbelievable
I found 2 colliding galaxies, Holy shit!
I found bros
Well then:
I've edited Solarsystem.sc and made so that mars and venus is terraformed! Now i wish i knew a way to convert some planet textures so they could work with this. Images time! Where is "solarsystem.sc"? I can't find it
I'm working on a HD texture pack for SpaceEngine, so far I've made a high res solar flare and corona, I attempted to make a HD galaxy but for some reason the transparent parts of the galaxy show up as a light grey color with some oppacity after I edit them :(
Where is "solarsystem.sc"? I can't find it
data\catalogs\planets
there was someone posting eariler he was able zoom out to see not just SuperCluster but also local Super Clusters and observable universe ... the problem is when i zoom out to certain range all goes into black (i tried change magnitudes settings for fade and other values related to increase visibility range but no help) here is whole Milenium presentation http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=13555 , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_simulation http://fsgregs.startlogic.com/Public_Files/Cham/Millennium.zip also there is http://gvince.perso.sfr.fr/celestia/Large_Scale_Universe.zip i will try import it as another catalogue i noticed some datasets in SpaceEngine are already based on Celestia (good sign of possibility or use/merge more data fast) \data\catalogs\galaxies\galaxies10k.sc http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13533&p=113875 http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13348 (notice celestia was able populate and render local cluster (~10k galaxies) in 2009 already and imaginary planet population was very similar to SpaceEngine but way richer in terms of variety of celestial bodies within each star system, due to Celestia way dense datas) wish i know the format of stardatabase and other differences to populate non procedural part universe (can be easily disabled for exploration freaks) precisely speaking of textures, after replacing Sol's texture with higher resolution one i noticed lot of stars used the same texture it's easy to edit basic textures of planets clouds layers seems to no support transparency system of Celestia not figured out how edit atmospheres (wonder if possible to apply to stars to create star turbulences etc. ) but when i tried improve some stuff like planetary rings it was fail w/o docs (e.g. new data about Saturn rings with way better image, even while edited the ranges it was wrong for some reasom)

How the heck do you do this? I want to make Earth a desert. EDIT: Nevermind, I got it. It's not making it look like a desert, though. Not really much I can do about that except maybe change the atmosphere.
Made another video, will upload soon :D
The Blue Marble. Well, it used to be blue.
Global warming much? :v:
Maybe if the color of the atmosphere was green, it would look better. I'm not sure how to do that, though.
Are frequent crashes normal?
Yep. Even my 580 chokes up when I go through dense star clusters.
I think it's more of a memory leak than anything since I can go into dense clusters just after I start up the program and it might lag up slightly but I get in there just fine, but if I'm running for 5 minutes or so and try to go into one, will most likely crash. Same thing for procedural planet generation. Here's my new video by the way: [hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUSnrZRTCVQ[/hd]

would it be possible to mod this to have giant blocky space invaders float around sometimes
I still can't get flying out really far and seeing hundreds of galaxies working. I see a few tiny dots still. How far out do you go?
-snip-
Two questions: How do you make your screenshots look so good? How do you increase the number of galaxies viewable? Currently I can only see the Milkyway and 2 Nebulae and that's it.
If you aren't seeing a fuckton (scientific term) of stuff there's probably a few things that are either turned off or have the wrong settings, possible solutions. 1. Play with the star magnitude settings (should be the 2 keys right after 0 on the numbers row of your keyboard) - I use 2m00 when inside dense clusters (or in the galaxy center) and 7m00 for anywhere else. 2. Press V to turn on auto Auto Exposure (if this is off, you can't see shit Sherlock) 3. You might have accidentally turned off some objects, play around with these: Ctrl + O : Toggle Orbits On/Off Ctrl + I : Toggle Clusters On/Off Ctrl + P : Toggle Planets On/Off Ctrl + U : Toggle Galaxies On/Off Ctrl + Y : Toggle Stars On/Off Shift + Y : Switch between Catalog, Procedural and Catalog & Procedural Star mode. Shift + I : Switch between Catalog, Procedural and Catalog & Procedural Cluster mode. Shigt + P : Switch between 5 (?) different Planet display modes (the one with longer description is the more detailed one)
Why are screenshots upside down?
I have no idea, but I just edit them quickly in paint and rotate 180º, flip horizontal and save. Meanwhile, I've made ourselves a Galaxy (the program automatically generated all the stars, clusters, solar systems, etc for it):
Anyone know how to force anti aliasing when HDR is on?
Has anyone got an easy way to find nebulae? Nevermind, turned on labels for them.
