[QUOTE=nVidia;38408169]I had tons of artifacts when I first did that.[/QUOTE] It lags a bit at times but it didn't crash, my computer used to crash a lot on Space Engine until I edited the config file to use my exact VRAM ammount, turned off automatic VRAM detection and set it to use around 95% of it :v:

[URL="http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/21-881-14730-16-1352553052"]Oh my. Space Engine is looking more and more like those artist's renders of space you see often.[/URL] [quote=Space Engineer] This comet almost hit the planet: [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/5267976.jpg[/thumb] [/quote] [quote=Space Engineer] As you've probably noticed, SE doesn't take into account the color of the planet when it calculates the illumination of moons (and vice versa). Now I've fixed this. The method is very tricky. Analytic calculation of color of the planet is almost impossible - it should take into account the color table used for the surface texture generation, clouds and water coverage, and atmosphere color. So I made things easier - I just render a planet into a small texture (viewed from sun, so it's at full phase), then it read this texture back to CPU and sums up all pixels to calculate average color. This gives the true color of the planet taking into account all its features - real surface texture, clouds pattern, atmosphere and even rings! This procedure is fast enough, so it even can be used for real-time update of a planet's color. I've implemented several settings - compute color once, when planet first comes into view of field, update color every half second, and disable updating color. In the real-time updating mode, the effect fixes full eclipse issues - when the moon is in the shadow of the planet, it does not illuminate the planet. Another thing is the distance from which the color should be calculated. Now we should be able to approach the planet to see its disk. After that, if you leave the planet, its star-like particle will have a proper color. It is possible to calculate the color of every object from any distance, but this may hit performance, because there are hundreds of objects in a typical planetary system. It is also possible to calculate a color for every body when a planetary system is being generated, but this also will increase the generation time. Here are the screenshots showing the same scene, before and after a planet's color calculation (view it at full size). The first two are a view on a blue gas giant from its moon, and the next two are from far away, where it looks like a star (note the color of some small yellow moon near the gas giant): [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/9095972.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/3860833.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/5777826.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/3702366.jpg[/thumb] [/quote]
Some new stuff [url]http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/21-881-15277-16-1353277789[/url] [quote=SpaceEngineer]Did you thought I was doing nothing this weekend? You're wrong! Anyway, I have already about 220 Mb of soundtracks composed by various authors especially for SE! Few more new soundtracks incoming. Also, supporting of sound means that it will be possible to use nature sounds for planets and engine sounds for space ships. I'm looking for nice looping sound files that can be used here (free or made especially for SE). Edit: Just noticed - screens are shown a Betelgeuse system, and player is playing a track named "Betelgeuse" biggrin [/quote]

Has [del]Wallpaper creator[/del] Space Engine been updated to fix the crash when inside a planets atmosphere?
Okay, so I'm looking to buy a card with some money that I really shouldn't be spending on computers. What card do you guys recommend for great performance in this, that's under 150$? Based on your pc now. 500 watt psu(I think) 4 GB DDR2 ATI Radeon 2600xt Intel Quad Core ~3.5ish (not home) The guys in the hardware section don't like to respond

