Neither were chicken before they were domesticated to be a human consumption item.
I do not get how much compassion people have for animals in general.
And having eaten both dog and cat down in mexico I can tell you they taste just as good as other darker meats.
I personally have a dog as a pet as well as a cat but I do not consider them "family members" they are just pets.
My old friend from Uni had a theory about people projecting their needs for social acceptance onto animals so people who are not largely popular with their peers tend to latch onto animals more so then socially active and accepted people.
So people who have pets are ugly and socially inept?

I assure you a wild fowl weighs more than a parrot.
I assure you a wild fowl weighs more than a parrot.
Have you ever seen the size of a chicken in person before? They're fat. but definitely not much longer than most species of parrot.
Have you ever seen the size of a chicken in person before? They're fat. but definitely not much longer than most species of parrot.
That's because humans have been feeding them growth enhancing chemicals for ages.
I have nothing against other cultures who eat cats and dogs for food. They've been doing so just as long as we've been eating cow and pigs.
It just depends on where you are. In fact, I'm not even sure if it's illegal to cook up a cat here in the US. The only reason people wouldn't ever attempt it is because it's taboo as hell and you'd probably get all kinds of shit just because our culture reveres cats as pets and best friends.
It's the same if you were to go to India or something and attempt to cook up a cow. You'd come under a hell of a lot of fire (although over there, it could be illegal, I don't know) even though you were raised to think "cows are for eating".
Only thing I can't really stand is how poorly the animals are treated, but honestly, there's not much we can do about that without associating ourselves with the horrible groups like PETA. I'm not ignorant to the fact that the animals we eat are treated so horribly, but I try not to think about it.

What the hell kind of parrot are you talking about here?

That's pretty idiotic of your friend.

This
Killing for food and killing for fun are two completely different things.
And this.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
China is actually putting tons of restrictions on dog/cat meat to the point where they're just down-right closing down the restaurants that serve them.
The part there they have yet to deal with is their animal fur industry which is still copied by western fur companies.
They skin the animals alive and beat them into submission so they wont put back any sort of resistance, most of the time the animal is still alive after the skinning.. (kicking, smashing it against the ground by its tail, stomping on it, breaking its bones with industrial equipment, etc.)
If the animal is going to die anyway, I don't see why it matters if it was painful or painless.
Regardless, I only see logic in killing for food. Killing for fun just seems like a waste of good food.
1. I've seen this thread, so many times.
2. Killing for food is one thing, as we're omnivores. Killing something for fun, or torturing it and abusing it before killing it, is another.
Killing for food and killing for fun are two completely different things.
Animal cruelty doesn't just apply to those who enjoy torturing animals, it also applies to those who are careless. Example: a person who throws the runts of the litter into a garbage can where they starve to death. It's cruel, but they don't take pleasure in it, they're just indifferent.
And eating animals as food isn't necessary, by any means. You really are taking an unnecessary pleasure at the expense of the animal.
Here in Norway, theres this huge ruckus about fur-farmers and their mistreatment of animals. I'm getting pretty sick of people inviting me to rallys and signing petitions to stop it. I'm not against closing down the fur-farms since they never will treat the animals good enough, and why can't people just buy fake fur?
My problem is those hordes of animal-lovers that would rather kill a human than a rat. Those are the people I strongly dislike. No compassion for all the poor kids dying of hunger and diseases in Africa, but one cat is thrown in a bin. "OOOH NOO KILL THE OWNEER!" Same goes with PETA, a bunch of hypocritical human-haters. They also want to stop hunting, which is what humans have been doing for decades.
Because it's not about the value of the animals life, it's about someone taking pleasure from the animal's suffering.
Wat? It's okay for animals to die painful deaths, but not for someone to enjoy it.
An animal is still dying no matter what the person's intent is.
cats are funny and dogs are dumb
quickly killing a pig to use for food =/= torturing and killing a cat for no reason other than pleasure.
Pretty sure it's almost the same, honestly, since you're killing the pig for food for pleasure.
I got into that issue in this thread. http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1024910-Astrology-signs It's amazing how hostile people can be when defending their love for KFC and the like. But it's selective, it's true. Why do some people choose to eat this animal but pet this animal? What makes that okay, if it has floppy ears, if it has a wagging tail, if it tastes good? It is barbaric, just as barbaric and eating a dog. Seriously, I wonder what the meat-eater's criteria is when they choose which animals are appropriate to eat or not.
You're the worst type of vegetarian. "omg i wish i wasn't a vegetarian now cuz grilld chicken!! but im gonna call you all out for eating meat, but i want 2."
And, really? It is not hard to find VEGAN things in any restoration, but VEGETARIAN things are EVERYWHERE. Go get some cheese poppers, or cheese pizza, eff yeah.
Most of the time you can get fries, beans (be careful, might be cooked with lard), rice + some vegan thing (peanut sauce). Or just go to subway and get the veggie delight and ask for TONS of sweet onion sauce.
PLANTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO!! :saddowns:
Plants, like you, have no brains (or nervous system) to 'feel' pain or emotion in the same way we do.
That whole argument becomes stupid the moment you realize that the animals you eat eat plants as well; Even if plants felt emotions, it would still be better to eat them due to the fact that the edible animals eat them as well, which would cause twice the suffering.

The reason why eating dogs is taboo is because since the beginning of civilization, they have been Man's Best Friend, helping us hunt, keeping us safe, and making for a lovable and intelligent companion. Cats are similar, though to a lesser degree. They have uses such as hunting mice, but less so than a dog.
Pigs and Cows that we eat were bred to be consumed.
