Some images, i finally got around to download 0.96.4 or what ever patch was released in July. All my crashes stopped. That last shot is pretty nice, I like how natural the sand looks.
I found a neat planet, Tidal Locked Ringed Temperate Terra with Life [editline]1st January 2013[/editline] Oh wow I just found 2 more Tidal locked Terras
Yeah, they're fairly common; as are Binary systems.
Just downloaded this. It looks amazing. Any tips/guides for a newcomer?
F4 brings a list of objects and elements it can display (toggleable) Ctrl-F4 brings up the graphics menu F6 is the locations journal which you can view and add to F3 is the search tool Q and E rotate Shift-G lands on the surface of an object Ctrl-G takes you to the center of an object G takes you to an object T Locks a selected object to the center of your view J switches time between negative and positive, K and L change the speed of time Shift-LMB-Drag lets you change your FOV, middle click toggles between the changed FOV and the default. If you think the movement of the planets are too choppy, divide your screen's refresh rate by 1000 and go into config/main.cfg and change the following to the number you had gotten (0.06 for me):
// physics settings PhysicsTick 0.006 // physics iteration time (seconds)
Edit: F2 brings up the solar system brower, right clicking on an object in the browser shows any satellites/takes you deeper.
So I am sitting here, zooming around, when out of nowhere I find a large black hole in front of me. I had never seen one in this simulator before. So, naturally I go to fly close to it and land on it. At the same time, I am listening to very creepy music at the time, which fits the simulator quite well. As I approach, I notice the lensing of light is getting larger and larger. I was legitimately hesitant and afraid of pressing the "land on surface" button. Im not sure why.
Helpful guide to finding black holes for the unaware: Whenever you find a globular star cluster, select it and press g on it. Your camera will now be pointing directly at a black hole and all that is required is managing to scroll up to it without going past it. [editline]dsguihdsfg[/editline] Here's a really interesting find: [t]http://i.imgur.com/62w72.jpg[/t] A brown dwarf in a triple barycenter system, where two barycenters with two stars each are orbiting each other, and each sun has planets orbiting it with lots of moons orbiting them. But that's still not the best part. The BEST part is that out of the four stars, only one is main sequence. The rest are all brown dwarves. This brown dwarf is the one orbiting the main sequence star. And finally, the massive patch of stars is the center of the milky way. Ergo, skulk around that area and find mindboggling shit. [editline]ewtugy[/editline] [t]http://i.imgur.com/vAT4k.jpg[/t] Found this ringed terra orbiting the main sequence star. This system may just be the best ever. [editline]sdfhg[/editline] Holy shit the terra has six bloody moons! [editline]sdfjh[/editline] Oh my god one of the brown dwarves has a fourth fucking barycenter orbiting it. Two cold titans orbiting each other, orbiting the brown dwarf which is in tandem with another brown dwarf, orbiting in tandem with a whole other system. This may just be the best find I've ever found. [t]http://i.imgur.com/5613C.jpg[/t] Fucking purple titans orbiting each other. [t]http://i.imgur.com/srQHJ.jpg[/t] The two brown dwarves orbiting each other. In the distance is the main sequence star and somewhere behind it is its brown dwarf.
Hes updated texture exporting in the next version http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/21-881-17466-16-1357220654

I love this game. I've always loved the god damn artist's conception images of stuff like this on Wikipedia and always wanted a game like that.
What's the best way of finding brown dwarves?
What's the best way of finding brown dwarves?
Look in nebulas, I guess. There's less stars inside of them and chances are one of the dim systems contains a brown dwarf. While I was confirming this, I found this abomination of a brown dwarf. [t]http://i.imgur.com/4U2kJ.jpg[/t] It's actually completely black like the right-hand-side. It's glowing like this because of [t]http://i.imgur.com/j4Z3G.jpg[/t] its location. [editline]dsgf[/editline] And in a nearby system: [t]http://i.imgur.com/BnhUQ.jpg[/t] An oceania orbiting an oceania.
Black holes are trippy.
Release for the next version, is 'soon' http://en.spaceengine.org/forum/21-881-17888-16-1357816676

Is it just me, or do the Alps look... Less than stellar? [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/scr000024.png[/thumb]
Is it just me, or do the Alps look... Less than stellar? [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/scr000024.png[/thumb]
You need to download the high res textures for earth, http://en.spaceengine.org/load/additional/earth_hi_res/3-1-0-11
You need to download the high res textures for earth, http://en.spaceengine.org/load/additional/earth_hi_res/3-1-0-11
Oh, neat. Thanks!
Is it just me, or do the Alps look... Less than stellar? [thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/scr000024.png[/thumb]
The earth's default textures are utter shit. Everything else is the solar system has the same effect. It would be hard to create an accurate satellite-like imagery representation of the earth. And you can't exactly procedurally generate it because then people would complain that the engine doesn't represent x part well enough. Same with all the other places in the solar system, map's aren't detailed enough and are too hard to map out as anything other than a single texture. Stitching together millions of smaller images or satellite imagery wouldn't be easy, and that's what google earth is for.
How come VY Canis Majoras (Biggest star) looks like a fucking cripple.
This is not an Explore the Earth game. It's a god damn Explore the entire god damn universe game.
How come VY Canis Majoras (Biggest star) looks like a fucking cripple.
Because that's what super big stars look like irl.
How come VY Canis Majoras (Biggest star) looks like a fucking cripple.
Because size is a relative phenomenon, if you're sitting in mostly empty space looking at a gargantuan star it doesn't matter how big it is, because there's nothing nearby to compare it to
Does this work with windows 8? I just got the game but it crashes as soon as the galaxy is done generating. I have the latest display drivers, but for whatever reason once generation is finished, the display adapter stops responding. Help?

Help?
There are a couple posts about this sort of thing in the Technical section of their forums. There's a couple factors you can change in the .cfg files to try and bypass the crashes. It's still a WIP remember. Those screenshots made me think. 1mmx1mm resolution? WHAT
Those screenshots made me think. 1mmx1mm resolution? WHAT
It's not like it would generate the entire world at that detail level. It would look pretty good even if it were just like a 4m radius around the camera like in Outerra. Quite an experience to go down to a surface and look at a tiny pebble.
[t]http://i4.minus.com/iWFbPB6GgMxB3.png[/t] [editline]14th January 2013[/editline] Can't see it in the shot, but Pluto is off to the left, the Mass Relay is next to Cheron, I had real brightness on, but it made the image too dark
Real brightness isn't right yet. Even Space Engineer says it's unrealistic.
