Why does my game not look as good as this?

All of my planets render flat with horrible textures. What did I do wrong?

There's these 2 planets in a star near our sun called Bloop (and Bloopy, the moon), they're both Terra with life I think, probably some kind of testing system used by Space Engineer, and main planet has this huge cyclone cloud that looks amazing when seen from under it and from above:

Makes me depressed that the ME series started off so strong and then, along with bioware, declined after the 1st one.

This game has the potential to be the largest and best space game to date. I hope the dev knows what hes doing.

I have the graphics on the highest settings and it still looks nothing close to this. My planet textures look horrible and the environment is rather flat on all f them.

Turn on 3D water in the options and then land on the planet, then fly to the ocean's surface and check the height in the top left.

Temperate terra with life. Average surface temperature is 287 kelvin aka 14 C, which is exactly the same as Earth's. It's a close match, except for the atmosphere and size. Only 0.11atm, and it's 1.5x the size of Earth.

I sometimes do Space Engine timelapses, I've been trying to stitch them together with a Carl Sagan voiceover, but Windows Movie Maker sucks for that, an I can't be arsed to find any decent freeware programs.

I made one of those, but mine sucks. It's supposed to be random scenes of what you find in space engine, while trying to convey the scale. But like you I used MovieMaker so it ended up looking fucking retarded

I feel a considerable amount of unpleasantness when travelling through the galaxy at high speeds. I can't really explain why. I think it might be connected to feeling "lost" and meaningless somehow.

I almost shit myself when I accidentally zoomed out into total darkness when travelling at Gpc/s speeds (and couldn't get back to the visible universe afterwards). That one's pretty easy to explain though, it's just the fear that goes with sudden sensory deprivation. I have experienced the feeling you're talking about too.
