The CryEngines for graphics and mapping. UE3 is great for modding and graphics, and is more scalable than CryEngine 2 (probably 3 as well) but it just lacks the "wow" factor in its graphics.
Graphically: Both cryengines. Cryengine 1 in 2004 looked incredible Cryengine 2 in 2007 looked incredible. Cryengine 3 in 2010 will look incredible. Moddability: Source easily. Easy to use level editor, SDK included makes modding for source rather easy. It is pretty outdated graphically though.
You can easily mod Cryengine, the thing is it's just not as popular to mod as Source since source is based off one of the most popular games of all time
the engine trespasser ran on it was really bggy, but it was going to have dinosaur behaviors, realistic physics, it had dynamic sound mixing, dynamic animations, and was going to have complex puzzles. due to it being 98, it was nearly unrunnable, and was rushed and went overbudget
A box that is modeled to scale doesn't mean shit. A flat texture that represents most of the city doesn't mean much either. And cryengine3 won't have brushes. There is no modern engine that uses brushes anymore. Sure UE3 can do it, but it's not recommended and isn't done in commercial games. [editline]14th November 2010[/editline] Hard to fake with pre-rendered? Are you joking? Just lower sample/shadow/whatever quality in your renderer settings, and there you go, artifacts like in realtime media. Most nonrealtime renderers are just more advanced realtime renderers.
You realize a brush is simply a term for an art object that is static/non manipulative right? Cryengine uses brushes. Source uses brushes too, but in a different way where you can make your own objects out of them. Cryengine also has this, but they are called "whiteboxes" and basically are only used as placeholder artwork by the designer until an art asset is made from a modeler. Though you can use whiteboxes LIKE source brushes, it just takes a lot longer than what source can do. Here's the whitehouse for example, made entirely out of whitebox brushes in Cryengine 2:
The only improvement I've noticed that the Source Engine has made these past six years since Half-Life 2, is prettier lighting, cooler particle effects, and cinematic explosions. I hope Portal 2 will really impress us when we get our hands on it. If not, well Valve will really need to step their game up for Episode Three.
Yeah it is
No it isn't. It doesn't refer to the amount of detail you have, it means those details are the correct size, or some consistent fraction of it.
No it isn't. It doesn't refer to the amount of detail you have, it means those details are the correct size, or some consistent fraction of it.
Size devoid of detail doesn't mean shit, look at games like grand theft auto 4 where a city isn't to scale but is still incredibly detailed; I'd prefer that over your example any day.
Please grow a brain and stay on topic instead of randomly attacking anything I say. GTA you see up close and in ODST when you are actually in the city it's very detailed. But you don't get something like that screenshot from GTA.
the CrazyBus engine. In gaming's many decades, a better engine has not yet been seen. Ultra-realistic graphics, physics so stunning they'll make you die horribly and great bug-free code. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_VJZAqViT4
For an FPS, Sauerbraten Engine, but I haven't really been able to crack the code open to actually make a game with it. It has an awesome map editor and is cross platform. For an MMO, I'd have to say the Runescape engine. The game may be crappy, but the engine is pretty tough, handling ~2000 people per server without much lag. The graphics are awesome for a Java game and Jagex have really stretched it to almost be on par with a non-Java game engine. For a 2D game engine, I'd have to say Knytt. It's really smooth.
Unreal line of engines have proven to be the most versatile ones. Although I only have little experience in developement using them (only 2 projects) but I'm gonna pick that. Unity certainly isn't the best engine out there but it's coming and coming fast. Plus it's easy to develop in.
id Engines PERIOD. All known games that I know of, that uses id Engines to start their games, if you search carefully you'll see that their games contain id Technology (Obviously for the ones that id made, DUH!) - Wolfenstein 3D - Doom 1 & 2 - Quake - Quake 3 - Wolfenstein: Return to Castle - Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Call of Duty - Doom 3 - Call of Duty 2 - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - RAGE
Unreal Engine, considering they made Postal 2 on it.
Source engine :colbert: The thread is called "The Best Game Engine you've ever seen" and source engine is the best game engine i have ever seen.
I don't know a lot about game engines or how they work, but I love GTA4's engine.
I like the minecraft engine, not for its amazing water physics and gravity but for its sand box like abilites. How many games allow you to make a computer inside of them?
I like the minecraft engine, not for its amazing water physics and gravity but for its sand box like abilites. How many games allow you to make a computer inside of them?
Garrys mod?
Cryengine 2. WAAAAAAY better than 3.

Garry's Mod, with a much faster rate as well. Also water physics in Minecraft is horrible, pretty sure we'd get volcanoes if water physics worked the way it really should.
Anyway, doesn't Minecraft use LWJGL to render everything? [editline]15th November 2010[/editline]
Niko?
Cousin! Let's go bowling.
Useful/Moddability: Source Good Looks: Gran Turismo 5 engine Destruction: Geo-Mod 2.0 (Red Faction: Guerrilla) I'll throw in Cryengine and Unreal Engine 3.
Anyway, doesn't Minecraft use LWJGL to render everything? [editline]15th November 2010[/editline] The amazing water physics bit was ironic, and I didn't say that Minecraft was the only one that could do it I just thought that it was the most impressive looking Cousin! Let's go bowling.
The engine used in then game Duke Nukem 3D. For new games i wouldn have to say the engine used in the brothers in arms series
Lwjgl

I like RAGE. How did I forget the lighting for Mirrors Edge: Then again... That's Cryengine 3, by the way.
That Engine Garry is working on. Custom title pls.