Look at the sticker on the side of it.
I'm getting a 560 watt psu and a 7770 for 149$ all together, should be able to run this nicely right?
[QUOTE=DesolateGrun;38563296]I'm getting a 560 watt psu and a 7770 for 149$ all together, should be able to run this nicely right?[/QUOTE] It will run fine, It might take a while to load up planets on a high LOD. My old Laptop could run this with a 5650.
Just got an SSD. [B]Everyone[/B], put Space Engine on an SSD right now. I don't care if you don't have one, find a way. Everything is silky smooth. Obligatory panorama and screenshots (all of them are from the same planet system, just different moons). [quote=SpaceEngineer]Updates: Automatic clearing of the cache when hardware is changed Saving compiled shaders binaries to the cache and fast loading Preloading all shaders at startup (option) Oblate planets and stars, automatic calculation of oblateness Gravity darkening of oblate stars The OpenGL 4.1 has a long-awaited function implemented - getting binary code of compiled shaders. Now it is possible to save binaries on the disk into a cache, then at the next time loading they are sent directly to the GPU, without a long compilation process. The speedup of loading time is 50-100 times! There are no lags caused by loading of new shaders when a new planet comes into view, or a solar eclipse crawling on the disk of a planet. Surprisingly, this function works not only in OpenGL 4.1, but in the older versions too. If it still not supported by user drivers, SE will use an old system (loading shaders sources and compiling). Also, I've add an option to the main config that allows loading all shaders at SE startup, so there will be completely no lags. When SE starts first time (or the hardware is changed and cache is cleared), SE performs loading, compiling and saving binaries of all shaders. It may take up to 5 minutes. But after that, at next launches it takes 10-20 seconds to load all shaders binaries. Oblate planets. I've fix some bugs with oblate planets (but not all), so I decided to do all calculation of oblateness to procedural planets based on rotation period. So get used to the new appearance of gas giants - now almost all of them will have an oblate shape (as our Jupiter and Saturn does, and to a lesser degree, Uranus and Neptune). [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/3171372.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/3358360.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/1906882.jpg[/thumb] Fast-rotating oblate stars like Vega or Spica have an effect called gravity darkening: polar regions are closer to the core and thus hotter (and brighter) than equatorial regions. So oblate stars will looks like this: From equator: [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/1527553.jpg[/thumb] From pole: [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/1950801.jpg[/thumb] From intermediate angle: [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/7811211.jpg[/thumb] Colder star: [thumb]http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/_fr/8/3554832.jpg[/thumb] [/quote]
just go my new 7770 and wow, I had no idea you were supposed to get that much detail WOWOWOWW

Probably will be released on Christmas as a surprise.
I'm only impressed more and more each day but the constant updates and added features. 0.97 will be something truly amazing.
More images, same system. I had forgotten to upload this image last time, nothing notable though: [thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32146097/scr00066.jpg[/thumb] I then noticed a rather peculiar planet in the system browser. It varies between 850 and 900 AU distance from the center of the system. Really damn far. [thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32146097/scr00067.jpg[/thumb][thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32146097/scr00068.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32146097/scr00069.jpg[/thumb] There wasn't much there, so I went to a neighbor of the original planet I had gone to. It has some truly amazing sights. simple question. Is there a simple way of "rendering" out a screenshot in a larger-than-your-monitor resolution?
[QUOTE=paul simon;38681736]simple question. Is there a simple way of "rendering" out a screenshot in a larger-than-your-monitor resolution?[/QUOTE] You can lower the FOV (something 45 degrees or less, in order to have as little distortion as possible) and take multiple screenshots and have the computer stitch them together with Hugin or Photoshop. Or you could use the "Export Skybox" feature.

[QUOTE=Sobek-;38688069]What are we actually looking at here?[/QUOTE] I'm guessing an eclipse.
[QUOTE=paul simon;38681736]simple question. Is there a simple way of "rendering" out a screenshot in a larger-than-your-monitor resolution?[/QUOTE] This was posted in General Ingame Media and it should achieve what you want. [QUOTE=TheHypnotoad;38690505]You can use downsampling to get the same effect though. [QUOTE=Avager;38688096]Eclipse... Probably caused by gas giant.[/QUOTE] It is an eclipse, but a gas giant's shadow would be much too soft to be like that. It's from a planet in a binary-planet system. The companion planet is very large and close-by so the shadows are quite hard. If you look closely at the area that the star's flare is, you can see the companion star being lit a bit by a red-dwarf.
So does this thing have an in-game encyclopedia that shows you what other people have named undiscovered planets and what not, yet?
[QUOTE=TheTalon;38696506]So does this thing have an in-game encyclopedia that shows you what other people have named undiscovered planets and what not, yet?[/QUOTE]No, but it will have an offline version of that in the next release. People could share/combine their encyclopedias at that point.
